Don't spend $230 to get a replacement if you are going to sell it. Put it on Swappa a couple weeks before Sept announcement of iPhone 7 if you can. This is what I usually do, but I have a backup 3GS that I can BARELY manage to make it with.

Did a quick search on buffing out aluminum scratches and came up with this product:

http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-G10307-ScratchX-2-0-oz/dp/B0002UNON8

Based on information in this older post - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/remove-scratches-from-aluminium-unibody-macbook.657515/page-2

Best of luck.

Would you replace your car if it had a scratch or a dent? Would you buy a new house if a window was broken? You might have worse things to deal with in the future. Better learn to live with it.

All very valid points. I am going to put a case on it and let it go. Very appreciative of everyone's thoughts and contributions on this.

Would you say screw it and go naked now that it has a blemish?

I'd go this route because I don't use a case. It's a phone and I don't care about scratches and nicks. I mean, as long as the screen and lens are fine and it functions, then it can perform all of the tasks it was designed to perform.

Would you just put a case on it and forget about it?

You could go this route if you were going to put a case on it anyway.

I'm so glad I'm not like that anymore.

Nothing against you OP, but I'm glad I've grown out of that mentality. I used to be so OCD about my phone that I was consistently thinking about how to keep it safe. It consumed me.

Now? Hah! Been naked since day one on my 6+. It's got scratches and some scrapes. I could care less! I enjoy using it and come this's September I'll be getting a new 7! It feels great not having to monitor my phone 24/7 so that it doesn't get a scratch. It's a cheap material possession.

The unthinkable? Hardly. It's really no big deal. You were planning to put a case on it, so put a case on it and forget about it.

Are you really considering paying a third of the value of a new iPhone to fix a nick? I must be missing something here....

Glad to see you decided to go this route. Life's too short to fester over stuff like this :)

I know it probably driving you crazy but it's a tiny chip. Buying AppleCare is not for cosmetic replacements. In order to get a replacements you would need a lot more damage than that and you'd have to pay the deductible as well as the price of AppleCare itself. Hardly seems worth it. But the fact remains, If you bought AppleCare and brought that phone in to be replaced they would not replace it as it is now.

Edit: **I guess what I'm saying is, don't be the guy who smashes their phone (on purpose) just to get a pretty replacement because of a tiny chip on the corner. Nobody likes that guy.
It's also insurance fraud.

Although you probably won't go this route, it's worth noting that a blemish that minor will not affect trade-in value at places like Gazelle, through a carrier trade-in program, or even through Apple's own trade in program. I've had iPhones with *much* more cosmetic scrapes and scratches, and still have received full value through those programs. Worse case scenario, you'll have to go through one of those places to sell your device.

I am going to suggest something radical.

Go to your local car shop or body shop and see if they can apply their car putty and paint it by color match and buff/polish it so that it gets similar finish. Only skilled personnel can do it and ask them upfront about charges.

Get it done in front of your eyes and make sure they cover it properly with painter's tape.

Last option would be to decorate it with tiny sticker or from a painter or artist.

Amazing how many choices come down to how something looks rather than how something works. It would bug me too, but at my age I would say screw it, and keep the phone until it dies. At least now you won't have to baby it :)

Not defending anybody but of all things insurance companies I don't feel anything for them. Their whole thing is to avoid to pay out at all costs.
Oh, trust me. I believe insurance is often times a giant Ponzi scheme, which happens to be legalized.

However, there's no getting around the law. Whether someone wants to knowingly break the law is up to them.

I really understand the feeling - trust me, I do. My OCD is pretty bad, but recently I have gotten over cosmetic imperfections with the aluminum parts of my Apple devices. Case or not, it's really only a matter of time - freak accidents like this are pretty common. My 5S came out of the box new with a small scratch and dent in the chamfered edge - but I kept it because everything else was perfect. I say, if you have a perfect screen then deal with it and save yourself the frustration. The screen is now the only thing I worry about cosmetically on my devices, so long as everything else is functional try to let it go.

I really hope this is a joke. If you are serious, I'm not sure where you live but if I brought a phone to a body shop I would be laughed out of town.

At least here in India the bodyshop guys won't laugh you off. I have got similar thing done for my macbook pro. The guy who did it was proud of his work. LMAO!

Sorry to the OP. I always use the phone naked.

Now on to my selfish question to the experts. If the phone was silver, would it have not gotten chipped like this since it doesn't have a coating like the gold and grey ones? I guess, even with gold it probably wouldn't show as much?
