"Geniuses" don't know what they're talking about with unannounced products any more than the average consumer. Store managers didn't even know a thing about the new iPhone until today. Retail employees get NO inside info. He's probably just some guy who reads these rumor sites too. A lot of people on here were convinced there'd be a video-conferencing camera, he could have been one of them.

Hey JB, one more post and you qualify for an avatar! Congrats. Make it a great post! :p

They shut down the 5th Avenue Store to film a commercial and onlookers claimed to have seen two men in suits and dark glasses with earpieces in..."secret service" types, if you will.

Matches the description of the ad we saw today pretty well I think.

but why would apple shut down a entire apple store to shoot an ad that doesn't even take place at an apple store. apple could have easily recreated that set on a soundstage or find another location.

I think we are going to see a whole slew of ads that resemble the one we saw today (black suits and all) it seems that one was shot on a sound stage. The NY shoot will have shots of the outside of the store. So I don't think we have seen that ad yet. I can't wait!!!

Maybe it was the guy from the cancel or allow vista adds.

Those commercials they shot in HI, LA, and NYC have to be to illustrate the capability of video calling around the nation. i see apple breaking the news of video capability in early july. I'm probably wrong, but this is a forum. goodnite

hey, does anyone know if the commercials shot in LA and HI were shot in the morning and afternoon instead of at night. if it's to demo video calling, there has to be a time difference. HI-morning LA-afternoon NY-night.

you never know.

Have these shoots even been confirmed? As far as I knew, there were just rumors of a casting call...

New York is confirmed for sure. I have a friend who works at Apple who told me he had to leave for the commercial shoot. That one had lots of pictures and documentation though. As for LA, I thought that was confirmed with people who said an Apple Store set had been built on a sound stage. Not sure about Hawaii. The other casting call was for some sort of music composing device. Perhaps "Band" written by that British guy for iPhone.

As for not disclosing the camera? That would be pure genius and IS something Apple would do. They are all about creating the hype. It will get the iPhone extra news and blog coverage before launch, and perhaps convince people who are on the fence. In addition to YouTube and glass added to the first gen, they also announced it would be using a better battery. Granted, it will be a shorter time period between announcement and launch than last time, but I wouldn't be surprised if the back plastic is upgraded, especially since Al Gore was in the crowd. Upgraded to what you might say? Not sure...what is cheaper (or as cheap as) plastic, allows radio waves to easily pass through, and is more eco-friendly (and sturdier) than plastic?

Also, wouldn't hiding a front facing camera like that produce a rather dim image and also use a ton of battery life to leave the screen and video going? Wouldn't said camera also need a hidden green light beside it too? Maybe?

I just typed all this on my iPhone. I stll get amazed by that sometimes. Touchscreen FTW!

^^^Congrats!
If the LA shoot was a sound stage then that is without a doubt the commercial that was shown today. Today's commercial wasn't shot in a reall apple store

why would they shoot in a apple store. this ad shows nothing of an apple store. its some secret underground bunker type set. unless the 5th ave store has a secret underground bunker. :D

Let me just say, things are pretty complex behind the big closed doors at the 5th Ave Apple store... from the peeks I've gotten ;). Anyway, the front facing video camera seems like a bad idea to me, it would get all smudged and whatnot and really, it's a bit over the top for Apple. Heck, not many people that will buy the iPhone will care if it has a front facing camera or not... it's just one of those complex novelties that Apple isn't so fond of.

Does this show a new camera or is just a light? Look at the top left of the phone.

Here is a video clip:

I don't know if you can see it well in the video so here are some screen shots.

At the very end of the commercial they pop up into a "store" it is just shot completely focused on the iphone so the store is out of focus. Btw I just have to say that I love the new angle the commercials are going. They are interesting, complex, very professional, funny, and just completely different from the last round of commercials.

What would you say about the isight built in camera then? It is a bit of a novelty that wasn't in many other computers before apple took the leap and built it into their computers. Apple really likes the random, well selected, novelty that has potential to catch on.. a video conferencing mobile camera has just that potential. But i agree if it is built in it will be incredibly subtly.. most likely hidden behind the glass.. or (eventually) as a patent showed a while ago using the pixels in the screen and turning that into a camera.

(edit)
That's an interesting picture... That seems like it is def. something in that corner... but seems like the wrong place according to rumors... also i loved that they had that iphone in a case haha... as soon as i saw it it was like oh come on just show it already! Don't Hide it!

There's definitely something there in the video, you can see it at a few points. I suppose it could be a marking in the protective case though. Interestingly, on my current phone you can't even see the proximity sensor, which would suggest that (assuming what we're seeing isn't the protective case) the glass/backing at the top of the new phone is different.

Just to add my views. I have had my nokia N73 for the entirity of my 18 month contract and although it has a front facing camera I have used it maybe twice and find it to be totally useless! Firstly its awful quality and in nothing lower than full on daylight its impossible to see anything. The video call was also very jumpy and was not enjoyable! I also felt like a complete **** talking and looking into my phone! (im sure you understand what I mean!)

So to conclude, unless youve tried it its really not that special. It would probably have added thickness and less battery life. and although it seems like alot of people on these forums want it the majority of other people just want the iphone for its ipod capabilities.

I doubt it will come to be honest!

I don't think it will happen either, but I was the first to come up with the idea (as far as I know) earlier this afternoon, and I'd love to turn out to be right. :)

We know that this would be great, but honestly could you not try to let the world know that you tried and failed to let people know about this in two different posts.

just one last thing to add to this speculation, but did anyone else feel like the iphone part of the keynote was a bit rushed? I mean apple has to know how much hype surrounded this phone since even before the last one was released.. and it kind of took a back seat to everything today. Maybe this calls for a more grander something or other later on? just more speculation

Are you kidding? The whole thing was about iPhone! Unless you mean the actual, physical iPhone 3G, but bear in mind this is a developers conference, and plenty of people are unhappy that the iPhone took such centre stage over every other Mac platform.

I'm calling a no on the front-facing camera, and I think it's amazing that even when a product has been announced and released, this forum is still speculating over it's features! Crazy!

I can already record video and upload directly to youtube via 3rd party apps. My battery works just fine. I am happy with the Edge, and I'm in NYC so it's not difficult to find a wifi spot or triangulate my position... I really see no need to upgrade.

Unless of course, you included a front facing camera :D

I'm still holding out hope. There was SO much chatter on this with many places pegging it as a given. What's the reason for a month wait before launch? And, I'm not seeing anyone getting any real hands on time with the phone other than a "can I see it?" quickie.

And yes, the above cap from the vid is haunting me.

Apple just posted an HD version of the keynote and you can see it a lot better. Something is for sure in there. I don't know if it is a camera but I sure hope so.

Here is a screen shot I took from the HD stream (I don't know if it makes a difference)

oh, I see. i see the genius bar logos and some aurora backgrounds on iMacs. maybe they shot two ads at the same time. the original ad, and the video conferencing ad.
