Apple just posted an HD version of the keynote and you can see it a lot better. Something is for sure in there. I don't know if it is a camera but I sure hope so.

Here is a screen shot I took from the HD stream (I don't know if it makes a difference)

This is the same phone they demoed all the apps on. Anytime you get a side view of it look at the form factor, it's the old case shape. I doubt they had a 3G iPhone on the stage before Steve Jobs announced it...

They never put cases on the iphone that is up on the stage though.. I assumed that it was used to cover the new phone so people would think it's an old one. Why would they present on an old iphone when they have the new one at their fingertips?

then why did they have a protective case on it. i think it was so they could hide the black back before they announced it.

it's about 3 minutes in, after he just announces the 16gig white version, it's pretty random. It's just a guy in the crowd standing up holding a white one with the camera looking at him.

i'm watching the HD version and i can't see it. could someone post a screenshot. or a timecode.

Admittedly, I thought the case was strange as well. But the 2.0 firmware will run on the original iPhone, as will everything which was demoed. So the same applies, Why would they present on a new iPhone when the old one works exactly the same.

More importantly, several publications got hands-on time with the new iPhone and noticed nothing new indicating front facing cameras. So if Apple would actually take the time to produce non-front facing cameras on the floor models, wouldn't they use the same thing on the demo unit so that a developer didn't notice the camera either...

oh and just a note:

they cut out the "it's a small world after all" song from the keynote streams. you hear the first 3 second and it fades out.

somebody got sued.

I havent heard of anyone having a first hand experience with the new iPhone. care to expand on "people".

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but Ryan Block (from Engadget) actually played with the new iPhone 3G behind closed doors by an Apple executive. And there are no "hidden" sensors or what not, just go here.

From the video link it is beyond reasonable doubt that it is indeed something in the top left hand corner of the phone. It's not obvious the entire time that the device is shown, but at certain instances you can see a distinct object behind the blackened portion of the glass front.

It looks similar to if you were out in direct sunlight with the current iPhone and you can see the sensors through the tinted glass.

I don't know if I would use it that often, but I think it would be pretty cool.

Whilst we're discussing a possible surprise announcement from Captain Stevo before the July 11 launch, does the hardware in the phone support AT&T's Mobile TV? I have no reason to believe this would happen, but if the iPhone 3G has the guts to support this, why the hell not have it!

Back to the front camera from the video. If we didn't have the video from the WWDC that has been posted, I would say, muh.... not even a chance. But combine the video with the FCC document indicating that they withhold the pictures, text, manuals, etc. that would disclose such information along with the commercials in Hawaii, New York and LA or wherever in CA it was at. A coincidence? I think not.

Not trying to create false hope and expectations, I just think it would be awesome if they injected even more frenzy about the new iPhone 3G just prior to July 11 with an announcement of video conferencing functionality. Mobile TV is probably just a pipe dream, but if the hardware allows it why not.

BRING IT!!! :D

then why did they have a protective case on it. i think it was so they could hide the black back before they announced it.

The case is there because it was the demo phone. Several different people got up on stage to use it. The case is there to add extra grip on a slippery phone with an awkward bulky video cable hanging out of it. Just what they want is someone to drop the phone on stage while they are swinging it around demoing accelerometer based games.

Because so may people were handling this, it explains the mysterious screenshot as smudges/reflections of stage lights on the screen. You people seeing more than that are setting yourselves up for disappointment.

Why would they present on an old iphone when they have the new one at their fingertips?

There is no reason for them to use the new phone as the demo phone. They were showcasing the software which runs identical on all iPhones.

I'd love for you all to be right as it'd be an added bonus. But from the way the people held the phone to demo some apps, I'm going with a finger smudge.

Based on all the hands-on reports and the difficulty of seeing anything behind the glass of my iPhone compared to the way finger smudges appear exactly as they do on the video - I'm going to say, not this time around.

my bad, it was a 1g iphone, the silver looked white on the low def version of the keynote.

heres the pic anyways.

Nda????

Think maybe anyone who played with the unreleased non production iphone 3G after the announcement had to sign an NDA for specs not officially announced by Apple?

That or like it would be outlandish to demo a model that doesn't have the front camera. I'm not saying I'm just saying.

Watch the video again. That ain't no fingerprint smudge thingy! That is a freak'n camera people! :)

If you watch some of the shots from the beginning of the keynote that show the iPhone theres nothing there it comes later on. I'm not sure if its because its a different angle or different light on it but try to find it towards the beginning of the keynote.

1. The 3g was used in the demos. It had the wider black border on the sides.

2. The spot I'm interested in isn't the big one on the left, it's the smaller one on the right. It makes sense it would be opposite the regular cam on the other side. Dual purpose/toggle back to front?

3. Responding to a post above, yes, Giz & Engadget had a bit of hands on with it. Them not seeing it doesn't phase me in the least. It's hard to see those sensors/holes in the phone unless under very direct sunlight or with a flashlight.

4. All the chatter on it. Some with certainty. That came from somewhere. i.e. Kevin Rose was right on the $199, is he right on the front cam also?

5. Why wait a full month? Why not this Friday? Is it 'really' mere stocking issues?

6. Commercials. I admit I've not keep up with that. What's the deal with them and what's the connection? Demonstrating video chat in different parts of the country?

7. What about the cases with the bigger open areas at the top? Look at this line of 3g cases from Belkin http://www.belkin.com/pressroom/releases/uploads/06_10_08iPhone3GCases.html

Minimally, Apple moved the sensors. Clearly. Looking at mine with a flashlight, they are above the speaker right next to the bezel. Now they are moved.

Oh, and I'll add #8 to my list.... the patents/fcc thing/reports.

I continue to hold out hope on this. Big time. (and it's not even something I'll likely use much at all 'cept for vid chatting with my husband from time to time). But I do think it's highly possible. ?

I didn't read every post, but I get the gist of the thread...

There are two main things giving me hope for more additions:

1. Launch delayed 1 month. This gives them time to pull a "YouTube App Surprise" on us.

2. No "one more thing!"

Where is my "one more thing?!"

If it comes exactly as shown, I will be plenty happy. If there are yet to be announced surprises, I will be even happier. It's a win-win for me. :D

1. The 3g was used in the demos. It had the wider black border on the sides.

Looking at the video again, perhaps i'll give you that one.

2. The spot I'm interested in isn't the big one on the left, it's the smaller one on the right. It makes sense it would be opposite the regular cam on the other side. Dual purpose/toggle back to front?

Makes sense, but it still looks like a smudge, especially since it is rather well lit in the given screenshot. There were many other times the front of the demo phone does not have anything visible.

3. Responding to a post above, yes, Giz & Engadget had a bit of hands on with it. Them not seeing it doesn't phase me in the least. It's hard to see those sensors/holes in the phone unless under very direct sunlight or with a flashlight.

Probably, but given the hype I am sure they would have explicitly attempted to locate it.

4. All the chatter on it. Some with certainty. That came from somewhere. i.e. Kevin Rose was right on the $199, is he right on the front cam also?

It came from the rumor mongers on the Internet. It was all completely fabricated by the rumors community. Someone said, "Wouldn't it be cool if..." and over time many people took it as fact. Kevin Rose also predicted with inside information that the first iPhone would have a slide out keyboard and two batteries.

5. Why wait a full month? Why not this Friday? Is it 'really' mere stocking issues?

There could be many reasons. It is not unlike Apple to announce and ship at different times. The keynote date was set way in advance, production lines may not necessarily be able meet the same schedule.

6. Commercials. I admit I've not keep up with that. What's the deal with them and what's the connection? Demonstrating video chat in different parts of the country?

I haven't kept up with them either, but merely the fact that they are making commercials does not point to any specific feature.

7. What about the cases with the bigger open areas at the top? Look at this line of 3g cases from Belkin http://www.belkin.com/pressroom/releases/uploads/06_10_08iPhone3GCases.html

It looks like the sensors were moved. I don't really know why, perhaps to improve the reliability of the proximity sensor, which if I am not mistaken is the longer sensor under the 1st gen iPhone glass, and could have been broken up into two smaller ones. The cases were made equally wide on each side of the earpiece for symmetrical reasons.

I swear, once people start getting these home and they find out there is nothing hidden under the glass people will widely speculate that it is hidden within the LCD like the Apple patent, just waiting to be activated.

Take a look at the MLB demo in the hidef video and you can see that the 'camera' you are looking at is clearly a finger smudge, it even has a trail leading up to it.

well, i took a screenshot of the first iPhone demo when scott forestall was demoing creating apps. the iphone in the background must have been fairly clean since it hadn't been touched yet. if you look closely at the iPhone in the background, u can see what looks like two circles. possibly a sensor or a camera. it's kind of hard to see. Pic #1 - Original, Pic #2 - Brightened.

See it for yourself. HD Timecode - 18:22
