Thanks for the info Dave and the rest.
Seems like Im getting more of the runaround and more uneducated customer service reps.
I will just hactivate the iphone 2G, stick the sim in and call AT&T and hope they add the $20 data plan on it.
About getting free sims I just walked into an AT&T store and told them Im activating an original iphone at home and need a brand new inactive sim so I can add a line to my account by using itunes.
They gave me one no problem.

Good luck. I personally just would keep either escalating it or just saying i demand to speak with another associate. Its still luck of the draw but id rather get it over with than keep calling over and over. I now have all the equipment I need, just trying to decide if i should switch it to a dumb phone first and remove the data plan before doing the iTunes activation with the original iPhone.

If you demand to speak to someone, and keep supplying them with the feature code that needs to be added, the one dave supplied a few threads above. I would simply say Sir or mam I appreciate that you may not know how to add this feature code for me, if thats the case please help me find someone who does know how. If they try spitting out facts that we know aren't true, like crap about how you can't have unlimited data on the original iPhone, say i know that is not the case i respectfully disagree, please find me someone else to speak with. Again, just my opinion.

I will try that next.
Or sometimes when they're not willing to help or too thick headed its better to hang up and talk to someone else.
I'll see how it goes.

Hey, Wow my timing sucks. I just went to the local store and new orleans and Got a new sim unactivated no problems, i would have just gone to the radioshack i used to run and grabbed two and mailed you one. However, if you can't get one at your store after trying again, you're right you can't beat 5 bucks, except maybe no bucks. Insert beggars and choosers comment here.

Lol, lucky!

Side question to all. I just opened a new account last week. Wouldn't it send a red flag when the rep sees that my account was created after the whole grandfathered end date?

For those having trouble getting a sim card for free, try going to an AT&T Corporate store, not the franchise ones.

Yea, that's the main reason to use the automated iTunes process, less prying eyes...

However, your interaction with a Care rep is a roll of the dice as you have seen here in this thread. Some have no clue, some really want to help but don't have the option on their screen and need a manager to override the feature addtion. The real winners are like Cmjkxa, that get a rep that makes it happen. :D

I wouldn't worry the least bit about it, I would say if possible going through iTunes and not having to speak to anyone is ideal, but there isn't anything illegal etc. about what we are doing. I am in the same boat, just started a new account 2 weeks ago. I told the girl at ATT when she was checking me out that i planned to do it actually, and she said she's hear of it happening but didn't want to guarantee me that it still worked. The grandfather clause Technically doesn't mean that you had to have it the way your looking at it, simply it states that the unlimited plan is no longer offered, but anyone who has the unlimited data is allowed to keep it. What we are doing is trying to get to where we have it, and then we can keep it. LOL this might be the worst explanation I've ever given. Also, sure it may peak someones interest if thats what you mean, but when it comes down to it they don't ever pry into details and its not like they can just put you on the naughty list or something.
I can't decide whether to remove my data plan first or just do the whole thing by the directions. Whatd'ya say y'all?

Thanks guys. I'll update everyone further when I get somewhere with my current activation. Got the e-mail yesterday stating that the activation of the 2G is being processed, that was at around 11PM PST. I know it's the weekend and ATT OLAM is currently down but given my situation how long should I wait before I call ATT?

I would say go ahead and do it tomorrow, I mean you can wait till monday at the latest in my view. Especially if you are going to wind up having to make multiple calls, might as well get started.

I got plenty of those emails too and the iphone 2G never activated.
Im about to throw in the towel and go for plan B soon.

3-4 days and nothing.
It shouldn't take longer than 3-4 minutes or a half hour the most.

Ah thanks.

Question to all, what is the ATT 2g $20 unlimited data plan called? I remember seeing the actual ATT part code here. I tried sorting through the thread but was unable to find it.

This is incorrect information!

There is no magic old 2G Mini-SIMs. Any valid unactivated AT&T Mini-SIM that starts with 89 as the first to number of the ICCID will work just fine for activation in an original iPhone.

This is a version of the old original iPhone activation story about how you need a special iPhone Mini-SIM that had the white Mini-SIM with the Orange Fireball 3G logo. Again, it is not true! It sounds like they just provided you old bad information. The crazy part is the original iPhone story was and is that it is not capable of 3G, it is an EDGE only device.

It is no different than calling AT&T Customer Care as Cmjkxa posted above. It a a roll of the dice if the rep has a clue about how to activate an original iPhone or add the original iPhone Unlimited Data plan.

Again, here is the feature code that needs to be added to your account in addition to providing the AT&T Care rep with the IMEI of the original iPhone.

iPhone Data Plan + 200 Text - MMV1 ( SOC - original iPhone data plan )

I would suggest that if you want the Unlimited Data plan loophole that you keep trying. Why not go back to Apple have them call AT&T and together they should be able to complete the activation steps using iTunes or manually.

You are the man! Let me know how your venture turns out. I'll update you on mine when I have made some progress.

Yea but the saints are losing at halftime, how does that work? Oh and lots of good information about iPhones and unlimited data plans,as to remain in compliance.

There is another thread here today where there are reports that the Activation servers are currently down this afternoon.

Thanks Dave. You are all knowing, all encompassing I swear. I knew something was going on, figured it was just system maintenance when i saw that last night the attwireless.com site was down, and then earlier today it changed from the normal we are improving your experience message to one that said please revisit the site after 5pm on sunday the 30th. This echoes the experience of the OP on the other thread you linked. Glad to know its not just my region or something.

Wait so it's a server issue?
All of us waiting for 5-6 days for the 2G to activate will somehow get done or will need to redo the whole thing again?

Ideally, all requests would queue up and be processed in that order. But Ideally this wouldn't happen in the first place. I'd say once again when it comes down to it really nothing has changed because its still a luck of the draw type of deal. BTW and off note, I want Demi-God under my Handle Applejuiced....Id settle for Demi Moore under me too though. ;)

Dude, call AT&T/611.

I got fed up with waiting after 30 minutes. I was lucky to get a helpful CSR on the first try. I told her I was getting the "activation requires additional time" on iTunes so she asked for me IMEI and SIM card number. I gave her the IMEI and as I was shuffling to find my SIM card number, she asked me what data plan I wanted. I asked what was available and she tells me that I currently have the $15 200mb plan but the unlimited $20 is available so I say err sure I'll take the unlimited. Because the unlimited plan is discontinued, she had to get her manager to add the unlimited plan to my account, which took about 5 minutes of waiting. I heard AT&T was cracking down on people taking advantage of the 2G unlimited hack but if the manager is willing to add it for me with no questions asked, it's obviously still in their agenda to allow users to add the plan.

I was nervous to call them and get caught taking advantage of the system since I had an iPhone 4 perviously and a 200mb data plan but there's nothing to worry about. If your CSR knows what their doing, then they will activate your phone and add a data plan of your choice.

Wao, I'm still waiting in the mail for my iphone 2G..should arrive by 2nd. November and I guess I'm looking into a lot of red tape.
