How are you supposed to open it with one hand? The base won't be heavy enough, or the hinge won't be stiff enough to be able to keep the lid up, or shut tight -- one or the other.

You can't (reliably) open any Macbook (Air, rMBP) with one hand as it is. I can't open my 2013 MBA and I can't (reliably) open my wife's 15" 2013 rMBP with one hand either. Neither is heavy enough with too stiff of a hinge (that's not a bad thing) to open it one handed. I'm really quite okay with that.

This may have been mentioned a dozen times already, but could the 12" MacBook Air and iPad Pro be the same thing? Especially now that we have an iPad Pro mold showing an apparent hinge on the side?

Both this concept and the iPad would have the exact same ports as well. Headphone jack and charge port, only the iPad Pro...errr...MacBook Air's port allows for USB connection which could be the "Pro" feature of the new iPad.

D.

I agree. The only difference between the iPad Pro and the iMac Air (other than USB port you mentioned) would be the OS and the keyboard. Third party keyboards are out there with no issues. However, iOS cannot do true multi-tasking yet – one app at a time. Still the form factor and probably the price points are starting to blur. The hardware specs are barely discussed by Apple so that is not a major differentiator. It really only leave the OS, but how far off is a blur in the OS (already started but only barely)?

You are opening it wrong.

Seems like every rendering with a screen/keyboard fitted that tightly to the edges of every rumored device over the years still has never seen the light of day.

Never seen a 12" PowerBook?

I don't see Apple NOT putting a Thunderbolt port on this computer, but then I've been wrong before. We shall see. No use working yourself up on a "rendering" from "rumors".

Looks beautiful, but the rMBP is already as thin as I want a laptop to be. The ports barely fit on it as it is, and it's so light that they had to make the MagSafe magnet weaker for it, so it now falls out really easily by accident.

EDIT: Only one USB port and no video output?! Pass for sure.

but it is so thin, and thin = beautiful

What's the max amperage over USB 3?

I'll bet £20 it's not going to charge over USB.

Through the USB-C port. There is a "Power Delivery" spec that allows for 100 watts of power, which is more than enough to charge a laptop. So with USB-C / USB 3.1, you could have a single cable for everything: power, display, networking, drives, PCIe devices, etc.

So whats at the other end of this everything cable? Does it split out to a power brick, display port jack, ethernet jack, various kinds of drive connectors, PCIe, etc? Or does this require a second piece of hardware that is a kind of hub so that it's USB-c to USB-c but then the hub has all of the traditional jacks on it? If the latter, is this cutting the jacks off of the laptop (while probably leaving the pricing about the same) and then selling this extra hub to boot? And for what? "Thinner"? I don't love "thinner" if the price of it is having to carry other hardware around so that the thinner thing can be connected. I'd rather have current "thin" with multiple standard ports.

IMO, "thinnest" is only cool on the first impression made to someone who hasn't seen it. After that it's just a laptop. If I have to carry a bunch of adapters or a hub along with it, it seems they should count in some kind of "thinner" contest Apple keeps playing. Else, if "thinner" is so important that jettisoning more utility to get thinner is paramount, why not just kick the battery, keyboard, screen, guts, etc out too and sell us a thin & light thunderbolt or USB-c hub to which all of that can be sold and attached separately to yield a working computer? That seems to be the faster path to the thinnest & lightest (possible) "Macbook*"

just give us an iPad that can run OS X and I'll bring my own keyboard (and mouse)

Still think apple should release a backlit surface pro keyboard for the ipad - have wanted this ever since i copped my 1st ipad (gen 1). Yes the ipad is functional, however the virtual keybaord severely hinders productivity for my needs, and most professionals i know.

When did MacRumors get into the rendering business? And if you are going to shoot wildly at what it might look like why not make it something interesting.:p

So how the hell are you supposed to charge it?

Odds are very good the Retina MBA will skip Broadwell and go Skylake..

Intel was pushing very hard at CES the fact that Skylake will eliminate most cables to a computer. Including Wireless Charging, Wireless 4k Displays, and Wireless Device connectivity.

Think about that.. if the original leak is real, then they've likely already decided on Skylake and their goal is to kill the cable to the Ultraportable computer.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that Skylake is purposed a mid-2015 release and that the new Retina Macbook Air is also after min-2015..

Wont be the first time Apple got first dibs on a very large batch of Intel chips for a big release...

Hmmm... not sure I like the different color options. I loved the aluminum look. I don't think a gold/champagne laptop would look very appealing.

Me neither, but then again that was the prevailing opinion about the gold iPhone and gold iPad too. And gold is selling like hotcakes.

If Apple added a retina screen to the current 13" MBA would it really be that much different than the 13" rMBP?

I had a gold 5s which I loved but I don't think it will work with a laptop. Not digging the white keyboard at all. I could see that looking dirty really fast.

Omg omg omg i want two of these inside me right now! One in my mouth and the other in my....;)

May be too early for this, but the recent patent on the flexible screen got me thinking. What if you clamshelled two small iPads; so it would open to one large screen, or close part-way with the bottom (horizontal) half used as a dynamic keyboard/mouse? How much can those things bend?
