The 13-inch Macbook pro really needs an update because the hard drive in entry model is now smaller than the plastic one.

Are you sure ;) Apple might address it. I imagine video card upgrades are in order.

I recently got a MacBook Pro.
Does this mean I should return it and wait for an upgrade?
Do you need it?
Do you need something until January, possibly February?
What's wrong with your current machine?

MBP update would make sense

Usually Apple updates MBP in 1-2 months after MB update. In addition, current MB and the cheap MBP 13" share the same processor, amount of RAM and MB has even larger HDD. This does not make sense in the usual Apple point of view and, more logically, provides greater pressure on highly successful cheaper MBP 13".

On the other hand, Intel has not yet introduced their new processor lines and are not likely to do so until early 2010. There were rumors of Intel making pre-production (or early release) CPUs for Apple needs, but I am very critical about that... I think, we will get updated MBPs in January-February only. Christmas sales will be a good way to clear current MBP stocks. However, I would not be too optimistic about i5/i7 in MBPs. I think, that only the highest spec models (MBP 17?) will have i5/i7.

NVidia seems to be having financial problems (they are currently developing just low end dedicated desktop GPUs) and licensing problems with Intel. I don't think, that Apple would go with Intel. No matter what Intel claims, their chip will be definitely slower than the 9400 and will probably have problems running advanced features of Snow Leopard or Photoshop CS4. However, there is always ATI. They have recently produced 4330 chip, which does essentially the same as the 9400m, but ~15-20% faster. By the way, this chip is used in HP Envy 13- a MBP 13 look a like (although slightly more expensive, Envy 13 has better specs than the MBP. This might speed up MBP update). It would be sensible to use it in the future MBP line... After all, 9400 was introduced about a year ago, or, speaking in computer years, in the Dark ages.

The time will tell, but I think, that MBP 6.x will be introduced in early 2010 with updated graphic chips, likely from ATI. Although, I hope they will come earlier... At least before my HP Pavilion dies :)

P.S. This summer I nearly got myself MBP 13. But I decided to wait. I hope, it was the right choice.

Cool I suppose...

However the deal i got on my 13" mbp this june was too good to pass up...HE discount with ipod rebate etc....

So if apple release new mbp's soon...I doubt I'll be that pissed.

A few months more and there will be a Macbook Pro 7,1. Then probably an 8,1.
Have I divulged some unknown news?
Is there a soul here who thought there would not be a Macbook Pro 6,1 and 6,2 within the next three or four months?

What qualifies as a rumor these days? That Christmas will follow Thanksgiving this year?

Geez, I bought my '08 Macbook Pro 15-inch in late October '08 (right when it was replaced with the new UB models) - it felt new then, even though it was around 6 months old, and I'm already 2 revisions behind with another one just around the corner.

And I just bumped up the RAM to 4gb in June.

I have to admit though, aside from maybe wanting to upgrade the GPU (which I don't really require anyway), I really don't see an upgrade necessary at this point. I love my Mac. I might even wait for a couple of more revisions before even considering an upgrade.

So bring on the new MBPs! Won't break my Mac, that's for sure!

Very true. I'm finding machines have gotten fast enough that you really don't need to upgrade as often. I used to upgrade in PowerPC days almost every revision trying to get a bit more power, but the current intel Machines really run nicely.

99.5 % not. You might have to wait a long time for an upgrade and you are highly unlikely to get anything more decent than bump in CPU speed and upgraded GPU (25% faster at the most). The RAM and HDD will definitely be upgraded, but for re-stocking fees (~$100) you can upgrade yours to 4gb and 500 gb.

Do you guys think USB 3 is going to accompany whatever update there is in the Jan 2010 window?

I believe DailyTech.com ran an article recently stating that Intel was postponing support for USB 3.0 (at the chipset level?) until 2011 sometime.

desk

Pretty hard to drag a desktop around.

That's funny to me because when I was in school, I had a class with this bozo who just bought a MacPro, and he did one of his presentations in Keynote... In he came dragging that beast with all his might. What a tool.

Anyway, I think the bigger news here is that Arn posted an update on a Sunday!

genius.

If they manage to squeeze an i5 or i7 into a macbook pro chassis, it begs the question, why not the 21" imac?

But to be honest i feel the core duos still in use in the imac range are going to be phased out within a quarter.

Hopefully LightPeak will be added. though I seriously don't think it will happen. I don't think USB 3 will be added for at least another full year.

Dude, there will be an Infiniband port on the MacBook Pros before there will be "LightPeak". Considering that there are exactly zero peripherals or devices on the market today that support "LightPeak". Is it even finished? I doubt it.
