When I have time I'll try this but is this the basic guide for Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 with baseband 1.59.00

1) Start TinyUmbrella and have the tss server running
2) "UPDATE" to 4.2.1 from 4.1
3) Have TinyUmbrella kick out of recovery mode
4) Now the iPhone 4 will be on 4.2.1 with baseband 1.59.00

5) Download RedSn0w beta 7 and have it point to the 4.2b3 ispw
6) Get into recovery mode
7) Point to 4.2.1 ipsw
8) let it restart
9) DONE - iPhone 4 untethered jailbreak on 4.2.1 with baseband 1.59.00

Is that the correct guide? I can't seem to find a concrete guide on the forums.

I have a friend who is a dev, so I can easily get 4.2beta3, but he knows nothing of jailbreaking. Hopefully some of you can help answer my questions...

I have an iPhone 4 on 4.2.1, so wouldn't 4.2b3 be a downgrade? I thought you couldn't downgrade iOS? Is the point of 4.2b3 to install just to grab SHSH blobs and then switch to a custom 4.2.1 IPSW that is broken?

Lastly, if I don't plan to unlock, is there any reason to worry about baseband?

Oh, how I miss jailbreakme.com! Thanks.

For the most part, no. But, if you can, I'd say preserve your baseband as best you can. Whenever it comes time for you to sell it, if you have an unlockable phone then it'll be more valuable than one that isn't. If resale value isn't a concern for you then it really doesn't matter.

Someone posted a simple guide they did and i will try it out later tonight to let you guys know if it works:

Ok, full detailed account of the Monte untether process:
(First, for the record, I am listed as a developer with Apple).
Im using an iphone 4, preserved baseband, upgrading from 4.1 to 4.2.1, relying on the unlock.
Using a macbook pro with snow leopard 10.6.6

The update from 4.1 to 4.2.1 went smoothly. simply held option + Update, selected the stock 4.2.1 ipsw,
and clicked update. Took it less than 2 minutes, and I was on 4.2.1 still with preserved baseband.
Used Redsn0w to jailbreak, using the 4.2.1 ipsw (after installing skype first, to make sure it worked), then
entered redsn0w again, this time selecting the untether option, using the 4.2b3 ipsw.
Here is where I encountered my only problem.
When arriving to the "sending jailbreak files to monte" section, with the jailbreak progress bar on the iphone
at about 3/4 of the way full (building filesystem, I believe), it would get stuck there, and I was forced to restore.
Did it about 6-7 times, each time reverting back to 4.0.1, back to 4.2.1 and jailbreaking.
I finally figured it out, the culprit was wifi sync.
once I uninstalled wifi sync from my mac, the untether went smooth and I am now rocking 4.2.1 untethered.

So far: No crashes, no problems whatsoever.
iBooks works perfectly.
Skype works perfectly fine, and facetime activation with mitime was a piece of cake.
Extended battery life and smoother performance overall.

Great Job guys!

Need more info on this. It's definitely not as simple as just upgrading from 4.1 to 4.2.1, since you'll lose the baseband unlock unless you've run Tiny Umbrella in the past..

I want to know if anyone has done this with an iPhone 4 and kept the 1.59.00 baseband.

There is a thread a little while back that if you "update" your phone from 4.1 on Baseband 1.59.00 to 4.2.1, you get an error in iTunes but if you just restart your phone, you'll be on 4.2.1 with 1.59.00 baseband. This only works with the iPhone 4 AND you have to update not restore.

Has anyone been able to keep 1.59 baseband and have an untethered jailbreak on 4.2.1 with an iPhone 4?

I did.

Ok, I'll be honest, I've never used redsn0w before but basically you updated to 4.2.1, have your phone plugged into mac, startup redsn0w and jailbreak (click the box) then startup redsn0w again and click jailbreak monte? When do you point redsn0w to the different ipsw's and why is it important to have 4.2b3 blob saved if your not using Tiny umbrella to run the TSS server?

No it's not that simple. Not anyone at 4.1 can upgrade to 4.2.1 and preserve the baseband. I replied in that thread, and can guarantee this to be true.

That's funny because I just did it.

Don't say something 'doesn't work' just because you don't know what you're doing.

So you had 1.59.00 baseband and you UPGRADED to 4.2.1 NOT restored to correct? You're the first person to have not gotten it to work as of yet.

Gaaaah you people are misunderstanding. I KNOW it's possible to upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1 with the baseband intact, but that ONLY works if you have used Tiny Umbrella in the past, or have your hosts not pointing to Apple.

Well yeah...you can't be on 4.1 with 1.59.00 baseband without using Tiny umbrella... and no you dont have to be running Tiny Umbrella while updating to 4.2.1 as stated in post 114.

I never said Tiny Umbrella had to be running.

And again, you can't just saying upgrade to 4.2.1, and you'll be fine. I really don't remember which computer I used to upgrade to 4.1 in the first place while preserving 01.59.00, and it would be catastrophic (at this time anyway) for me to use the "wrong" system to upgrade to 4.2.1.

What do you mean the wrong system?
You can use any computer to upgrade to 4.2.1
In order to maintain your baseband you need TU running in the back or your hosts pointed to cydia.
