New screen resolutions and 15" MacBook Air

Along with the updated Intel Core iX processors, standard 128GB SSD/4GB RAM, TB Port and Backlit keyboards, it would be great to have the following updated 16:9 screen resolutions:

11" Air : 1366x768 (16:9 ratio, no change)

13" Air : 1600x900 (bump from the current 1400x900, 16:10 ratio)

15" Air : 1920x1080 (Mythical ??, better than 1680x1050 16:10 ratio on hi-res 15" MBP)

At this price, if they bump the 13" MBA rez, it would hands-down beat the brand new Sony Z Vaio (base version w/ 1600x900 for $2000 USD, the high end has FHD though in 13.1")

Not a big fan of 16:9 rez, but since Apple already selected 16:9 on 11" MBA (and their iMac lineup), to be consistent, they should bump it to 1600x900 on the 13" MBA.

Along with the FHD 1080p on the 15" MacBook Air, it should get an extra USB port, Mic input, kensington lock, big battery for the big screen that gets ~ 10 hours and an option for 8GB RAM/512 SSD ;)

There I said it all in my first post ever on MacRumors!!

This is good. Any computer that costs around $1000 has to come with 4 GB or ram. Anything less is ridiculous in this day and age. Doesn't matter if it's an ultraportable.

And now for the Macbook... and maybe the mac mini... I'm expecting more ram in both of you too!

It would be nice if they put 4GB in the MacBook, but it's not nearly as big a deal when you can swap it out yourself for ~$40.

It'll be intel. No room for anything else.

There would be plenty of room if Intel put their IO hubs on a diet.
Those things are still huge considering how little they do in the i-Series cpu's.

Unless this is the custom part that was rumored.

The storage and memory upgrades would be very welcome :)

However, i'd be very disappointed if any of those 17 W CPUs went into the 13 inch Air. It makes me doubt this guy's credibility.

16 X 9 is a horrible monitor resolution! 16 X 10 is perfect.

Is this your only (primary) machine? I have trouble believing that somebody can have this little of digital data (once you subtract the OS and the applications).

If you read just a little bit further into my post you would have seen this :)

"But I would also like to add that it is NOT my main machine, my main production machine is an i7 8GB 15" Thinkpad."

The only reason I got the little guy is for making iPhone apps, but it has proved quite nice as my Thinkpad is also my entertainment center for gaming and movies, so I can have the Air on the couch with me.

Base configuration of 4Gb RAM and 128Gb SSD sounds good to me at the same price points of the current base models.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_8 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E401 Safari/6533.18.5)

Yeah, it'll run fine on the base 11" air right now. Those who bitch obviously don't have one, or they have unrealistic expectations of the product. I wouldn't buy a Mini Cooper if I had a family of 6, so why would someone buy a C2D with 2 GB of Ram if they're wanting to perform video rendering and intensive tasks suited for a more capable processor?

Heh - no but I did have 4 people, 3 of whom are well over six feet tall in my MINI the other day. :) It wasn't even that crowded!

16/9 in a 13" laptop?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

11" Airs are 16/9 to accomodate a full-size keyboard. NO computers besides that and the 21" iMac have a 16/9 resolution, and hopefully never will.

27" iMac is 16:9 too. 2560x1440 is 16:9, 2560x1600 is 16:10.

I'll believe it (new air) when I see it...but it's worth reading this thread just for the free management advice...thanks!

Sorry for being a noob, but what is so terrible about 16:9 on a laptop? Or 16:10? What are the benefits/disadvantages of either?

16:9 has less pixels than 16:10. The advantage with the former is smaller footprint, and the disadvantage should obvious: 10 % less vertical space.

More to the point, 16:9 has fewer VERTICAL pixels, so toolbars and menu bars which are often above and below the workspace on applications eat into the available work space, as does the dock/taskbar.

A larger 16:10 monitor is often 1920x1200. A 16:9 monitor is 1920x1080 - which is about 10% shorter than the 16:10 - 120 pixel height lost.

16:9 isn't "wide-screen", it's "short-screen".

One advantage of 16:9 is cost. It's smaller and cheaper, and many LCD production facilities are set up to make 16:9 for HD television sets. Higher volume for 16:9 means lower prices as well.

Not wanting to beat a dead horse, but is there a consensus as to how the intel 3000 integrated graphics are going to effect performance, even with the new processor?

I'm figuring that if the combo was a step backward, there would be howls of protest from current 13" mbp owners, right?

Looking forward to the rumor being true. Would love an 11" MBA with 4gb RAM and 256gb SSD. I'll take the 128gb SSD is 256gb is not an upgradable option.

Will add to what I have now (4th Mac at the house)

interesting!

A Macbook Air 11.6

256gb ssd
8g Ram
backlit keyboard
thunderbolt

if that's true
I would really really consider upgrading!

But I thought That 256gb was too hot for the 11.6 and ate up about half of the battery life they wanted to get out of that model.

who knows!

It's very nice to see Apple finally act like a premium company by including an appropriate amount of ram and ample sized SSD's as standard.

This as compared to the measly 2GB the 2010 models had. I knew it was a "Dell" like move, just to maximize their profit, yet when Apple is already so top heavy with cash, it was a very greedy move.

This round of MBA's, by all outward appearances if the rumors are true, will be the ones to have.

I think they will make their macs more cheap and appetible in order to make the massive iOS userbase switch to Mac as well. It's preferable for them to make $100 less out of each computer but sell 150% of the Macs they would sell by mantaining premium prices with cut-down hardware.

I would prefer to have a wider 1600x900 (16/9 ratio) instead of 1440x900 (16/10 ratio) on a 13.3" MBA (or MBP). Notice that there is NO loss of vertical pixels (both 900). However, the 16/9 in this particular case gives 160 EXTRA horizontal pixels (very useful for some ppl, YMMV).

But in general, 16/10 has more pixels compared to 16/9 ratio (like 1920x1200 vs 1920x1080).

With all the rumored upgrades we've been hearing about, i doubt theyll lower the price. Thats assuming the rumors are true, if not than its possible, im expecting 50$ decrease here in canada for the MBA to match US price. But uf they are true the upgraded ram and SSD would eat into their profit margins too much to lower the price, they make a lot of money off ppl paying 100$ TO UPGRADE TO 4GIGS RAM.
