AirPlay delay
Hmm, real-time.
Strictly speaking that might be true, but you need to account for the delay inherent in the AirTunes protocol. (Unless AirPlay somehow improves on AirTunes?). So you'll be scratching away, but hearing the results **in real-time**... 1 to 2 seconds later.
Streaming pre-mixed / auto-mixed stuff wouldn't be tripped-up by the delay. But interactive mixing probably won't work over AirPlay.

I love this application, I have it on my Macbook Pro. The iPad version looks amazing, the only concern I have is after a short time the glass gets filled with fingerprints from scratching which can ruin the experience since the glass doesn't remain smooth from all the fingerprints.
I think that was one of the coolest videos I've ever seen.

Can you imagine going to a club where the DJ is using this and streaming it via AirPlay to the console and amps?
He (or a cute she) could literally walk the floor of the club and mix the soundtrack Live in the palm of their hands!
(Okay, I know that with the delay from Airplay and the lack of cue it probably couldn't happen, but it'd be bada$$ to walk in and see!)

I wonder if it would be possible to send the pre-cueing output to the headphone jack only and the line out to Airplay only (or vice versa) and keep both in Stereo? iPad + Airport Express would still allow you to travel light.

The iPad actually does (albeit unofficially) allow external audio interfaces via USB using the Camera Connection Kit, but as far as I know this always replaces the built-in audio, so you can't use both at the same time. Perhaps Apple will enable this in the future though, they seem to be relaxing their restrictions a bit.
That video was simply amazing. It's nice to see what developers can come up with when given such a nice foundation to develop on. I don't think such fully featured apps like this are going to work well on a little 7" tablet. If I were Apple, I would have apps like this all over my iPad commercials.
Edit: On second thought, if I were Apple I would just buy this company outright, make this a built in part of the iPod app, and integrate it with the iTunes DJ feature. This app could be positioned like how iMovie, GarageBand, and other iLife apps positioned for nonprofessionals to be able to do some nice creative things. I for one would love to throw a party at my house and try out the whole DJ thing. That would be cool. 😎

If you output audio via airplay, you should be able to cue via headphones.
There is cueing support in the OS X version. I would be very surprised if they hadn't include this in the iOS version.
Audio out via the dock connector might be another option that would allow cueing with headphones.

Agreed. I'm a musician and I've been mostly disappointed with the audience of a lot of music apps in the app store. They are geared more towards non-musicians. There are some good song writing utilities and a few interesting things like fader boards. Turntables are cool, but in the end you can't do a lot groundbreaking with virtual turntables that hasn't been done. I'd personally like to see a port of Logic but I don't think they will happen for a few generations when the A4 is beefed up considerably. The airplay streaming is welcome though, that might allow the ipad instruments that are sort of interesting to be incorporated into a band/live performance setting.

without proper cueing and stereo output, plus airplay latency, this is just another gimmick dj app.
there is so much potential in the ipad screen real state for something really cool looking and entertaining to the eyes. why do we need the "turntable" design?

Maybe this is important for DJs, I don't know, but for me it's important because it's a great demo for the kinds of things that are possible on the iPad. To have that kind of power and interactivity available in a 1.5 pound device the size of a thin book is just mind blowing. How can you be a user or a developer and not be excited when you watch this, even if you have no interest in DJing software?

we need a dock connector soundcard and app development from the likes of N.I., Ableton, Arturia and dare I say, Apple ? (Logic, or more likely Mainstage. Full audio unit support on the iPad PLEASE ! and more RAM in the next iPad)

For recording mixtapes, they may follow the same pattern as Ampkit (amp modeling software for guitars). There is a line out for the audio output...but if you want to record it goes local to the iDevice. Then you can export your recording.
As with Ampkit, I think this will be a cool tool for those people that want to dabble but not put down the money for equipment. It's great for a DJ to play with on the road as well if they want to experiment with some mixes.
Someone mentioned the camera kit. There is another guitar app called Stompbox that purports to support the camera kit. I've not seen it in action though.
