Please list the services where you stream your webcam in 1080p. I'll wait.

Hint: none.

I fully understand you could conceivably use webcam for local recording, but people doing serious recording aren't using a built-in camera. The webcam is for streaming, and most streaming services are going to flux between 240p and 720p at an absolutely maximum.

I'm all for having a better image quality (better sensor, more light), but 1080p resolution specifically is absolutely meaningless for Facetime and all of your other video conferencing.

Sincerely,
Senior Developer for a major video conferencing company

You're right about the 720 streaming limitation, but: the new 1080p camera in the Macbook Pro (and hopefully in next year's Air M1 gen 2) will have a physically larger, more modern and overall improved sensor. The image processing which the current M1 portables are applying is quite aggressive and can only do so much in certain situations. A modern 1080p camera, even when compressed to 720p during streaming, will have a significantly improved image quality, especially in less than ideal lighting situations.

So ... I do get what you are saying, and most likely I will get a first gen M1 Air during the next months (I do not need more graphics power than the M1 offers, so M1 Air is generally a great fit for my needs), but still, I do wish it had an improved camera.

Face ID makes less sense (or seems less advantageous) to me on a MacBook than it does on an iPad or iPhone. Face ID on an iPad or iPhone could be an advantage in one-handed use applications, and you're usually going to be facing the iPhone/iPad anyway from the start, while, for a MacBook, you're either always going to be touching the keyboard anyway so why not start out with touch ID, or you're going to be using it in clamshell mode and won't have access to the camera...

Having said that, I vastly prefer touch ID on the iPhone/iPad, as touch ID is too limiting sometimes. I can't unlock it with a finger when the phone is stored away from view, especially when driving. But you know Apple...aways have to remove "something" physical every year or two under the guise of giving the user something new, only to backtrack 50% of the time after realizing their error.
It makes sense on a computer because you are always facing the screen directly, that’s not the case with a phone and the fact you are holding the phone only makes Touch ID a better option on a device like that

I often read people attributing thinness of the MacBook (or any laptop for that matter) for having 720p webcam and not 1080p or higher, but does the higher resolution webcam (at least 1080p) make it thicker or is it possible to have a 1080p webcam with the same thickness but wider? so it would fit in a screen having the same thickness but would take up more space horizontally along the width which is okay.

The current iPad Pro cameras are both capable of 4K video if I am not mistaken. Why is a upgrade to 1K video something to get all all excited about? It also is capable of “center stage” functionality. Why would it make sense to limit a pro laptop to 1K?

“4k” is 2000p it’s not a 4x increase in comparison, just 2x

All the people worried about 1080p, 4k, 8k, ... It is like the MegaPixel race / rage all over again. My camera has 8MP, mine has 12, 16, ... More has to be better!!! Except when it comes to photo quality that's just one metric. And, we're talking video chat and web conferencing, that's going to compressed heavily to save bandwidth anyhow. Should it have been a 1080 unit for a while? Sure. To keep up with the competition, I guess. But it is hardly critical.

I think it's fair to say that this wouldn't be News if Apple had real, true Competition.

But, I think that's about to change.

Antitrust coming at them from one side, & small, more-nimble, more-innovative companies coming at them from the other !

I would NOT want to be in Tim Cook's shoes right now !

There is a reason he appears to be aging fast right now !

It's called "stress" !

BTW, if I was running the show @ Apple, my pick in July 2021 would be 1440p60.

Why is this guy seen as a reliable leaker? He made two common sense tweets. That the iPad pro will have the M1 (known for months before it was launched) and the 24” iMac would be M1. Anyone with any common sense knew that considering the iMac is entry level and it makes no sense for it to get the same chip as the big iMac and higher end MacBook Pros.

He didn’t even go on a limb and say the iPad chip will be marketed M1. He just said it will be the same chip. Everyone guessed this.
