I guess this is going to be my first Mac.

I have been waiting a while for the right Mac to show up. Every time when I needed a new machine, the MacPro's where too old and in need of an update.

I have been looking for a HTPC for a while and now that XMBC supports hardware acceleration under Linux (maybe under OS X soon too!), the Mac Mini will be the platform I am going to experiment with...

I agree that the mini is expensive, specially since I want a few upgrades. €800,- for a HTPC is very expensive.

I have different issues with Apple :D First I would like to have the option to order the Mac Mini with a SSD! Second, I would like to have the wireless keyboard with the US layout (elongated enter key), but I am unable to order those since I am in Europe... Usually UK International layouts have an elongated enter key but somehow Apple's does not. :(

Update: order has been placed :)

No Remote, and VGA users now need to purchase an adapter too.
:rolleyes:yeah... and there is no betamax video port .

you want an remote , buy one!... they are only £10 on ebay.
Most people buying the Mini don't use or need the remote imo

VGA adapters cost close to nothing.

So the 20$ remote is bugging you that much that you'd rather be stuck with a slower processor, slower RAM, a crappy GPU, smaller HD ?

I think that 20$ "price increase" was worth it...

mac mini

i think the price should be $499 and should include the apple keyboard and mouse. but who knows if that will ever happen

exactly, the keyboard/mouse combo is $100, that's ridiculous apple doesn't include on the mini, imo. even at $599 i can live with that if it already had the kb/mouse.

599 is too high.
499 would be nice.

Youngsters today. Why I had to walk through the snow to get my first computers!

This notion that the mini is overpriced at $599 just shows how far we've come in such a short time. When I bought my IIci in 1991 (c'mon, not all that long ago) it was a great little machine with 25 MHz 68030, 8MB RAM, and 80 MB HD Yes, those are all M's. Price tag: over $8,000. (I was lucky to get it at a half-price discount.) We ran System 6 and liked it!

Since the original G4, Mac Mini has been DVI and VGA friendly right out of the box. Now it isn't. No big deal for me, but it may be an inconvenience and an added expense for someone else, simple as.

Prices have shot up more than 25% over the former model in certain territories. So yeah, having to potentially purchase an adapter and a remote on top of the asking price might make or break some purchases.

I'm getting one btw. Been waiting for a consumer mac with dual display support forever.

I'm going to be connecting my mini to a VGA display at first, until I eventually hook it up to a larger LCD via DVI. But I'd actually be quite surprised if a modern computer came with VGA support out of the box.

So wait, you're saying Apple should've absorbed the cost of the weakening currencies around the world, and maybe in some cases, even lose money to sell the product in a particular region ?

The only price increase is the remote and adapter that aren't included anymore. The price of the mini stayed the same everywhere, it's just that the currencies are worth less today vs the US dollar.

Can't really believe that folks are moaning about the price, just buy one or don't.

The Mac Mini is superb value( now it's been updated) especially considering what can be done with it using OS X.

I'm getting the 'low end ' one and then out comes the ol putty knife for a little home upgrade,..... great value , but as always (it seems) with Apple , one has to do a bit to get them up to scratch, but that's cool with me.

ViVa La Mini !!!!
:D

Can´t decide what mini

I hate that the high end mini is still only 2.0 ghz, if only it came with the 2.26 processor standard, that would seem trully a step forward compared to the low end mini.
I can´t decide between the minis since hd or ram can always be upgraded so the higher mini doesn´t seem that appealing to me. It's price is just too close to the lower end iMac, wich seems a better investment for the money.

Newbie question; is the 128 mb graphic card on the lower model a real difference to consider compared to the 256 mb card? Why should I consider the 256 mb card? Previous Mini had only 64 mb card so new 128 mb already doubles it.
If you were to choose between 2.26 ghz/128 mb grapchic card mini (upgraded lower mini) or a 2.0 ghz/256mb graphic card what would you choose?

They're not 128MB or 256MB cards, they're the very same 9400m onboard chip that either reserves 128 MB of your main memory if you have 1GB, or 256MB if you have more than that. Just like in the previous Mini, the video adapter does NOT have its own memory. But it is an incomparably better graphics chip and the memory is also considerably faster, so it's still a huge improvement.

And if you buy a low end Mini and upgrade it to more than 1GB then it will automatically start to use 256MB for its video memory as well.

I see now, thank you. The so called high end mini shoud have the 2,26 ghz processor standard to be called high end really.

The high end mini is the same thing as the base mini. You could BTO configure a base mini to be the exact same thing as the high end mini.

Basically, there's only 1 mini.

There is no high end Mini, one comes upgraded with a larger hard drive and more memory so you don't have to crack it open. The $599 Mini just means you have to upgrade the memory and hard drive your self which means you run the risk of destroying a brand new machine if you have no experience with cracking a Mini open plus technically you void the warranty.

Just because people do it does not make it right so crack open with caution! I owned two Mini's and did the surgery myself which is not for the faint of heart if you do not have the proper tools or electronic experience.

I'm not disagreeing with you as I don't have a clue with this either way but it is listed on the Apple site as being 128MB & 256MB respectively(see screencap below), maybe they have throttled the Mini that has the 120Gb drive, ...oh no ...I hope not, maybe they have :( .

Would be really good to see some real benchmarks with the two Mini's, it's taking a l_o_n_g time for any to appear, .....anyone got some?.

Any knowledgeable thoughts on this out there, it would help to explain the confusing price gap.

No...you're saying that. I'm saying the new prices may.... no, will scare off some customers. "In certain territories" as you even quote me. I'm evidently aware of the currency situation yet you redundantly bring it up again anyway. hmm.

Customer's don't care about that stuff, they care about the number being bigger than it was last week, then they sulk off and buy used, with no new money for Apple. So while we're at it, yeah, maybe they should have absorbed the cost a bit, heh.
