I made a stupid mistake of buying a Sprint iPhone 5 (locked ) and now they say they won't unlock it even to use it internationally. A friend of mine suggest something called a r-Sim 9. Do any of you guys know about this ? Does it work to unlock the phone for international use ? I check some videos on YouTube and I was unsure if it would work.
Can you return it for a refund?

Well, I tried T-Mobil for part of a day, and what a let down it was for me, and the area I live in. I experienced either no coverage, Edge most of the time, some 3G and very little 4G. In my home its none to Edge. :( Not even one day of use. Went straight back to Verizon. They have a long way to go but wish them luck.

T-Mobil tech rep that handles Apple products tried to fix the issues, but told me finally that I bought a Verizon model, not the T-Mobil version with the 1700 band and that was why I did not get good coverage. Unknown if that was true. Not to up with this stuff other than, it works or it does not.

Unfortunately I bought it on Craigslist without doing much research. And hence returning it for a refund is out of the question.
List it on Craigslist and a Sprint customer will buy it. You'll get at least some of your money back.

No that is not true. The iPhone 5S has only one model. The Verizon and T-Mobile version support the same bands including AWS. The Verizon version adds CDMA.

The Verizon version DOES support the needed bands for T-Mobile. I'm using a gold Verizon 5s with T-Mobile. I get all supported bands including T-Mobile LTE.

And that is what I thought but was not going to press the point. So I just canceled the account and went back to Verizon where I knew I would get good coverage. Perhaps someday T-Mobil and Sprint will get better coverage but I bet their pricing will change as well. :D

T-Mobile is in talks to buy spectrum from Verizon. If the deal goes through hopefully they will improve coverage in your area.

Just because they don't sell the off-contract Verizon models online doesn't mean you can't get one. I went to my local Apple store today and they were more than happy to sell me an "off-contract" Verizon iPhone 5S.

The sales guy was a little cagey when I explained that I needed an off-contract iPhone to use with my current AT&T SIM and contract, clearly he had been coached what to say (e.g. "I've heard about people who've tried that" ;)) but they didn't have any issues selling what amounts to an full price, unlocked VZW iPhone with no strings attached. They seemed to have plenty of stock on hand.

Interestingly enough, it doesn't actually say Verizon/VZW or even CDMA anywhere on the 5S box, but you can look up the part numbers (i.e. ME347LL/A, ME344LL/A, ME341LL/A, etc.) easily enough via any online search engine.

Anyone trim down an ATT Gophone sim to use in the 5S? Do you still get visual voicemail and all the ATT bells and whistles?

I mostly use phones for, ironically, phone calls and the data I would use is mostly in wifi covered areas so I don't need a lot of data and should be able to live with the $25 basic + $5 data go phone plan.

I used to use a Go Phone SIM with my iPhone. Everything worked fine.

Hi, can someone tell me if I were to buy an AT &T phone from the USA (ebay) how can I use it in Canada on Rogers or Wind? What is the easiest way to factory unlock it? Thanks!

The 3rd party factory unlock services are no longer working. Buy one that is already unlocked.

Planning to buy an iPhone 5s Verizon

I have gone through this thread and great information by the initiator.

I have understood that Verizon phone is unlocked so we can use it on ATT and TMobile. I am planning to buy a brand new Verizon phone on Craigslist. This phone has never been activated. So my question is do we need to activate the phone on Verizon before I use a different sim card or the phone is ready to be used with ATT/TMobile out of the box? Once I buy the phone and I figure out that the phone needs to be activated first on Verizon then I will be in trouble.

No need to be activated on Verizon prior. I bought a Verizon 5s for use on T Mobile two weeks after initial launch. I popped the verizon sim out before even turning phone on, put my tmobile nano sim in, powered on and has been working fine on t mobile ever since.

This, except I'm on AT&T instead of T-Mobile.

Hey John,

So sorry to bother you but confirmed EVERYTHING works? Voice, all data, visual voicemail, etc on AT&T? I just bought an unlocked iPhone 5C but to use primarily overseas (but on AT&T here) and would rather have the Verizon model with the whole "shebang" than just the GSM model. So if so then I'll return that and buy the unlocked Verizon model. Thanks!

Disregard

Disregard all of this. I just went and bought a Verizon model iPhone 5C yesterday to try before I returned the other phone, and yes everything works. Voice, Data, voicemail, everything!

But no LTE, right?
LTE works. The Verizon iPhone 5s and 5c are the same model as the AT&T and T-Mobile, except GSM and CDMA is enabled.

I am using a Verizon iPhone 5s with T-Mobile and I get LTE. It will work with AT&T LTE as well.

You are lucky, verizon is said to have disabled lte outside of verizons networks in the us.

It will work with AT&T LTE as well.

Has this been confirmed to work everywhere in the U.S.?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 5s to use with AT&T GoPhone and want to be
sure that LTE works with the full price Verizon model. Otherwise, I'll just get the
SIM-free version (but have to lose the CDMA functionality).

Thanks!
