I'm confused. First you say you knew full well what was coming and then the next sentence contradicts you "knowing full well what was coming..."

I guess you really didn't know, but saying you did sounded good?

No, I said I'd sell my iPad 2 for a 3 and take the £100 loss (going rate on eBay) for 128gb.

LOL, unfortunately I tend to agree with you.

I'll be disappointed if they up the price, it will shut out more users than bring them in, maybe the iPad 3 will be aimed at the 'pro' market and iPad 2 will get a price drop and minor spec bump?

This idea sort of fits in with the two different chips being developed simultaneously, doesn't it? Minor bump for the iPad 2 (A5X) and keep the 499 price, and the iPad 3 would get the A6.

Maybe... just maybe, this means the iPad 2 will have the A5X, while the more expensive iPad 3 will have the A6, along with a few other perks (ex: better camera).

We'll soon find out...

Folks, the quadruple-pixel ("retina") display is higher resolution than most desktop monitors. That's some seriously high-end hardware. Getting it into a $499 device is really pushing it.

Personally, I expected the base model iPad 3 to be $600-$700, while the iPad 2 remained on the market at $300 or $400.

i rather have a A15 architecture dual core then a quad core A9 based CPU.

Why would you rather have the A5X dual over the Quad A6...just curious on the technical answer.

The Transformer Prime I got recently has a quad core, 1gb ram, 32gb plus an SD Slot for 32 more at 30 bucks and all that for $499. The iPad is Pricy enough, prices should remain the same.

Why does the iPad have to have 4G LTE? Isn't there wifi pretty much anywhere you'd use it? And couldn't you just use your phone as a mobile hotspot if not? No way would I pay 100 extra (or whatever it is) for cellular connectivity. I get 4G being a selling feature for phones, but not for tablets.

Just curious how many tablet specific apps are available in the android market?

A lot of people don't have wifi everywhere they go. A lot of people use iPads during commutes to and from work. A lot of people have 'dumb' phones because they don't want to spend $80+ on a phone a month. For those who do have smart phones, mobile hotspot kills battery and cost extra. The $130 also gets you a GPS built into the iPad, which can work without data. Keep in mind, 4G is as fast or faster than a lot of peoples home internet as well...

I wasn't aware I had to explain the first 3 revisions of no price increase.. and the iPod did undergo a pricing "restructure".. the price was increased and then set back down either the following year or during the year...

Your initial comment referred to the iPhone going up in spec while staying the same price, and your answer was that it was subsidized.

I gave you examples of where Apple items increased in spec without being subsidized. And no, the iPod touch hasn't changed in price since it was released, with the exception of it going down with the 8GB in 2011.

I love the spy reports. High-security cargo flights, leaked flight numbers and pricing data...

This is almost like a mini-thriller, and it's about something as silly as a consumer electronic device.

Non 3G ipads don't have GPS???
I always thought they did.... (I could be mistaken.)

Apple has MORE LIQUID CASH in their bank account than any other company in the world..

They will never go above $499 for the base model..... no need with all that cash..

They would rather take a loss on the tablet initially, and make it up when prices drop on parts, and also on subs from 3g data plans and app sales..

then their margin will drop, which will immediately tumble its stock price. every $10 of aapl's stock price moves, it's hundreds of dollars for me, so no, i rather pay $600 for an iPad and have AAPL keeps growing, all the way to $700, then i will see with my gain.

I'm not saying that this is what will happen.... but you did miss the other side of the argument...

A $x increase in price also means an y% decrease in demand.
So instead of selling 15 million iPad 3 they might only seen 10 million. That will cause your stock to tumble too...

Pricing is a VERY important component of a product and can make or break a product very easily. Apple has historically favoured stable pricing. So I will be very interested in seeing what move they make here.

Horrible news. Especially with a $100 android tablet being released in China recently. Apple is such a rip off. I wish I didn't like their stuff so much.

Let's be reasonable here.

First, no one likes a price increase. We'd all prefer if the new iPad was $70 less than an iPad 2, but that's just not realistic. A 9.5" Retina Display must cost a ton, and if the iPad 3 has a 4g LTE chip as well, that's probably pricey too.

No other manufacturer has even come close to matching the iPad's specs and price. It's just a lot of tech in a very small package.

No $100 tablet is going to be comparable to the iPad. I've played with a few of those cheap tablets you can find on QVC or the Home Shopping Network. They're awful. The touch screens are mushy and unresponsive. The processor is slow and under-powered. The software is flakey and incongruous.

Love or hate Apple, you can't play the "Apple Hardware is way over-priced" card when it comes to the iPad.

You people crack me up! You want Apple to invest their time/money in making a new iPad3, but you expect to pay the same as an iPad2.

"You're ridiculous!" - Judge Judy.

starting with only 16 gig? still??? my good ooooold blue ipod has 16 gig.

Sorry but I disagree with you. Apple spends time and money to make new iPads so they entice people to buy more and stay ahead of competition while keeping maximum market share.

Wow, you got jacked on that price. I sold my 16gb iP2 wifi only for $400 cash here in NYC.

Also, absolutely no way they increase the price. Give me an example of any Apple consumer product (i.e. non-PC) that has ever seen a price increase for a future generation.

This is the Midwest, not a lot of buyers.

Why should they upgrade the outdated iPad 2?
Apple will, if, sell it as the same model as it's being sold today.
They also never changed any iPhone which was continued being sold after a new iPhone came out except cutting storage.
