Who Needs Power

just wondering... whom actually needs i5/i7 on a "notebook"?!
Who needs really powerful machines, well, get a desktop or something similar!

3D CAD, finite element flow and stress analysis, CAD/CAM and such require a fast machine, and I hate to lug around more than one laptop (forget a desktop).

Some of those analysis programs can take 15-20 minutes to run a simulation on something relatively complex.

Right, this is brilliant... I just ordered a 17" which will be delivered in three weeks. That gives me just enough time to offload it on some idiot who doesn't read MR before the new models get released.

Please give me enough time!

So wait, does this mean its getting pushed back the 10.6.2 upgrade for iMacs and Magic Mouse for MacBook Pro or we still should expect a update sometime this week? I kind of am losing my patience just saying.

Ya...

Blah... they are only doing this because I just ordered a new Macbook Pro.

Honestly... I'm not sure how soon this is going to happen. I'm figuring that i7 Macbooks are still 6 Months off.

Are we sure about this?

The iMac uses the desktop version of the core i5 and i7, the laptop CPU's are totally different when it comes to power usage and cooling.
I keep hearing this being said, that is desktop processors in the iMacs. But has anybody actually seen hard evidence of such? They processors could very well be Lynnfields. A quick look a few days ago on Apples sight didn't clear it up for me. Just a thought.
I'm hoping for core i7, somehow I doubt Apple will offer these and will instead stick to Arrandale which are not released until net year, if the do offer Clarksfield then I'll be buying one.
Apple wouldn't use Clarksfield as that is a desktop chip. I'd love to see Arrandale before 2010. To get one of these machines I'd have to sell my MBP this year. Maybe the update will be worth the hit. I just don't want a transitional machine which is likely what we will get if the machine comes this year.

Could be. Those file references could simply be there because they don't expect to do 10.6.3 before february.
I'm really conflicted on this. I got such a great deal on my 17" I could actually sell it with profit, but there's no way I would get a similar deal on the new ones, so I would lose out on the deal in toto :(

Edit: NO, clarksfield is the movile. Clarksdale is desktop.

Expect Apple to update their current MBP line very soon because the 13" Macbook Pro is creating a huge imbalance with the Macbook.

But I think these updates (speed bumps) would be relatively minor and not warrant a new terminology. 6,1 6,2? Expect them sometime next year I guess. Unless Apple has something very deadly under it''s sleeve to be released before the Q4 holidays.

However I wouldn't hold my breath until the i5/i7 processors are released which mostly will be out mid-2010.

As for USB 3.0 and Bluray, expect them much later. Definitely not this year. If they were coming this year, Apple would have stuck them on the 27" iMac atleast.

Anyways, this solves a huge dilemma for me. I almost ordered the 17" MBP last Tuesday but decided to wait until they update the MBP line too.

It seems obvious to me that Apple could have already implied that a Mac product would be released close to the holiday season and NOT an iTablet. During its conference call it said holiday shipping costs would be higher due to air freight of a product and not the iTablet.

I can definitely see a MBP and maybe MBA update with Arrandale ahead of schedule. Apple has done that before, and the conference call info makes this new MBP update rumor make a lot of sense. All Apple needs is the chips a few weeks ahead of the Jan 5 release schedule to make this a reality. I think Apple will actually introduce BluRay in its MBPs first, so this could be it to capitalize on holiday sales.

It doesn't mean anything. They are just adding support files for some future models. It doesn't predict anything.

If they release a new model this year I'm likely never buying a Mac again. Yearly updates I can tolerate. Changing after only 6 months smacks of the iPhone "let's drop the price $200 a few months after" debacle. I'll go with a different brand.

I've used pro apps on a mac mini 2006 model.

No offense, but "photo illustration, brochure design", etc aren't really "pro" activities. When people think "pro" they think 3D rendering, broadcast television, etc. Not coming up with the dinner menu for some local restaurant. There's a reason you're still running on a Mac Mini.

What people think and what is are different things.

how are they not pro activites? people get paid to design these various things making them "graphics professionals." your comment reeks or arrogance or ignorance, or both.

Are you buying a new mac every year? Why do you care if Apple switch to bi-yearly updates? It doesn't really hurt anybody and it doesn't make your current model obsolete. Dude, Apple is usually the slowest to update their computers, and you are switching to a different brand because Apple is starting to catch up to the PC world? LMAO, you're funny. Good luck with the other brand, I can assure you, they'll be updating much much more often than Apple.

Not pro level activities at all (though they are a reputable source of income that requires a professional attitude), but in defense of the other guy/gal, I didn't read the poster saying anything about doing pro level work. Just said that pro apps were running on a mac mini.

Competitive???

It does seem like they just released the unibodies, and already they have taken away the battery cover and added an SD slot. I guess they have to be more competitive now since Microsoft is finally becoming semi-competent. Apple can't sit on their asses anymore.

Card slots on Windows laptops are very common. Most of them will take care of more than one card type. pcExpress card slot is now only available in the 17". The Mac laptops are falling farther behind the Windows units in more places all of the time. On the presence of FW800 keeps them ahead in one fashion.

I'd like to see the Mac laptops become more competitive again. But so far that is only wishful thinking.
