There isn't a Windows version available yet? It's really hard to find any news about the beta program, so this thread is pretty much all I follow.

I'll have to bookmark the Beta Testing Blog.

I used a LIVE OSX DVD to do it :p.

EDIT: i'd rather just post here than make a new thread. is there any application compatibility list for cydia? i can't seem to find any. the only one out there was a spreadsheet made by the dev team but it seems to be gone now.

Upgraded to 4.2.1 and then used redsn0w to jailbreak. I was then going to upgrade to beta 6 but I guess I cant because tinyumbrella doesnt find 4.2b3 shsh. Am I screwed now? I found the IPSW for it but im guessing Apple isnt signing it anymore because it wont let me restore to it. Since I have SHSH on file for 4.1 can I roll back to that and then upgrade to it using that IPSW or am I stuck until greenp0ison comes out?

You're stuck with either untethered on 4.1 or tethered on 4.2.1
Since you dont have 4.2beta3 blobs you wont be able to use the untethered JB for 4.2.1
Either hope for greenpoison or wait for the 4.3 JB.

What do you mean the wrong system?
You can use any computer to upgrade to 4.2.1
In order to maintain your baseband you need TU running in the back or your hosts pointed to cydia.

Sorry but you are mistaken with that method BUT with the iPhone 4.

If you have an iPhone 4 on 4.1 with baseband 1.59.00, you simply option/shift click upgrade, point to 4.2.1, let iTunes go through the motion, then when you get Error (1013) and it's in recovery mode, use tiny umbrella to kick it out and BAM done. on 4.2.1 with 1.59.00 baseband.

On a side note, I have completed all the previous steps and I can confirm they do work. I have an iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 with baseband 1.59.00 untethered.

The only problem was pointing redsn0w to 4.2b3. Both times you have to say your current firmware is 4.2.1 then when you do Monte (untethered) THAT'S where you point it to the 4.2b3 firmware.

Got it. I just updated and kept my baseband, now I will try and jailbreak. Thanks for your help.

Also, I wonder if you can go from 4.0.1 to 4.2.1, since I'm downgrading first to see if my proximity sensor issues go away (started with 4.1.).

OK so update from me:

I was on 4.1 with terrible proximity sensor issues. I had no problems at 4.0 and 4.0.1.

Anyway, I used Tiny Umbrella and downgraded to 4.0.1, and my proximity issues went away. I then upgraded using Tiny Umbrella to 4.1 again, and my proximity sensor issues were immediately back in full swing. :(

I've now upgraded to 4.2.1 and maintained the 01.59.00 baseband, and my proximity sensor issues are still gone, so let's hope it stays that way!

4.2.1 with 01.59.00 untethered. :)

Congrats to you sir!

Welcome to the club. I am glad everything finally worked out for you.

Thank you sir.

It's just idiotic that the iPhone 4 is such a terrible phone, till now..

At 4.0 and 4.0.1, Bluetooth was broken, people complaining I sounded like I was under water etc. No problems with the proximity sensor, though...

And then 4.1 broke the proximity sensor for me (and fixed it for other people, of course), so I literally gave up holding the phone to my ear.

Hopefully 4.2.1 is the end of all the issues. We'll see...

I ve read most of the thread but some things aren't clear here.

At the moment i have iOS 4.1 jb with limorain untethered.

I ve saved 4.1.shsh and 4.2b3.shsh and 4.2.1.shsh with TU

I m not a developper nor do i have an dev account.

Can i install 4.2.1 and jailbreak my iphone after untethered? The Dev blog isn t very clear and not easy to understand.

If it s possible where are the different steps listed to fallow

Thank you

No, the current beta jb requires the 4.2b3 ipsw which the fourth paragraph on the dev-team blog Here clearly states.

"Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes. Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW! (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)"

how has battery life been for you guys? i want to move to 4.2.1, but the comments on the dev blog scares me, alot of users are complaining about horrible battery life.

WHY do you want to move to 4.2.1? This, and the Skype and iBooks issues, are why they are doing a beta. If you can't live with issues like this, don't participate. I don't see any benefits to installing 4.2.1 on my iPhone4 so I am staying at 4.1, keeping my jb, and all my software working.

You should have been following the dev team blog here. Skype and iBooks are still problems.

I did read. I read the Skype/BT issues were supposedly fixed in beta 6.

I was going to smash my iPhone 4 if I didn't upgrade to 4.2.1 because of my proximity sensor issues.

The only thing not working for me is Skype and I wouldn't have known that if I didn't install it to try it. I don't use Skype so that's fine with me. Bluetooth and iBooks are working for me so I am happy. I wanted to update to 4.2.1 to give my iPhone a little jailbreak refresh and clear out any unwanted files that were left behind.

Once 4.3 is out with an untethered jailbreak AND official carrier unlock, I'm going to restore my iPhone as brand new and officially start over. I like getting a clean restore. So far I am happy with my phone and everything is running great.

Ok apparently there is a fix to get Skype working. It's rather annoying. Anyways you have to have Skype installed on your iPhone first before doing the jailbreak.

This is a person's response:

Did you install Skype before you jb? It has to be done before running beta 6 or it won't be fixed! You might be able to just run beta 6 again without a restore. If that doesn't work you'll wanna restore to fresh 4.2.1 add skype then jb. Don't forget to reboot your mac first! Good luck.

Answer:

Thank you. It worked! Now just waiting for SBSettings to work properly.

But SBSettings apparently works. Now I dont know about rejailbreaking because I don't know if it's going to mess with my baseband but I'll let others try it out lol. I dont care about Skype because I don't use it. So if you want to try William to rejailbreak, please let us know if your baseband is still kept at 1.59.00 and you're still able to be untethered on 4.2.1.

Thank you for this!

Definitely nervous to re-jailbreak over the jailbreak and risk losing 01.59.00!

Anyone confirmed this works without updating baseband?

I use Skype a lot, so I'm right now restoring to 4.1 using Tiny Umbrella, and then I'll update to 4.2.1, install Skype first, and then jailbreak again.

Will report back soon...
