will it be finally able to play internet movie file formats, eg. xvid and mkv, like the many other competing media players?

I have an iPhone, MBP, and soon to be iPad. I like downloading movies on the net. Right now, I have to download movies to a hard drive and watch them on an Xbox in .avi, and it's a crapshoot on whether or not it works.

Time for AppleTv?

$39.99 Optional Controller..... BAM!!!!!!!! MEGA BOMB.... Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft just lost the console wars..

$4.99 console quality games on the Apple TV

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Looks like only 1080p eople will give a crap about this Apple TV update.

I think he means a HDMI dongle you plug into a tv that acts as an airplay receiver for iPad mirroring.

They already make that. Its called the AppleTV. No way they'd sell a $39 device that cannibalizes their $99 device's large selling point.

Seems interesting. Finally they do it.
The $39 item is probably a new case for the iPad 3.

Or an advanced Bluetooth Remote Control for the Apple TV? :p
Mmm... Maybe not. Apple likes the actual simplistic Remote Control format.
Perhaps, is it a Bluetooth Gamepad for both the AppleTV and iPad 3? :D

Or maybe it's just a case like you suggest! If it's a case, I like the price too.:)

Just 13 hours and 24 minutes more to finally know what all these items are! :D

Yeah, I'm sure plenty of developers will be interested in developing console quality games and selling them at 4.99.....

dont forget the invite said something for you to SEE and TOUCH!! I think the touch refers to a new product not specifically related. They see Icade, and these other controller adapters maybe they figured out a better way

To make the Apple TV into a console, it would need to have a decent amount of storage.
Three Possible Options?:
- Increased internal storage,
- USB Port for the enduser to add a hard drive or flash drive (very unlikely!)
- Better have a very fast internet connection to download the games when you want to play. (I wouldn't settle for having to wait to play)

Hopefully this will allow me to convert all my blu-ray rips to a apple tv friendly format without loosing video or hd audio quality. If it can I will buy 2 right away. If not I'll just buy 1 to replace my current apple tv in the living room.

$39 HDMI Dongle for iPad HD airplay mirroring?

AirPlay is wireless. i.e. No dongles. That's the whole point.

And Apple already sells a $39 dongle for wired HDMI output from an iPad or iPhone 4/4S.

An Apple TV *is* the dongle you attach to an HDTV to send AirPlay video to it.

No it doesnt how about adding an SD slot and allowing me to put in a 32gig SD card and just using iPad games at higher resolutions??

No cost increase in the unit and $4.99 is more than what you paid for most of the games out now! some of these are Console like.. im just saying middle ground games more than simple casual and less than consoles. Handheld kinda.. but with improved graphics and controls.

AppleTV not going anywhere...

This is probably temporary, and by that I mean this product will be discontinued. They're obviously working on the new Apple Television which will eventually replace the Apple TV.

Not likely. Take a poll amongst your friends / family, I can virtually guarantee that nearly none of them buys a new 1,500.00 - 2,000.00 TV every year when the new model comes out.

Most people buy a TV and keep it for at least 10 years, maybe even longer, because there's simply no compelling reason to upgrade. Unlike a computer or an iDevice with their yearly increases in processing power, allowing us to do more with it, a TV's job is simply to show us stuff. Once bought, with proper care, it'll keep showing us stuff for 15-20+ years.

Sure, lots of people are currently upgrading their old tube TVs and RPTVs with the new LCD flat panels but once they're bought do you honestly expect people to go "Ooooh, Apple's new shiny TV! I totally have to junk this perfectly fine 60" 1080p LCD LED panel I spent 4 grand on 5 years ago so I can have easy access to the iTunes store from my couch (which I already have with my iPad and AppleTV via AirPlay)."

Not saying Apple shouldn't release an AppleTV TV, my perfectly fine 1080i RPTV is close to 10 years old and has some burn in around edges (not to mention crazy overscan) so I wouldn't mind replacing it and if the AppleTV TV looks good it'd definitely be a contender. But realistically its going to be a niche product, kind of like the Macs are now (notice how the iDevices are an overwhelmingly large part of Apple's business), because even with a kicking interface people aren't going to be rushing out every spring to buy a new AppleTV TV every spring.

It's a $39 FaceTime to mount on the top of your TV!

Nice idea. Could be wireless, but charge from the Apple TV's USB 2 port (or you could connect it to that if you hate wireless :p).

Curious to what an external FaceTime device would look like with today's designs given Apple hasn't made the external iSight in years.
