I would avoid Straight Talk if you use data more than 2.5GB, because they will reduce your LTE speed to less than 1Mbps if you use more than 2.5GB.

Try prepaid Tmobile, go to walmart and pick up the $30 month prepaid plan Unlimited text, 100 voice minutes and unlimited data but only up 5 GB LTE speed then after 5GB, they will reduce your speed too but 5 GB is a lot.

I know about the data cap and I won't have to worry about that because I don't use over 1.5 GB of data every month. T Mobile doesn't work where I live I don't think because I live in the country sort of but StraightTalk does work out here because my mom and brother use it. So can you tell me the full process?

go to straight talk website and buy the micro sim card bundled with a prepaid plan for $45 plan first, then you need to cut that sim card to nano size when you get it. then put in your sim card to your iphone and then you can either go to straight talk website and activate your plan or call them. That's it.

Boost Mobile is Sprint. It cannot be unlocked.

Have your friend return it to Boost Mobile and buy a full priced unlocked iPhone 5c from the Apple store.

I purchased a used Verizon 5c online for $350. I put in a T-mobile sim and had no problem activating the phone on T-mobile's service. I signed up the $3 a day plan so I could just test their service. With the t-mobile sim in my phone I was able to SURF and TALK at the same time. I ultimately decided against T-mobile service and put back the Verizon SIM card and called Verizon to activate service on the phone. No problems what so ever. What I DO NOT understand is why I can NOT surf and Talk at the same time with a Verizon SIM card in my phone?? I know that Verizon's network can handle talking and surfing simultaneously as the androids phone on Verizon do so. I know the iPhone can do it as well as it did so when I had a T-mobile sim inserted into the unlocked Verizon phone. So as consumers we are lead to believe that Apple didn't want to put another antennae in the phone when in reality it has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the design, weight etc of the iPhone because the ability to surf and Talk is held solely in the SIM card. Why then couldn't Verizon incorporated whatever was needed in their SIM card to provide this service to their customers??? Anyone have any thoughts on this??

It's not the SIM card. it's because Verizon is CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM and use a channel for talk and another for data. Verizon doesn't.

I'm still confused. It says in that article that Verizon's androids phone incorporate a 2nd radio to enable voice and data at the same time so that's why those phone are able to do that on Verizon's network. But I have already proven that my iPhone does allow for voice and data with a T-mobile sim therefore it has NOTHING to do with the phone but all to do with the SIM card. If the same phone allows for voice and data on one network and not the other and the only thing different is the SIM card then I would denounce it's the SIM card that allows that feature and nothing at all about a 2 radio in the phone. What then am I missing??

Sigh! The SIM card is not the Radio in the iPhone. Verizon uses CDMA. CDMA is different technology than GSM. The android phones have 2 CDMA radios. The iPhone only has only 1. That is why you cannot talk and text at the same time. That's what you're not getting.

Where would you recommend buying the phone. Would I buy a Verizon one from eBay? Or the apple site directly and choose the tmobile unlocked version? This is the part that's confusing to me. Could I also be able to just go to a store like Best Buy, Radioshack, etc. and just ask for a device only Verizon model or what?

Go to the Apple store, ask for device only. Do not say unlocked. some stores let you, some do not. Best buy would not let pay device only, plus their device only prices are 50$ higher than anyone else and you will have to go through price matching.

Verizon stores or .com will not let you unless you do a month to month contract which does a soft credit check.

Ebay will work if you are okay with paying more.

OR

Just go to Apple.com, select the phone you want, scroll down to T mobile, ships in 1-2 weeks. Will work with any GSM carrier, just not Verizon. The benefit with Verizon is that it works with every GSM and CDMA carrier.

But he has payed full price to boost mobile...thn too how come it is not unlocked?

Ugh I hate that the nearest Apple store is about 3 hours away. But thank you go the advice!! I'm probably gonna end up ordering off eBay though. If all see fails ill order from Apple directly. If I order the T mobile from Apple's site, would I just pop in my Straight Talk sim before I turn it on?

Is the straight talk AT&T ? Then yes.

You can put the SIM card in before turning on the phone by the way

If you purchase full price FROM THE APPLE STORE it's unlocked. Boost mobile is Sprint and Sprint does not unlock their phones. Have him return it. He bought a locked phone.

Yeah they sell AT&T micro sims and T-Mobile micro sims which I don't really get but whatever. I know I'll have to cut it down to nano anyways.

As mentioned by AndrewR23, when buying a phone physically at an Apple store: tell the Apple employee that you want to buy a "device only" phone. It's a big no no to mention "unlocked."

Please take a minute or more to read all the info below carefully - because it answers just about all questions most of the people are already asking in this thread...I have included a video showing Verizon 5S running on Straight Talk + Verizon at the bottom link available

Thanks to the FCC agreement when they sold Verizon the LTE Network - All Verizon LTE capable Smartphones are FACTORY UNLOCKED - I have tested iPhone 5, 5C and 5S on Multiple networks and so have millions of other owners! - Everything works, no difference LTE 4G you name it![Can be used in USA + Worldwide Unlike Sprint iPhones] - This is not a Myth...Its a True Statement

Image

As you can see the model #'s for the North American iPhone 5S and 5C for the GSM and Verizon CDMA are the same, however these are two separate devices

GSM A1533/A1532 = CDMA Disabled & No way to Enable it! [Will Support 100% 3G/4G/LTE on All North American Carriers except Sprint & Verizon]
CDMA A1533/A1532 = GSM + CDMA Enabled [Will Support 100% 3G/4G/LTE on All North American Carriers except Sprint)

If you buy a Verizon iPhone 5S/5C = It will work on All GSM Networks + Verizon and can be flashed to other CDMA Networks! except Sprint because Verizon & Sprint do not allow phones purchased from other carriers on their network = IMEI/ESN must be from a pre-approved or iPhone sold by the respective carrier.

So those of you that are confused or want to know which phone to buy at full retail price?

1) Verizon iPhone 5S/5C = True world phone with flexibility of using it on a CDMA Network (Access All GSM Networks Worldwide + Verizon)

2) AT&T/T-Mobile or GSM Unlocked A1533/A1532 model = Will work on All GSM Networks Worldwide = Sufficient for majority of the buyers out there.

**Those of you buying phones on contract/subsidy it doesn't really make sense for you to buy the Verizon iPhone 5C/5S vs AT&T or T-Mobile...just go with the one your carrier is giving you**

Additional info:

Before you start wondering, Yes the GSM models do support Verizon LTE, however you will never be able to access the networks because Verizon & Sprint require their devices to fall back to CDMA for Talking, checking balance etc etc. as well as the entire PRE-APPROVED IMEI restriction in place.

Also some of you may recall that the iPhone 5 A1429 model had two variations:
1) GSM (Sold in international markets/outside of north america)
2) CDMA+GSM (Sold by Verizon Unlocked and Sprint Locked)

Note: Some random carriers like US Celluar...I have no idea If/When CDMA/LTE will work on iPhones, I am only aware of all the info presented above and have done my best to explain what is and isn't, for some general things you may/may not understand...just try to use some common sense...if a network operates on same bands/frequencies or uses towers of other networks like Straight Talk uses AT&T/T-Mobile etc etc then things will work and so on....

What is Unlocking:
- Unlocking is a method performed on GSM Smartphones, Some use Codes, while iPhones are all done through iTunes (IF your iPhone is locked, you can request unlocking from your Carrier for FREE given you have fulfilled the requirements - usually 90 days of service or you can get it done from a 3rd party - However 3rd Party = Cost = Currently AT&T iPhones can be unlocked fairly low (Click Here), while T-Mobile are far more expensive around $115 on average)
- Unlock is only needed to be done one time, It is permanent and remains forever! - You can switch SIM cards as often as you like with any carrier as you like that uses SIM card based technology (roughly 99% of the carriers worldwide use SIM cards)
- Verizon/Sprint iPhone 4 = Can only be flashed to other CDMA Carriers (Excluding Sprint as they do not allow it)
- Verizon/Sprint iPhone 4S = Can only be flashed to other CDMA Carriers or Unlocked for International USE ONLY (Cannot be used in USA)
- Verizon iPhone 5/5C/5S = All come Factory Unlocked = You do not need to do anything or request unlock or buy unlocking service = Use on any GSM Network in USA + Worldwide
- Sprint iPhone 5/5C/5S = Locked and Even when you get it unlocked, can ONLY BE USED OUTSIDE USA on GSM Networks - Sprint iPhone Unlocking Services are rare-to-non-existent. Sprint is very strict!

What is Flashing:
- Flashing is a process much like Unlocking, however it is not as flexible, Flashing is done to CDMA smartphones for CDMA networks, its kind of like adding the IMEI/ESN into the CDMA Carrier's Database, Note once flashed this smartphone can only be used on that particular network, should you wish to use it on another network, you will have to get it Flashed again.

I Currently have the Verizon iPhone 5S A1533 and Verizon iPhone 5C A1532 Models on Hand - Everything stated above has been confirmed 100% on both units.

@Satnam1989 -So I live in Malta. I have a few questions that I hope you don't mind me asking due to your extensive knowledge on the subject. I was wondering what type of iPhone 5/5s/5c would be best to buy from ebay. From what I understand a Verizon iPhone will work with any network abroad. Does this include bad esn phones? or are they not able to have bad ESN since they are unlocked? (confused about this) Also if I buy an at+t phone are these easy to unlock and will they even need to be unlocked to use abroad? I will only ever need to use a GSM network.

Which ever model you buy on ebay make sure it's unlocked. The 3rd party unlocking service are no longer working.

I read through the forum posts and a lot of questions were answered. However I am looking to purchase a US Cellular iPhone 5S and need to know if it comes unlocked ? Any thoughts guys ?

US Cellular I believe uses Sprint. If Sprint it cannot be unlocked.

Just had to post this about one rep from AT&T at a local Mall telling me my Verizon iPhone will not work at all with AT&T, and I told them if I have an unlocked phone it can just swap the Sim card. He did not budge one bit. He was alone, so no one else could weigh in. Just love some places that give false information.

You should have asked him for an active AT&T SIM card and put it into your Verizon iPhone to prove him wrong. :)

Should have, but I was actually going over to T-Mobil. T-Mobil allows one to try out their coverage for a couple of days for $10.00 with a temporary phone number. Walked by AT&T store, and entered just to ask about their plans but this rep disappointed me, so I walked out and headed for T-Mobil :D. I should call AT&T corporate office and let them know they may have lost a customer for this mistake.

I made a stupid mistake of buying a Sprint iPhone 5 (locked ) and now they say they won't unlock it even to use it internationally. A friend of mine suggest something called a r-Sim 9. Do any of you guys know about this ? Does it work to unlock the phone for international use ? I check some videos on YouTube and I was unsure if it would work.
