Itally??? who's in itally? Release it in a proper country/continent - Australia. It's a laugh, Australia has both an extensive GSM, EDGE and 3G network and has done so since the iphone ever launched... it's about time Australia get's something...

well, if you look at the number of mobile telephone lines and handsets sold you could be in for quite interesting surprises, my friend :)

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch: Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

If true it'd be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because I might get the same sort of deal in Australia, hopefully unlocked too... But a curse because I'll have to save much more =[

Some countries get unlocked phones, some won't, and some won't get the phone at all? Jeesh, tired of this.

genius or just plain blond?

a pre-WWDC would maintain the integrity of WWDC as a software, developers' conference (and not intended for hardware launches)???? maybe????

optimistic.........

who's in italy? around 60 millions people, more or less six times the whole population of Australia

and the amount of mobile phones in italy is in average two phones per each person. Total: 120 millions. What about refreshing a little bit your geographical knowledges? :D:D

the US would get the first 3G iphones. Total BS.

The article doesn't say that Italy will be the first region globally. Just that they will launch the 3G version in a few weeks.

I'm from the Netherlands and there are soooo many people here walking around in amsterdam with jailbroken IPhones. It has been rumored for a while that the IPhone will be introduced here too, but I guess it only makes sense to do this for the 3G version. I feel really sorry for these people, when on top of the fact that they "missed out" on the 3G version, they also could have a legal unlocked version.

I think it would great if Apple would do this. I guess they woke up and saw the potential of opening up, with all those IPhones "missing"..

Must we continue to go over this! Firstly American prices are without tax...and secondly prices cannot reflect day to day exchange rates. Dollar to Euro I guarantee you make more than your American equivalent!

Yes we must, because even when you take off the tax, there is a large difference.

in US$

MacBook in the US - 1299
MacBook in Ireland - 1565
MacBook in Germany - 1592

I don't see the problem. Visual voicemail is no technical prodigy. Italian phones have had a similar service for more than 10 years, where the user would get an SMS with the number of the caller who left a message. Steve makes it sound like he discovered the wheel :)

Visual voicemail allows for random access to voicemail messages from the phone.

With the system you have described, it sounds like once you have received this SMS you would have to ring another number to actually listen to the message.

For the last time (not likely but it adds the emphasis I'm after) the Irish don't get paid in US dollars nor do the Germans nor does anyone else in Europe. I've said it before and I'll certainly have to say it again. The $1300 to an American making $50k is the exact same as (I can't find the Euro button...) 1300 Euros to someone getting paid 50k Euros. It's not about exchange rates - it's about the value of the product to the consumer.

It is VERY HARD being an apple fan in Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

Apple fan? After being ripped off from German Telecom I turned from Apple fan to Apple hater overnight. I still use their operating system because I'm used to it, but I no longer talk nicely about them and I no longer buy anything from them if I don't have to. Glad that my next Apple computer will be a compatible box.

How were you ripped off ? Did Apple break into your bank account or steal your wallet ? Don't get the iPhone or jailbreak if you don't like the terms.

Hi, Apple arranged a revenue sharing agreement with T-mobile.

Carry on.

Can you imagine how many iphones apple will sell now. Unlocked there is no where the phone cant go, both with a carrier and with a country. Global domination begins.
:apple: Has done exactly what it's customers wanted, and reap the rewards of more sales.

It doesn't seem likely that Apple would launch something like that in a country other than the US. However, it might be good to test it in a smaller market before brining it stateside. Who knows? With so many 3G iPhone rumors going around, I'm just waiting for the official announcement.

Italy has the most competitive mobile phone market in Europe and the most modern infrastructure. It was unlikely that a locked contraxt version with older technologz could make it in the market. Apple identified a few large and uncompetitive markets where the could experiment: USA, France, UK and Germany. Those are countries where mobile services are overpriced and carriers can get away doing anything they want with their customers. In Germany they still force two year contracts upon customers! Anyway I am one of the German Telecom victims. So we now know that Apple has been using us as beta testers, making us finance their program with huge monthly fees fow two years. The lucky Italian customers will certainly benefit from our efforts. Nice to know that our suffering will at least bring happyness to someone else. And Telecom Italia is probably the best mobile company in Europe with uncomparable serrvice.

Don't lump the US into the uncompetitive category. The US market is so competitive that AT&T ate the iphone tax themselves. AT&T's iphone plan is a regular price voice plan bundled with a regular data plan --- and charge no extra money.

Yeah, Apple's plans for the iPhone are getting ridiculously complex and impossible to figure out, especially in the absence of any clear communication from the company itself.

Yet another case of how the "old Apple" policy of total secrecy and having no road-maps for consumers or partners works against the "new Apple's" hopes to conquer the world.

Let's hope that the unlocked 3G iPhone is available world-wide so we can finally get some stability as well as some idea of whether there is an iPhone in our future. (I am speaking of the majority of the world that doesn't actually have the iPhone yet, here)

For instance in Canada, (as well as in China), the only reason we don't have an iPhone is that the carriers wanting to make more money off of the consumers than Apple sees as fair, and their reluctance to share the profits they will make with Apple. This will not change no matter what new models of iPhone Apple comes out with, it will only change if Apple is willing to sell an unlocked iPhone so the carriers can compete with each other, which will inevitably lead to lower prices for the consumer.

I don't know, between the following I am going to go with the assumption that iPhone 3G is coming out prior to WWDC.

1. This article
2. WWDC is software focused
3. Still think the colorwarepc.com showing special edition iPhone on 4/28 means something.
4. Other people are reporting that iPhone is now shipping towards middle of May (May 12th), not the 5-7 business days as reported on Apple's website in US. Another poster said that Apple updated shipping date from 4/21 to 5/12.

I too would like to know how you were ripped off? And, was it Apple or German Telecom doing the ripping? You make it sound like German Telecom.
