OK, then select the iTunes Store in the left pane and log in to your Apple ID, wait for the store to load and then switch back to your device in the left pane.

The timeout was iTunes trying to log into the iTunes Store without your ID information. Now you should be past that issue.

So you Apple ID is now listed in the top black bar when you select the iTunes Store in the left pane?

Also, I see two iPhones listed under your Device list in iTunes, you should not have but one connected when attempting activation. The original iPhone should be the only one listed and it should be "iPhone".

Ok i tried plugging this bad boy up to another comp i have, blank screen, im beginning to think its the iphone.

I went to AT&T and said they wont activate it at their store I had to do it using itunes at home or go to an Apple store.
So Im hitting a local Apple store later.
I tried 3 different computers, new sims and nothing.
Seems like mission imposible...

Well that's the reason to use iTunes and the automated process and not call Customer Care. :D

Dave

Don't you have to call them and give IMEI of new phone after activating the 2g to convert the data plan to 3g data plan?

The system will detect the new iphone and will automaticly upgrade you to the $30 unlimited 3G data plan and send you a text.
But the very freakin hard part is getting to activate the original iphone with the $20 data plan.

For both of you , I would suggest that you start over and restore the original iPhone again with a firmware version 3.1.3. You can find a link for it here http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

3.1.3 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw

Note: Just make sure that if you want to do a software unlock or jailbreak that it is compatible with firmware 3.1.3 before you restore.

No you don't want to call. As Applejuiced indicated, you want the system to detect that you are using a device that is not compatible with the original iPhone Unlimited Data plan.

However, before you do any device switching you need to verify that you have the correct original iPhone Data Plan while using the originial iPhone!

Please log in to your AT&T online account (OLAM) and verifty that you have the $20 data plan with the 200 SMS Txt message plan or one of the other valid choices that you selected during the iTunes activation step.

Everybody DAVE for MVP of this thread. Lets hear it. Seriously, thanks for looking out.

Do you really need to go thru the new sim and itune route, can you just put the micro sim in a sim adaptor and insert it in a dumb phone, call AT&T to remove the data pro 2gb plan feature, insert the sim to an already activited iphone2g, log in olam and select the $20 unlimited plan.

so update from last night

Like I said, the last screen(activation) kept freezing and timing out. It would constantly tell me to unplug and plug it back in and it would still time out. Eventually I'd get no errors and the screen would show up blank. I've tried and used an unactivated sim and a used sim, restoring, re-installing itunes, rebooting. Nothing would activate my phone rendering it useless. So i decided to call up ATT and basically tell them that I had already activated my iphone 2g(which was obvs a lie) and that for some reason the data plan still read 2GB instead of the unlimited 2g I chose when activating it. She told me that she'd be glad to assist me, she put me on hold, got her manager and BOOM, the plan was added. I thanked her and got off the line. Then i put the sim in my iphone 4s and called up again and told them i upgraded and needed to convert the 2g unlimited to the 4s unlimited. Again, they told me theyd be glad to assist me and within 2 min they were done.

I usually dont condone lying, but it worked. :p

I hope that helps anyone.

Interesting. So the system by default change the unlimited 2g to unlimited 3g ? I am curious as to why does the system change to unlimited 3g plan instead of 2gb or 4gb plan since unlimited 3g isn't offered anymore.

Because we wouldn't be doing any of this if that was the case. They declared they were grandfathering anyone who has an existing unlimited data plan. If they automatically switched you to a limited plan, problems would arise, associates would die, etc.

Glad it worked out for you.
For me they wouldnt add the the $20 data plan at all.
They told me to go to Apple, get it activated again and give me the run around. Over a dozen different calls and other bs. You just gotta get lucky and get the right rep that's willing to do it instead of brushing you off to get rid of you I guess.
So back to Apple I went to get the original iphone activated.
They couldnt get it to activate either.
Then the Genius went in the back and found out that it wont activate with those new AT&T 3G enabled sims. I can only do it with an unactivated old 2G only sim. Good luck try to get one of those those.

That doesn't seem right, I know for a fact my original iPhone came with a 64k sim card. Hmmm.....

This is incorrect information!

There is no magic old 2G Mini-SIMs. Any valid unactivated AT&T Mini-SIM that starts with 89 as the first to number of the ICCID will work just fine for activation in an original iPhone.

This is a version of the old original iPhone activation story about how you need a special iPhone Mini-SIM that had the white Mini-SIM with the Orange Fireball 3G logo. Again, it is not true! It sounds like they just provided you old bad information. The crazy part is the original iPhone story was and is that it is not capable of 3G, it is an EDGE only device.

It is no different than calling AT&T Customer Care as Cmjkxa posted above. It a a roll of the dice if the rep has a clue about how to activate an original iPhone or add the original iPhone Unlimited Data plan.

Again, here is the feature code that needs to be added to your account in addition to providing the AT&T Care rep with the IMEI of the original iPhone.

iPhone Data Plan + 200 Text - MMV1 ( SOC - original iPhone data plan )

I would suggest that if you want the Unlimited Data plan loophole that you keep trying. Why not go back to Apple have them call AT&T and together they should be able to complete the activation steps using iTunes or manually.

I've been trying to get a free SIM card to try this on my main line and has been unsuccessful. They are always trying to charge me $25 for a new card. How are you guys getting these new inactive cards for free from them? Also, are there any alternatives that I can buy from Amazon or the likes?

Sure, you can pick them up on eBay for about a $1.00. A combined Mini-SIM / Micro-SIM would set you back about $5.95

You can also buy one from AT&T for $5.95 online with free shipping or the iPad version for $15 that also works in any iPhone or other AT&T device.

Thank you Dave!

$6 bucks with free shipping is cheaper when compared to gas prices...lol

Hey, Wow my timing sucks. I just went to the local store and new orleans and Got a new sim unactivated no problems, i would have just gone to the radioshack i used to run and grabbed two and mailed you one. However, if you can't get one at your store after trying again, you're right you can't beat 5 bucks, except maybe no bucks. Insert beggars and choosers comment here.
