Personally, the 3 will be my first iPad, the specs are finally catching up with the price...well, close enough. :)

The 3 was going to my first as well, I may have to shell out the extra cash if it comes to that

I'd be happy to pay a little more if the rumours of Retina Display + LTE + improved camera + A5X/A6 are true.

Same. I almost think $580 is too perfect of a price point. Not too low considering the upgrades, but almost too high to justify ($600 would be too much).

But I'm surprised to see so many people complaining about $80.

This seems to be too big of a price increase. Take a look at the spreadsheet I made. With price bumps as high as 16%, this isn't something that I find very believable.

The only thing that would cause Apple to do this is if they doubled the storage of each model, however this rumor seems to refute that.

I can believe it. I'm surprised that it's not at least $100 over the base model. If the new display resolution bump is true it will cost a lot more to build a proprietary 10 inch display with such a high resolution. The display might be the best looking 10 incher you will ever find but you will pay a premium. Look at computer monitors. The mainstream is 1920x1080. Any higher and your paying a price premium.
But in the end Apple wants to make up for lost profits (LOL). The yield might not be as good as the original panel. More defects equals higher cost. Less revenue on each iPad sold if they keep the $499 price model.

Because Apple' struggling so much in the PC market, right?

See how that works? So far so good for Apple. I'm sure they know more about the likely buyers of their product than you do.

Yeah, cause companies never make mistakes. I am sure RIM also knows more about what the tablet market than the average Apple fanboy on this site, oh wait, no they don't.

Apple shut themselves out of the PC market for about 25+ years with their strategy. Even now as they are doing better their actual marketshare is still a small percentage.

With the iPad, Apple finally has a product that has given them a dominant position and I think a price hike, which will eliminate some buyers, is a bad move that will lower market share. The iPad isn't the only game in town any more and the competitors are increasingly more credible.

The smart play is to keep the price low, or even drop the price, to further solidify the lead and lock people in with the iCloud/iTunes/Appstore ecosystem.

they didn't dominate the portable media player market?

What about the digital music market?

iPad is not the first time Apple has had large market share...

You left out tax. With tax a Ipad 3 16gb wifi only would be about $648.00 here in Washington.

+1 keep the price at the same level at least for next 2 to 3 years, shutdown all the tablet and then you have dominance like MP3 Player market (aka iPod market)

I don't see why the prospect of a $350 or $400 iPad 2 model (maybe 16 GB), a $450 or $500 iPad 2 model (32 GB) and then a $599 start point for iPad 3 is not considered likely. Seems like a great way for Apple to force the copycat competition to battle it out with last year's tech while keeping the high end for itself.

How many ipads fit on a fed ex plane? Seems like you can't bring in enough in a few flights. Seems they would have to be shipped by boat to the US.

You people crack me up! You want Apple to invest their time/money in making a new iPad3, but you expect to pay the same as an iPad2.

"You're ridiculous!" - Judge Judy.

Do you think it is better to pay more each year as new products are released? Would you still prefer if a Blu-Ray player was still $1000?

This doesn't seem logical at all.

The rumors about the iPad 2 surviving surround it being used to compete with the $199 Kindle Fire. Thus, I expect the iPad 2 to start at no more than $399.

The only way those prices are possible is if the guts of the iPad 2 have been upgraded with all of these iPad 3 specs, such as the A6 and improved cameras. But that makes no sense at all to me.

I'm expecting the iPad 3 to have the internal boosts with a retina display starting at $499 for a 16GB model. What would shock me is if the models all doubled their storage from last year. But I think the addition of a retina display is enough of an upgrade to do without a storage bump.

Boats take 2-3 weeks. That's a fortune in inventory carrying charges and given the tight timeframes, there's no way that Apple would do this. A Boeing 747 freighter is pretty darned big. I'm sure it would take a few of them in order to have enough on hand for an American launch but that's how electronics move. TVs might come by boat, but the bulk of electronics arrive via airfreight.

+1

if it remain same, we would be paying for laptop/PC for $5000 like so many years back.

I paid $2500 for ALu 12" PowerBook, I know there are previous generation folks paid more than that for a computer.

Apple please go for a KILL, and finish with other tablets.

Competitors would love to hear!

If any competitor out thinking about price cuts or reduced functionality to compete with iPad would feel relieved from headache where Apple would take most of the pain. Competitors just need to ensure good working product for the price they were planning to sell earlier.

Thank you Apple for providing options!

You're comparing the dollar to a basket of currencies that are also dropping. Compare it to gold or oil and see how much it really is dropping.

The dollar's purchasing power is still higher than it was at this time last year. Commodities go from due to traders and political events. It's not necessarily a commentary on a dollar's worth.

Please let this rumour be just that: a rumour. As a poor college student, I sold my iPad 2 to make up for the majority of the cost of the iPad 3. I planned according to it having the same pricing structure as the iPad 2. If there is a price hike, then it looks like no iPad 3 for me. So sad because I really wanted that retina display :(

I would rather have a $400 7 inch ipad than a 10 inch that cost $580.

Ditto that. Give me a smaller iPad with at least 1 gig of memory and I'd be a happy camper. I want to replace my iPad 1, but not at those prices. Hope this is just all rumor.

Assuming the new models are more expensive, I can't believe people will pay for them.

I still don't get the lure of the iPad. It can't do what my Macbook does (e.g. watch videos and email at same time) and it is not portable cf. my iPhone for mobile use.

I understand its positioned in a mystical "third category", but it is clearly not designed with me and my needs in mind. I'm not "against" iPads, I just don't get them.

I'm curious - who will pay more (hypothetically, vis this article) for a new iPad, and what will it be used for primarily?

Totally agree with you. I find the iPad to be useless. The only reason I could think people buy iPads is that they think it will replace a computer. It is just a big ipod, nothing else.

Clearly, you have never used one in more than a cursory manner if you think it's "just a big iPod". That's what people were saying about the iPad when it was announced, before they had a chance to get their hands on one.

Even the first generation iPad has for the most part replaced my laptop.

Edit: I find this whole story bogus. No way will Apple continue to sell the iPad 2 at the current price, unless it is also upgraded.
