Also:
- weird volume button placement and behavior (orientation-dependent)
- less comfortable to hold than the older models with the smooth back curve

The iPad mini 6 was really a big disappointment.
ProMotion and FaceID would make this the perfect iPad (at least for me).

I got the mini 6 for $399 and was delighted by the physical size. I didn’t care about jelly scrolling, found the touchID good enough, so was fine with the overall tech, but what eventually pushed me toward a trade-in was having to fuss with text sizes or get out my reading glasses, which I never need to do with iPhone or regular sized iPads.

I used the trade-in gift card toward a refurbished 11” M1 iPP and while the size is slightly larger than I’d prefer for casual ebook reading, it’s so much more useful to me in other ways and I only need to have one iPad.

ProMotion is an OLED thing, isn’t it? I don’t see Apple being able to target the $400 base price point of the mini with an OLED panel just yet, so, of course, ProMotion/120Hz would be out of the picture. The iPad mini is nearly as much of a budget model as the base iPad, and I don’t really see it going OLED until the base iPad is able to.
Post seems to have gotten significant negative attention. I was apparently mistaken about the price point (it’s selling for $500 currently) and about ProMotion being exclusively OLED. Still, I don’t really see the Mini getting ProMotion until, say, the base iPhone and the iPad Air get it, since Apple’s got a price point to reach, and I don’t see them being able to reach that price point in a $500 device if they haven’t yet reached it in a smaller $800 device.

How come some people just don't see the jelly scroll or the difference between 120 and 60? I see no difference. I see fine [I think] otherwise.

Nope, ProMotion exists in the LCD 11 inches iPad Pro and in the 12.9 inches (miniLED) iPad, same as when it debuted in the 10.5 inches iPad Pro (LCD as well).
So, no, it's not exclusive of OLED.

Samsung and friends make panels based on what Apple and other companies provide to them. They don’t make displays with dynamic island or a notch and specific holes in certain places for cameras until someone like Apple has them make it.
No, but they are the ones who develop the technology. Apple might telll them “make it without PWM”, but it’s still the manufacturers who will have to develop the technology. It’s not like with the SoCs where Apple provides the schematics.

The mini competes too much with iphone due to its size, they will never make a competent all out iPad mini.

Lack of awareness is why this issue remains unaddressed, and likely will remain that way for years.
I haven’t seen any statistics about how many people are seriously affected. And it might be technologically difficult to address, not to mention that you’d have to do it all over again for micro-LED.

Why is anyone surprised by this? ProMotion has thus far only been available on screens that are mini-LED or OLED, because Apple sees the two features as complimentary. It also makes for great marketing.

Since the Mini is unlikely to be branded as a Pro device in the future, I don’t see this changing.

Form factor is set. My concern is what kind of display specs i get for my money. So price -> display. I guess just like others.
I have mini 5 and i see there some sort of “jelly scrolling” too. But money for mini 6 was not not worth it. If there was laminated ipad, i would not hesitate buying a second one. And one remark on CEOs comment “iphone every year because people want them”, absurdly ditching the answer. Too afraid to say that the green approach is only about making money. Scouts care for nature without much publicity for over .. 100 years?

I dont see the point of this upgrade if it happens.

Surely, the mini at its price point deserves at least the M1 processor and a better display.

Those, like me, that have the mini and have got rid of the larger iPads due to the mini's protability and utility... dont have much reason to upgrade if its such a lacklustre update.

Keeping the display as it is and simply upgrading the A series processor for another A series processor doesnt seem worthwhile. Im sure there would be more to it.

I think Apple needs to decide or understand the audience for the minis. We dont really want a mini 'standard' iPad along with its deficiencies AND higher price point - but a 'mini air' is more what the machine is - and therefore should have the M1 at least.
M1 would be nice, but in Apples view of obsolete products, M1 is old and in 2024 will be even older. My concern is loss of 2 years if iOS.

Tim is just itching to release a Mini Pro. Starting at $699. :apple: Someone is stopping him behind the scenes.

Not possible without losing color accuracy. Also, Apple doesn’t make their own panels, so it’s Samsung and friends who own the tech who would have to fix it.
Well then ink paper kindle like display is the solution. Or no display. Its absurd just like this claim of yours. I see no other approach than - if i do not like that, i do not buy. Simply without having alternative. My sypathy to your observation and concern is preserved.

I have no issues with my iPad mini 6.

And while I can acknowledge a perceptible difference when I've toyed with one of Apple's "ProMotion" displays in the store, it's nothing I care enough to raise a pitchfork over. 60Hz will do just fine.

Jelly scrolling is only visible (to those who see it) in portrait mode. It’s not present in landscape. I imagine Apple has enough user data to know what percentage of users use the iPad in landscape vs portrait.

My wife doesn’t follow online forums, like most people, so she’s never been bothered by it on her iPad mini. I would hear about it if she had a complaint…
What was seen can not be unseen. Badge of Jelly scrolling observation ? This gives you an opportunity for harmless trolling. Such as - darling i read that apple gives ……(insert something like brutal discount on watches) to ipad owners who experience shattering of lines during scrolling. They admit they made a mistake and issued faulty displays. I am happy that your ipad is OK. Since i have not heard you mentioning that. Wait and count to 20 :) just joking

This isn’t even close to as big of a problem as PWM that everyone seems to ignore or sweep under the rug. OLED screens cause nausea and headaches in a considerable amount of people some of whom don’t even know where their symptoms are coming from. Fix PWM Apple!!!
Just blame the symptoms on 5g and nano bots

There are two ways of changing display brightness, either raising or lowering the current, or keeping the current constant but turning it on and off at differing frequencies (PWM). It is well known that changing the current causes color shifts for OLED, especially at lower brightness. Is there some other solution? So far none has been found, apparently.

The mini has been languishing for years. Might be time for it to go.

When the original one came out it was a sensation. I even bought one myself. But over the years it has been overshadowed in the iPad lineup and has fallen by the way side. If Apple isn’t going to be serious about it, then maybe it’s for the best to say goodbye. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I would say that as far as i remember, games, devices with displays always mention nausea or epilepsy warning in their manual. Its curse of mankind, i mean the sensitivity to displays.

I’m all for choice, but I also wonder how many people are affected. The OLED Nintendo Switch outsold the LCD version by a large margin last year, despite being higher-priced.

You mean Apple creating less than mediocre products for years now? True.
i was waiting for thunderbolt 5, 240 Hz refresh rate, 8K resolution, and beefy processor to develop/train/run ML/AI programs on this iPad and replace this with Mac Pro, disappointed.
and use it as a server to stream media to all other devices.

Wishlist for an updated Mini 7:
  • A16
  • Significantly smaller bezels and more rounded frame edges, generally smaller/lighter. My Mini 5 was perfect as far as size/shape/weight (other than the screen size).
  • WiFi 6E
  • Updated cameras
  • 128GB minimum storage
  • Some kind of landscape-oriented smart connector to be usable with its own first-party keyboard attachment/case. The biggest downside for the mini for me has always been its reliance on bluetooth keyboards. Probably would be too small for a trackpad, but even just being able to type on real keys would make it immensely more useful for productivity tasks.
ProMotion would be nice, but not a dealbreaker for me. I'd much rather have double the storage.
