It’s because emojis aren’t an Apple product, I guess.

The actual way emoji are rendered is absolutely Apple-specific. Microsoft's rendering, for instance, is quite different.

There's quite a variety of styles. For example:

1586525316848.png

Same emoji, sixteen different styles. Apple didn't really have to go for the one in the top left, but they did.

Ok this is gonna be a long one, so strap in folks.

Yeah, like I really need an emoji with a guy in a wedding dress!

As a compromise, how about if the delayed Unicode 14 could include both a "man in a wedding dress" and a "bigoted angry guy". I imagine they could probably skip the skin-tone support for that one and just default it to white.

most of us have a disdain for emojis

Unless by "us" you mean emojiphobes, I'm not sure I can agree with that.

What will the MacRumors forums do without new emoji to get enraged about?

This thread is the answer: they'll still get enraged, even without new ones.

I can't believe they're putting so much energy on such useless stuff..

Really? Of all the things people waste time and money on, emoji is your issue?

That coronavirus graphic we see everywhere is begging for it's own entry

There's already a microbe emoji, how is that not appropriate? ?

Emojis are the biggest waste of time and one of the worst "standards" being pushed.

So the obvious solution is to go online and complain about it, wasting some of your own time, just so you can be part of the time wasting.

Emojis are a political playground / virtue signaling by these companies.

I can't respond to this because if I do Im sure I'll be told it's outside PRSI.

The comments on this site about anything emoji-related are always so annoyingly predictable. We get it, you’re high and mighty because you hate on emoticons.

The irony of how many comments claiming emoji are useless, that could be said so much better with just a single emoji: ❄

Is there an emoji symbol for corona virus yet?
There is "microbe" which also appears for "Virus" in the emoji viewer on macOS/emoji suggestions on iOS ?

Looking forward to the social distancing emoji.

Surely that's just the space bar and the medical mask face.

? ?

Finding the right emoji is too time consuming as it is.

On iOS, it'll suggest them based on words you've used. If you're on macOS, I suggest the emoji viewer.

the terror of genderless Santa

You know what's terrifying? That you think what's in Santa's pants is of any consequence? Given that Santa is essentially an invention for children, and given the prevalence of abuse by "trusted" older male figures in society these days, I'd much prefer a ****ing genderless Santa: smooth like a ken doll.

why are users here so triggered by emoji?

They can't find ❄

developers need to put a lot of work into it

Which developers? For the vast, vast majority this will have zero impact. There's a bit of work for each "vendor" to create the graphics (hint: not developers/programmers) and maybe a tiny bit of technical work to assign specific artwork to the right code points.

For a developer writing code, unless you're specifically manipulating emoji, it's likely just a one-time thing to check (and possibly fix): do you store strings properly as UTF8, so that emoji and other unicode characters are preserved and then display correctly.

Is there something I am missing?

A sense of fun?

People seem to be up in arms that there are symbols in the table they don't need in their daily lives, and treating it like a political statement.

There's no picket line emoji. That's the real problem.

imagine getting this upset over a man in a wedding dress.

Imagine getting this upset over a picture of a cartoon man in a wedding dress. I expect seeing an actual man in a wedding dress would result in a panic attack.

Flip the switch off, and the emoji keyboard and all emojis in messages turn to little boxes.
You can literally disable the emoji keyboard now - you've always been able to.

As for not displaying them: would you also expect your phone to not render Chinese or Japanese or Thai characters if they happen to be in some text, because you don't have that keyboard enabled?

It looks like the collection of princesses you'll meet on a Disney cruise! Back when there were cruises.

emojiphobes
Congratulations. This is the first use of the word emojiphobes at MacRumors.

The meaning is clear, and I'm surprised nobody has thought to use it before.

No I'm specifically referring to emojis which IOS should be able to separate from other unicode characters. Let's be clear this is not for me, I like emojis. This is for those who disdain emojis.

New ones are getting created because people ask for them. But this isn't Apple creating new emoji, the Emoji subcommittee of the Unicode Consortium does that. Apple simply implements the character sets that the Unicode Consortium has made part of the standard. If you want the continual accretion of new emoji to stop, talk some sense into the Emoji subcommittee.

You mean there were so many people asking for the Dodo emoji that the Emoji subcommittee finally gave in and said "We will just give them what they want". I find that hard to believe.

Its not fun to scroll through of 10 pages of useless emoji to find that 1 emoji you want.

They're based on proposals. Here is the proposal for the Dodo: https://web.archive.org/web/20190718050800/http://www.unicode.org/L2/L2017/17441-dodo-emoji.pdf

If you're on iOS, just type the word, it'll be suggested.

If you're on macOS, open the Emoji viewer, and type the word, it and other similar matches will be shown.

The iOS method is quite limited, though. A lot of emoji aren't findable at all that way. And within the result, you can't get the detailed picker (so you can't, say, change skin color).

I hope we eventually get macOS's highly powerful Emoji & Symbols UI in iOS.

replacing a familiar silver-bearded and round Santa face
(a) it's not a replacement. You can use whichever one you want.
(b) ... In every Apple emoji variant, the emoji called 'Santa' has a white beard. So which is it? White or Silver? Are you opposed to the "black Santa" emoji too?

But to go as far as to sexualise this "children's invention" by merit of the emoji alone, debate genitalia (?) and throw in the possibility of children's abuse?? Friend, if that's what crossed your mind, I would recommend counselling.
You specifically called out "a female Santa" - have you never seen a woman dress as Santa (slutty Santa doesn't count for this case) in real life? They generally still wear a fake beard, and generally aren't distinguishable from "a male Santa". So if your issue is with their gender, the only difference is what's in their pants.

What's even more ridiculous about your complaint is that the "Mx Santa" emoji is not even specifically female. It's just un-gendered. It's a combination (i.e. two other emojis + a zero-width joiner) the ungendered "Adult" emoji, and the Christmas tree.

I'm not even saying a fraction of what you assume/assert I did. I think you're just looking for excuses to rage-post a monologue. And you're the one still talking about stuff in people's pants.

The a-gendered combination of faces is what falls into the uncanny valley. That's all.

i’d rather be woke than naive.

edit: how is it genderswapping when it’s genderless santa? hurrrdurr

Poor thing. It's ok.

You said you don't need a female Santa. I responded to that.

If you meant something else, I suggest you say something else mate.

Sure. I'm clearly the one who's angry here - not the people who are complaining about having too many little pictograms to use in text messages, or that an imaginary character for children cannot possibly be either a woman or beardless... it's me. You got me. I guess I'm still trying to cope with the guilt because I shaved off some stubble the other day and my kid built and then locked himself in a panic room because it was so traumatising for him.

How is my original post bizarre? Y'all are contradicting yourselves. That's just how Santa is collectively embedded, as a plump bearded old man, be it Catholicism or Coca Cola who bears the trademark.

It's how he has been "collectively embedded" for less than two centuries, and culture changes.

Don't like it? Your problem. Genderswapping Santa is a adult construct to pander to a woke audience, and simply not something a child would recognise.

That doesn't make sense, though. Why would a child care what Santa used to look like? It was before they were born.

Aside from all of the above, it's just not a good design, and we're blowing it way out of proportion.

That could be. I do indeed not find the design very compelling. But that doesn't seem to be what's upsetting you about it.

I'm not suggesting anything. They burst out crying because they don't recognise him or he's registered differently in their memory or he looks weird. Just watch the videos.

Sounds like a valuable life lesson to them.

So, another 150 years from today, your "concerns" will look ridiculous. I'm sure I can dig up some newspaper article from 1870 about how Coca-Cola is destroying Christianity by putting Santa in a red jacket.

I'm not hung up at all, it's just an emoji, and the genderless version seems off. The other guy who threw in genitalia and children's abuse seemed way more hung up than I am.

So, what are you suggesting really? That while a child looks up Santa on his/her keyboard they'll delve into a postmodernist approach of how st Nicholas would be nowadays instead?

I'm saying that a genderless Santa opens up new possibilities, that it's a net win, and that people concoct strange arguments because they fear change.

as a plump bearded old man,

Wait so now he has to be fat and old too? So you're against women, the unbearded, and the non-obese and the young or middle aged, to be an imaginary gift-giving character?

Can we at least make him anatomically correct then, and have him with a prosthetic foot because of the inevitable diabetes? Perhaps he should also have an oxygen bottle with him. No way all that physical labour isn't gonna make him wheeze a little.

be it Catholicism.
I'm pretty sure that's a different white guy with a beard they're into.

I’m making light of people wasting their time complaining about other people “wasting time” creating new emojis that the former group of people could ignore with zero effort.

you could just ignore the emoji you don’t use.

im sure Apple will get right on that and remove all emoji forthwith.

Apple should have a switch in settings: Emoji on/off. Flip the switch off, and the emoji keyboard and all emojis in messages turn to little boxes. Problem solved.
You can turn the keyboard off now - Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, "Edit", and remove "Emoji". Turning them on-screen into boxes? Then people will complain about all the little boxes. How about simply don't visit websites or converse with people who use them?

No emu emoji yet. I look forward to people complaining that we don't need an emu emoji in a future thread.
It's a terrible situation. For the thousands of times per day that I need an emu emoji, I've been forced to settle for U+1315E, also know as EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPH G026A. It's the Sacred Ibis symbol -- ? -- obviously a poor substitute for a colorful cartoon emu.

I guess for most animals we could just use the emoji of what they taste like as a substitute.

? would get a lot of use.

1) I would like to show my respect that you actually put the effort in to bring me the Dodo proposal.
2)I think the emoji subcommittee will add any emoji for any reason. Their argument is that, there are people who searched for Dodo on Google, so we should add Dodo to emojis. Soon we will have Britney Spears emoji and Covid19 emoji. Anything that people will search for should be turned into an emoji
3)Typing the name of the emoji and given the correct one is cool, but I would like to do it without having words suggested for me just emojis. Is this possible? It really takes that much OFF the screen for something I don't need.
