Sounds like you want a Macbook

I want a macbook pro with the power of an MSI GT series laptop. I'd go $500 higher on the mac for comparable specs at this point.

Not holding my breath, I guess it's the MSI and Windows for me this summer.

Right? God forbid they give customers something they've been asking for since 2011. The rMacbook is great, love the screen, but that single USB-C port and weak processor kills it for anyone doing more than web surfing, word processing, and light photo/video editing. Conversely, the Air has plenty of power but that screen looks like trash compared to the new retinas. Why is it so dang hard for Apple to give customers what they want instead of what Apple thinks they should want?

They did - it's called the rMBP 13". The 13" MBA has no retina screen, which needs more power and a larger battery to compensate. That's the exact improvements given to the rMBP 13".

True, it should make the ultrabook crowd happy. But now the rMBP is too wimpy for people who want a real computer.

The current 13" rMBP is only half a pound heavier than the Air, and although it lacks the Air's thin, tapered design it actually has a slightly smaller footprint than the Air. The price range overlaps with the Air considerably - if you buy anything other than the entry-level Air you're in rMBP price territory (although that's changed slightly since they bumped the entry Air to 8GB).

Its a fairly safe bet that a redesigned 13" rMBP will be thinner and lighter, and they ought to bump the default storage up to 256GB - if the price stays roughly the same then it will render the 13" Air pointless.

An Air would only make sense vs. a redesigned rMB if Apple push up the price of the rMBP range (which is possible).

And yet the Air still far outsells the MBP. Getting rid of the Air not only forces people to either spend more or less, but drops the machine selling the best for Apple right now. Seems a strange move.

WWDC: No MacBooks, sorry. Here are some Watch bands.

You think it's gonna be another Apple Watch stuff that they gonna announce along with OS X and iOS?

I honestly don't get the watch.

I'm a couple of years off 40 and haven't worn a watch since I was a kid. The only time my wife wears a watch is to dress up and then it's something dainty, circular and understated, not a big, blocky square. A quick survey of my friends and co-workers reveals a similar trend. My dad wears a watch - a Seiko he bought in the 80s with a battery that lasts a year - but he's 60 and belongs to the generation of men where a good watch was something to take pride in, much like a laptop is to Gen X and phones are to Gen Y/Millenials.

Who is this product for?

For years and years, Apple was fine not selling a sub-$1,000 Mac

Problem is, it set a trend trend. No-one wants to go back to those days, least not when Apple's QA is not what it once was and they've upped their planned obsolesce efforts.

Apple also needs to be very careful they don't price themselves out the European, Australian and Asian markets whose currencies are all losing ground to the $USD.

$2000AUD for a entry-level, single-port rMB is a really tough sell and very likely the reason why I've only seen one in the wild - and I live in an affluent city of 4 million people.

A new 13 or 14" Macbook will come to replace the Air 13, with similar specs. The current Airs will stay as is and linger in the background until sold out (cheap, well-powered and light).

New MBP's announced at wwdc.

So thats my bet. A bee Macbook size and new mbp's announced.

Would t it be a tragedy if the only announced a 13" mbp tho...

If Tim Cook so much as mentions watch straps at WWDC I'm going to buy a Skull Canyon NUC, stop worrying and learn to love Windows 10.

Give Linux a go first before shelling our for a Windows 10 licence, something like Elementary OS or Ubuntu Mate. Unless you're wedded to Office and Adobe's stuff, Linux is great alternative to OS X.

This will happen eventually. But they wouldn't be able to do this now and hit their sub-$1000 price points. Plus, I don't see why they would have bothered to recently lower Air prices if they were just going to get rid of them a month later.
Well, this is actually the original Macbook vs Macbook Pro lineup; that's what they had back in 2003-ish (can't recall exactly...), back when they had the white/black plastic ones, and the aluminum ones...

what Apple will continue to do is intentionally creating flaws in their lineups... so they can upsell you.

they do this with iPhone 16GB
they do the same with MBA's 2001-level screen.
...... rMB lack of ports

only idiots (and fanboys) will continue to encourage this kind of behaviour. Vote with your money, go get something else.

huh?... seriously, every company does this... they're trying to optimize their profit margin vs customer satisfaction balance. When you're choosing an item from a line-up of options, there's always a "correct" choice. The lower end is for those poor souls who genuinely can't afford the one they want, and the top end is for those with more money than sense, or those who are genuinely in need of as much performance as money can buy (i.e., the top end is still not enough, but they'll pay for whatever they can get).

I agree. The only thing I miss on my MacBook is magsafe. Kind of puzzled why they couldn't just make it thinner.

While I like MagSafe, it was never a killer feature and it's always been hampered by the fact that it's proprietary.

With USB-C some or all ports can charge which is especially handy if ports are available on both sides, quality non-Apple accessories will be available, and hubs/docking stations are a single, standardized connector.

If you're using your laptop while plugged in not at a desk, get an adapter. However, this is becoming less of an issue with increasing battery life.

I doubt it will happen, but I just want to see an internals spec update to the Air and Pro lines. USB-C/Thunderturd 3 is completely useless to me. Maybe in another few years when I need new external HDs.

My 2013 13" MBA is perfect for me--I am even fine with the screen as long as its Samsung (just returned a 2015 with a LG screen that was horrendous), but my wife wants it. I have done iOS and Android development (for work), and even run 6 VMs in VirtualBox at the same time, and it has handled everything I have thrown at it with ease.

I just bought (today) my first 13" rMBP (16/i7/512) and will get it after WWDC. Gotta have at least 2 USB-A and a Thunderbolt 2 port (for an external monitor and my work iMac). Investing in all new dongles (2 X USB-A, Ethernet, Mini display port and VGA) just isn't going to cut it.

If I have any issues with it, I will return it and go for a Thinkpad X1 Carbon. Windows 10 is looking more and more appealing with every hardware delay and OS X debacle.

Look at Surface and their copies (HP; iPad Pro) to see where all the innovation is at. Heck, most of not all PC makers are already using Skylake.
Apple, please make us love your Mac product line again - there's too much going for iPhone 7 and 8, which aren't even launched yet.

I just see the WWDC being laser focused on the 4 OSes and there are so many to cover and only two hours max. Take out the usual pre-opening fluff about how eco-sensitive Apple is, or how great Apple Music is doing, that leaves maybe 25 minutes per OS. No time for hardware. Plus WWDC of late has not been a hardware showcase. If Apple show off an new h/w update it seems the Mac Pro would be the logical choice being it's a bit crusty again.
How did they squeeze Phil's "my ass" in that?

If Apple removes the magsafe from the macbook pro I will be very very disappointed
Just another expensive dongle:

[doublepost=1465459677][/doublepost]What if they rename MBA to "Macbook Affordable", since MBP will be lighter, thinner and have less ports than MBA?
Ooor, MBP will be renamed "Macbook Helium"...

I could see the MBA dropping down market and taking the place of the 2012 MBP and the white MacBook that seems to make the most sense.

I wonder if these reports are getting confused, why would Apple update the Macbook Air when it seems that the Macbook will replace it? didn't Apple already update the Air anyway with an 8GB RAM increase at the same time as they updated the Macbook earlier this year. So unless they have something more substantial to announce with the Air, wouldn't they have just updated it at the same time as adding the 8GB RAM (as standard).

if they are going to add a retina screen, USB-C and make it thinner and lighter, then why is the Macbook around? My theory was that Apple announced the Macbook in order to (eventually) replace the Macbook Air because it was lighter and had a much better screen. The only thing i can think of is, if Apple drop the Air name, make a bigger 15" and bring it in line with the Macbook name, so it would go like this:

12" Macbook
15" Macbook

13" Macbook Pro
15" Macbook Pro

It's strange that literally no one has mentioned the fragmentation that would occur if they updated the rMBo with OLED Touch Panel and kept the rMB and MBA as is. Would this be an up-sell feature? Even so, what would be the point of implementing such a feature only on the rMBp models for developers? You're making their life more difficult.

I give more credence to the discontinuing of the MBA simply for the fact of the OLED rumor. Why have this one feature on your top-end models? If that's true, it's going to trickle down to the rest of the line up.

Also, notice that on the Mac Page, the MacBook Air sits between the rMB and rMBP. It's clearly marketing itself as superior to the rMB.

No matter what, the current MBA is an EOL product. They're going to replace it. I suspect that they'll be an entire refresh of the Mac lineup later this year. With all chassis incorporating OLED touch strip.

I am thinking/hoping that it will actually be Macbook Pro in tapered chassis resembling Macbook Air.

That's a good thought actually, I wonder if Apple are doing this on purpose, they know they can't stop leaks these days, so why not confuse the situation and get people wonder if Mac's will be announced at WWDC? we only know a few things about the software that will be announced at WWDC. If Apple announce/update new MacBook Airs and Macbook Pro's at WWDC i will have a tough decision, especially if they put a retina in the Air.
