iPad Mini 2

Retina display

Friday, November 1

THIS is the tablet I've been waiting for.

Before Christmas? I'm shocked.

Actually, the best part of this story is the photo. I really want to see the new Mac Pro between an iPad and iPad mini. 0.4" taller and narrower than the large iPad. That's mind blowing. Somebody has to come up with a cool, creative way to get these into rack mounts.

I'm finding in the past few years Apple has been late on upgrading to the latest chipset technology.... Haswell has been out since June, and Apple used to get first dibs at unannounced technology and chips from Intel...

MacBook Airs with Haswell have been out since June, iMacs are out now. Considering Apple Engineers their own boards, I would like for them to have time to test and tune, as opposed to releasing rushed, and poorly designed systems.

While I agree it feels long waiting for the MacBook Pro update, I am hoping they have things figured out and built correctly.

In time for the holiday, lots of people would buy s***load of this.

I'm gonna get the new ipad for sure.

The thing I'm most curious about is the MacPro pricing. I really don't have a clue what the price range could be. Being assembled in USA throws a monkey wrench into any speculation on price.

November 1st is a holiday in parts of Germany - so the 5 nearest Apple Stores are closed and UPS is not delivering. I really hope this rumor is true and they launch the new retina iPad Minis on Oktober the 31st.

Hm, they are not exactly going out on a limb here.
- The iPad event is already known (anyway, the chances of Apple letting the Christmas shopping season go by without update to their iPads is very small)
- Mac Pro was already announced for this year.
- There are serveral things coming together to point to new MBPs soon.

My 2009 iMac died (technically the graphics card is dying, either way the cost of service isn't worth it), and I'm really considering a Mac Pro. I just want to know if I have a remote chance of getting one with a display for $3Kish.

If $3,500 is $3Kish then I'd say you have a decent chance since that's the price of the current entry-level Pro with Apple display. Of course you can go cheaper with a non-Apple monitor.

Some people are predicting a higher entry-level price given that it will have an SSD and two "workstation class" GPUs (on top of a pricey CPU).

It's going to be hard to get a Retina iPad Mini at first. I'm sure it will involve waking up in the middle of the night to order online.

... if they have pre-order. iPad 2 didn't have pre-order and since I refuse to stand in line, I had to wait three long weeks after ordering it online.

I definitely will order the new iPad mini (my daughter took over my current iPad mini) - but I rather wait a few more weeks than standing in line or setting the alarm for 3am EST. I will probably pre-order when I get up (5am EST), if I am lucky I get it within a few days, worst case, I wait a few more weeks (It is great to have, but not essential for survival)

I know, it's more wishful thinking on my part. I'll probably go with a less reflective and more reasonably priced monitor from a 3rd party. I'm wondering what the external drives/etc. cost is going to run on these.

I wouldn't count on any version of this machine being less than $2,499. As far as displays, the current ACD costs $999. If they release a 4K display, expect that to run at least $1,999.

Drives you can spec out now. Chances are its going to take a couple of months for 3rd parties to come out with TB2 devices, so get a good TB1 RAID and you'll be good to go.

I'm in video production, so I will be investing in a large TB2 RAID when they come out, but for now my current TB1 RAIDS are serving me very well.

It's not a problem creating Haswell laptops. The problem is to keep up with supply/demand. Apple has major problems supplying Retina displays, and this is probably the reason to post-pond the release of the Pro series. Apple would love to release it when people are going back to school, but that didn't happen.

With an Apple display? Dream on. It wouldn't surprise me if the base model price is close to $3K, even though there's so much less material required to build it.

I completely agree. My guess is that a barebones nMP will be in the $2,499 to $2,799 range and that's for the 8 core model with a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM and the base dual Firepro video card option.

We'll have to see how much of the internals can be upgraded but given the completely unique design I'm guessing that if you don't specify some of the options as BTO you'll be out of luck down the road. This is likely going to drive many of us (myself included) to opt for more mid-tier models that will push the price closer to $4k.

As for the ACD, I'm still holding out hope for a 4K matte display...or at least the matte display is an option. As I've said before, they made such a big deal about the nMP being capable of pushing up to 3, 4K displays and editing 4K video that it seems weird to me that after all that teasing, they wouldn't offer such a beast. That said, a 4K display in the 32" range is going to set you back between $2,500 and $3,000.

So, for a mid-tier nMP and 4K display (if released), I'd say around $6,500 should do it. My 2008 MP and ACD has carried me well for more than 5 years. If a nMP and ACD go the same distance at the price mentioned above I'm looking $3.50+ a day for cost of ownership.

The USA is very competative at automated manufacturing. It seems like the new Mac Pro might fit that well. If there are parts that could best be done with human labor, those parts can be manufactured in other countries then shipped here for efficient automated assmebly. Actually, I'm sure most if not virtually all the parts will be manufactued in other countries.

I hope the MBP update is more than just a Haswell upgrade. They could have done that months ago. New design? New colour? Touch ID? etc.

OS X Maverics

I was expecting new retina at WWDC 2013. I've bought the 13" Feb 2013 model a month ago and now I'm expecting them as early as WWDC 2014,

BUT, COME OOON

GIVE ME THE OS X Mavericks ! :D

thinking...

would it make sense that:
- in Nov 2013 Apple update the rMBP just like the MBA (PCI Express-based flash storage, 802.11ac "Gigabit" Wi-Fi, Haswell), and
- in mid 2014, Apple introduce a new line-up of MBAs and rMBP and kills the traditional MBP?

… however, what I am really hoping for is a major Software overhaul for iWork (!!!), Aperture (really? oh yeah!), and iLife.
