Anyone could post this and say prices

If this is true then i for one will not waste my money on an ipad 3, and i will purchase an ipad 2 again, But anyone could of wrote that so until apple confirm it not true.:D

well hell, now I REALLY don't know if I should just go ahead and get a 2 (now $50 off) or wait for a 3... damn.

Given that the iPad has been such a spectacular failure, Apple would be wise to just drop the product. Or else it could lead to an unmitigated disaster on the future of the company.

Apple should concentrate on the iPhone, which has the potential to be a successful product.

In fact I strongly feel, that the March 7 event, will be an announcement that Apple is dropping the iPad, and introducing the next model of iPhone.

Yeah because selling 15 million a quarter is failure. When all of android sold 12 million....ever.

Being that they'll still sell at a rediculous rate with the price hike, it's still a good product and people will fork the $$$ to get such a product if the rumors are true about the rumored specs.

I'm still happy w/ the iPad 2. My kiddo uses the heck out of the learning apps. She pretty much learned the alphabet and numbers from it. :p

Your initial comment referred to the iPhone going up in spec while staying the same price, and your answer was that it was subsidized.

I gave you examples of where Apple items increased in spec without being subsidized. And no, the iPod touch hasn't changed in price since it was released, with the exception of it going down with the 8GB in 2011.

I could have sworn the iPod increased by at least $30 when they incorporated the camera update....

I can see potential customers justifying a small price increase for a better iPad. Apple may continue to sell the iPad 2 at a reduced price in order to capture those who want but cannot afford iPad 3. So the new entry level may actually be $399, making it even harder on competitors.

I'd be happy to pay a little more if the rumours of Retina Display + LTE + improved camera + A5X/A6 are true.

Oh no :( I've been saving for ages for an iPad 3 (sold my iPad 2 and everything) and I thought I had enough!

Damn it :( Gonna have to find another £80 or so from somewhere...

Wow if things are that tight, you really should reassess your priorities. This is a luxury item. Not a necessity.

You would appreciate it?!? I could understand understanding it, but going as far as to appreciating it? Apple has your brain in a sauce. You need to seek professional help.

Yup Apple has my brain in the sauce. It is consistent with the fact that I explained the reasoning behind how I would appreciate the price rise. But given that your brain is all right and in total sense, you just came up with some kneejerk comment without any reasoning or context.

Well done. Long live your brain.

Really people? If the price goes up, I'm still buying.

I never understand it when people want to believe what they perceive as good things, but not what they think are bad things. In other words, this rumor should be looked at the same as other rumors. Maybe true, maybe not.

Never said I wasn't going to buy. Lol. I'm still buying one no matter what - UNLESS - it's a measly upgrade. I look forward to the announcement.

I'm not saying that this is what will happen.... but you did miss the other side of the argument...

A $x increase in price also means an y% decrease in demand.
So instead of selling 15 million iPad 3 they might only seen 10 million. That will cause your stock to tumble too...

Pricing is a VERY important component of a product and can make or break a product very easily. Apple has historically favoured stable pricing. So I will be very interested in seeing what move they make here.

It's all about whether or not the iPad's demand is elastic or inelastic. If its inelastic, then the increased profit from the price increase will offset the decrease in quantity demanded, thereby improving their profits. On the other hand, if demand is elastic, then they will lose profit as the drop in quantity demanded and lost profit can't be offset by the increase pricing. As for whether Apple's stock will tumble if it's reported they have a higher profit margin but less market share, I'm not qualified to speak on that.

Wow if things are that tight, you really should reassess your priorities. This is a luxury item. Not a necessity.

You never know if things are tight. What's wrong with saving some money for a luxury item. Almost everything now an days is a luxury item considering the costs of stuff. It may not be a necessity for you but everyone else has their own motives for purchases. I say if you worked hard for it and kept putting a little cash away, you diserve it.

This seems to be too big of a price increase. Take a look at the spreadsheet I made. With price bumps as high as 16%, this isn't something that I find very believable.

The only thing that would cause Apple to do this is if they doubled the storage of each model, however this rumor seems to refute that.

I'd believe a non-retina display iPad 3 before I believe a $580 iPad 3. This is a great fake rumor/leak for Apple.

Apple hasn't raised the price on the iPhone this whole time while including significant new technology each and every year. Price didn't raise when they added a front facing camera, retina display, etc.

Don't see any reason why they would start with the iPad.

The iPhone is subsidized by the carrier and yes you are paying more since rates have gone up on the 3 US iPhone carriers. You can buy an official unlocked 16GB iPhone 4s directly from Apple for $650 USD.

I had a feeling the price would increase. Apple would have had total tablet domination in 2012 if they stayed at the $500 mark. Otherwise their leaving the door open for cheaper Android tablets and Apple is making their original iPad customers 2nd guess the need to upgrade. I think everyone can agree that the first and second iPad's are still useful. If anything the price should be cheaper to destroy the competition.
Just look at the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 4S is superior but people still buy the cheaper 3GS because they don't need the extra features. A higher priced iPad 3 will not beat the sales of the iPad 2.

I love this thread. Of course we WILL all afford another 80 bucks when we see that beautiful HD display for the first time...I think the earth may just wobble on it's axis a bit...but really, it's a win-win for Apple.

Up the price - people will feel like the product is even more superior.
Keep the price the same - people will admire, and wonder how they can do it.

Honestly, the only negative will come from people that are buying kindle fire's and other tabs, because they can brag about how they saved even MORE money because they didn't buy an iPad!

Personally, the 3 will be my first iPad, the specs are finally catching up with the price...well, close enough. :)
