I misspoke earlier as polarization doesn't reflect light but rather uses vertical slats to transmit vertical light and absorb horizontal light (typically light that's bounced off the ground), thereby reducing glare. I could definitely see that absorbing some or all of the infrared beams.

Here's a good explanation: https://www.revantoptics.com/blogs/the-lens/how-do-polarized-sunglasses-work

You do have to explicitly order them polarized, and it usually raises the price. However I've also seen cheap polarized sunglasses at the drug store for $20. I usually stick with polarized Ray-Bans because I trust the company.

More importantly than polarization (unless you're driving), make sure your sunglasses have UV protection. You don't want a sunburn on your eye or skin cancer.
Interesting link, ta.

And yes, avoid crappy sunglasses. They were both bought from a decent opticians, not prescription lenses. I shudder at the thought the damage crappy ones have on peoples eyes, and crappy sunglasses probably amount to the majority sold 😬 The “cheap” ones were £30, I think of them as cheap merely because I don’t like their design much, and I’m not afraid to leave them in the glove box.

This is another one of those I’ll believe it when I see it things.
Same here. Although if the likelihood of this happening will be in a few years, it really would give me pause for upgrading my iPhone. I don't want to upgrade to a model that uses Dynamic Island if in a few years time it will be superseded by this other technology, although I do think the Dynamic Island is pretty neat and an awesome way to solve a technical issue.

Long time Mac users know that Steve would've fired people for that dynamic island bs. Insulting to his legacy to be honest.
Really? Hmm...I guess I don't get a sense that Steve Jobs would feel that way. I've been using Macs since 1989 with my first Mac SE/30. To me, Dynamic Island is a very clever way to solve a technology issue -- meaning, good technology for under the screen FaceID does not yet exist or is too expensive to implement. Until then, Dynamic Island seems to be a great way to solve the issue.

I don't want Face ID. It doesn't work with sunglasses, it doesn't work from weird angles, etc. (It's all for safety and security reasons, but it's nonetheless a headache).

None of these problems exist with Touch ID, which works reliably in all situations except rain and gloves. It can easily be incorporated under the display using existing technology.
Absolutely!! Hopefully they’ll get rid of the unreliable FaceId

That’s a little far out isn’t it? Like 3 years away… but then again, I would not want to get the first iteration. The island is ok but not a massive gain of screen space compared to a 12 pro when I held them side by side at the store.

I assume then mine aren’t polarised. Tbh, I’ve no idea what polarisation is/does, haha, and I expect you have to purposely buy ones that are?

Of mine, one pair are cheap anti glare ones I leave in the car, the other ones I wear about are decent ones, £70 or so, can’t recall the brand, not Ray Ban.
Mine are polarised and work fine. They were cheap, about £100 but they’ve worked with FaceID since day 1 despite being a completely different shape and size to my normal glasses

The "iPhone 17 Pro" will be the first iPhone to feature under-panel Face ID technology, according to display analyst Ross Young.

In an updated roadmap shared on Twitter earlier today, Young claimed that the under-display Face ID technology will still be accompanied by a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. This implementation is expected to persist until 2027's "Pro" iPhone models, which will also move the camera under the display for a true "all screen" appearance.

The forecast differs from Young's initial roadmap shared in May 2022. Previously, he expected 2024's iPhone 16 Pro models to be the first to feature under-panel Face ID technology. Last month, Young said that this one-year delay was due to "sensor issues." The change means that the two display cutouts that currently compose the Dynamic Island will apparently persist unchanged through three successive "Pro" iPhone generations.

Young also said that the standard iPhone 17 models will adopt ProMotion, a feature that is currently exclusive to Apple's high-end devices.

Whoa now, slow down

Ever since Face ID unlocked my phone using my nephew's faces. I turned it off and chose a 6 digit PIN. It seems a pretty low security measure anyway. Even if it worked 100%, anyone (criminals and police) can gain access simply by holding it to your face.

Long live the dynamic continent!. No UX design student would approve the course with that design, but Apple can do whatever poor design it wants and we will praise it. Shame in us…
Never buying a phone with distraction island (okay, I did buy an iPhone 14…but then I returned it). It was little more than a distracting gimmick in the time I had with it—admittedly not long but more than enough. :)

I will never understand how anyone can take rumors in 2023 about a 2027 product seriously. Is Ross Young a time traveller?

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I tried to scan my face with sunglasses on and iOS explicitly told me that Face ID does not work with sunglasses. With that being said, mine are polarized, and that's very likely to throw off the infrared beams by deflecting them.
Yeah. It depends on if your sunglasses pass infrared or block most of it.
Face ID works for me with some but not the majority of my sunglasses.

FaceID works fine with all my prescription polarized sunglasses.

Mine are polarized and face id has worked fine with them on every iPhone so far. Likewise, when I've tried a non polarized kid's pair, it still works. I wonder what the difference is.

That's not wasted space... it's more screen RE to the left & right, above and below... and sometimes within. ;)

Since there's already been a bit of confusion about this post, this is a joke... poking at the "more screen RE" spin slung when notch showed up on MBpro.
It is wasted. The space left and right provides the same info than previous models. What matters is the vertical space between the bottom of the screen and the lower part of the notch/DI, and with the DI it is less (as it was less also with the iPhone 12 notch).
