While I'm looking forward to under the screen FaceID, I would also like to see under the screen TouchID for dual authentication at the same time. If apple can't figure out under the screen TouchID, I wouldn't mind it if it were moved to the back of the phone or to the power button.

Long time Mac users know that Steve would've fired people for that dynamic island bs. Insulting to his legacy to be honest.
What's insulting to Steve's legacy is spouting opinions on his behalf. Steve is deceased. He does not and cannot have opinions about Apple design since October 2011, and pretending you know what he would say, do, or think at this point is disrespectful.

No, but suppliers need a few years to build assembly lines. They need to order the machines that build the display.
Yes. Apple is under the unique constraint that they have to secure supply for over 200 million units sold per year. The lead time for finalizing the feature set of a new model is probably a year or two before launch, and that’s after the R&D work. Manufacturers with lower unit sales can move much faster with new features.

I can't be the only one who thinks Dynamic Island is taking up too much vertical space. It sticks out like a sore thumb on the screen.
It's most, most usually not an issue and I love face ID, unlike front camera ID, it unlocks in the dark without flash, ect. Until the 17 Pro!

So basically, a 3 year major refresh cycle. Fits well with the people who got the 14 Pro.
Kinda how it's always been, isn't it?

All businesses first priority is profit margins, aka keeping shareholders happy, so that's what Apple will do too.

The only thing that could make throw a wrench in Apple's very slow crawl towards that all-display iPhone is if some competitor drops one that does the same much sooner.

Then again, competitors doing something today that Apple is years behind on has rarely forced Apple to jump the gun.

Only a worrying drop in all iPhone sales could speed things up. But that's about as unlikely to happen as Apple not launching a new iPhone every year.

I have long been an advocate of apple moving to nomenclature that uses the year of release in the name. For example, iphone 2023, iOS 2023, MacOS 2023, etc.
Unfortunately, I think Apple benefits a bit from the vagueness (or confusion, if you will):

Selling an iPhone 11 in 2023 to someone who knows when it came out might be a bit tough.

But naming it "iPhone 2019" would be like yelling it through a speaker phone. Nobody buying an iPhone would ever have to ask "what year did it launch?".

Good for consumers, yes. But not for a business who has three generations of smartphones in its annual lineup.

I think these somewhat arbitrary numbers that iPhones currently get do both well: Give an indication of which one is newer but also doesn't outright state how old it is right in the name.

That depends if I need the new sensor tech the iphone 15 Pro is rumored to bring and if I want faster transfer speeds with USB C, the latter currently not so much, and if I can have decent screen protector options with the beveled screen, because I currently enjoy the best fit I've had with a screen protector ever since I switched to the 14PM from Android last year.

huh, I suppose it's easy to speculate on things 3-4 years out...

THIS JUST IN
iPhone 69 will have holographic and smell-o-meter features limited to the iPhone Pro max ultimate AR/VR rugged edition

I imagine it has made their devices feel cheap and worthless, they should throw them in the bin and wait three years for this unreleased phone.
There’s a public garbage can in the park across the street from me that iPhone 14 owners are welcome to use. Please turn off “Find My” before disposal.

Sent from my iPhone 12

I'm ambivalent about putting sensors and cameras under the screen when removing them from our direct line of sight is already possible. Yes, I would like to see as much of the screen I'm viewing but I'd 100% prefer a slightly larger bezel above the screen than holes or notches in the display

What new sensor? If you're talking about the capacitive swipe sensors, do you need that?

I think we have gone too far with iPhone model numbers..
Apple needs to reboot and release an entirely new smartphone.
It is true, it's getting a bit silly. Other phone manufacturers give their phones different names so they can reset numbers or not have numbers at all. I mean we used to have computers called things like Macintosh IIfx... and we don't have an iMac 18.

People propose this as if it's a novel idea. How does Apple sell previous iPhone models without using a model? Mac doesn't need a number because it's not updated every year.

If we’re still dealing with the same old metal / glass slab form factor come iphone 17 then I’d say there are bigger problems..

Absolutely!

I just don't understand the increasing percentage of arrogant, absurd, and useless posts on the front page article threads. This thread has over 100 posts, and at least 80% of them are childish and nonsensical utterances, to wit: "it will be here in 2025, 2041, and on and on". This kind of unhelpful and childish responses are becoming the norm in these threads. What is the purpose of this? Can anyone tell me? Is this what MR really wants their site to be known for. There is almost no credibility here anymore. It's as if every post is a tryout for a comedy club, but none are really funny.

I'm sure this will be my last post before removal for my observations, which is fine. There is almost nothing of intelligence here to respond to anymore. It's so sad. Most of the front page articles are worth reading. But the comments that follow, are well....

Doesn't change the fact that it will be ridiculous by the time we get to the iPhone 26.

Hate to say this but I switched to a S23 ultra and I've been way happier. I can unlock with my fingerprint or face, better camera, better everything to be honest

I don't want Face ID. It doesn't work with sunglasses, it doesn't work from weird angles, etc. (It's all for safety and security reasons, but it's nonetheless a headache).

None of these problems exist with Touch ID, which works reliably in all situations except rain and gloves. It can easily be incorporated under the display using existing technology.
I miss the hell out of Touch ID. At least I can still use it on my Mac and iPad.
