I want to preserve my baseband (02.10.04), even though I know there is no unlock for it yet and that a future unlock is probably for newer basebands also. Just in case.

However, when using redsn0w, my baseband isn't preserved, is it? Then how do I jailbreak 4.3.1 with baseband preservation?

You need to build a custom IPSW with PwnageTool. Be advised that on the older baseband your signal strength will always show as 1 bar, even though you may be getting a stronger signal. MuscleNerd says an update via a cydia package will be released soon to fix this.

While I don't particularly care about that, he says that's for unlockable basebands, and unfortunately 02.10.04 isn't one of them. Thanks for the info though, I'll see whether or not I get one bar.

edit: PwnageTool is doing what it's good at. For my better understanding: IPSW's from Apple include the iPhone firmware + baseband firmare, but when creating a custom IPSW, PwnageTool only spits out a (modified) IPSW, no baseband firmware (which means it stays at what it's at). Is this correct? If not, how does PwnageTool know what baseband to use, as it didn't look like it accessed the phone to see what baseband it's currently at...
