Apple's icloud removed my documents folder. Which had 55 sub folders. Evidently I will have to create all those folders again, to select all from the folders on the icloud, in order to get the data back to my macbook pro.

What fun Apple has become.

NOT
not the topic here, but either way... call apple. that is not typical, at all...

The whole "iCloud" concept is in its infancy and IMHO not to be trusted. You do have your document folder backed up, don't you? As on a CCC backup disk? If not get it soon, for a free 30 day trial.
infancy? icloud has been around for over a decade, and lots of people use it (i don't for 'documents & desktop'), but do for syncing notes, contacts, calendars, etc etc.

The fact that the prior post showed a person who lost his files in the iCloud shows a certain degree of "infancy" if you will, certainly it shows just how much you can trust it. Your concept of a decade being a long time shows just how different our concepts of time are. That is not to cast any shade on you at all, you are definitely welcome to your opinion. For me, the whole idea, the entire concept, of putting my files in the cloud and considering them safe, is unthinkable. I felt that way a decade ago, and that's how I feel today. In Japanese, Iya da (No thanks, I don't like that!).

you're welcome to your opinion as well. but millions of people use icloud, cloud services like dropbox, cloud backups like crashplan... and life goes on. and a decade, in computer years... is a very long time.

finally, i keep my files on my mac, on a backup drive, and online (thru idrive). the idea of keeping my files in one place is unthinkable...

Keeping Documents and Desktop in iCloud Drive is pretty new. I've found it to be reliable, for the most part. There are times that it gets stuck and refuses to download or upload a file. I think I've always concluded that it's due to conflicts where the file has been modified on more than one computer. There are other times that the icons showing the status of a file or folder is wrong. Finally, it's pretty slow keeping things sync'd compared to Dropbox. For example, if I walk over to my scanning computer and scan something to my desktop, I sometimes have to wait a minute till it shows up on the computer where I'll work with the scan.

Created an account here just to reply :) Hey everyone, I have a temporary fix for you.

For a file giving you the error "blah blah can't be found" when you try to open it, right click the file and choose Duplicate. Now trash your duplicate and try to re-open the original file. It will open normally.

Something about making a duplicate seems to fix the original file. Weird?

There is no need to create a duplicate...
After seeing that error I just click OK, then open the file again and it just works the second time.

In my case, duplication may work but the number of files that have to be dealt with makes this cumbersome throughout the day (and is ridiculous...this is a basic function) and also it does not open for over a minute the second time on most machines, and in some cases never opens.

still happening for me occasionally, but every single time, clicking on the file a second time opens in immediately...

I assume you are on the latest macOS beta. Are you also running Dropbox or any other cloud storage?

nope, all files are on my mac(s).

happens mostly when i move something; if i move 'folder A' to another location, then go to open a file in that folder... am likely to get the error.

seems to be some kind-of index update issue (anyway, just a thought)...

It's a launch services problem. Since it's so easy to reproduce, I was able to capture in the logs, using the "log" command at the shell.

Great job. Does Apple have this info?

I had to restart to access the files , this has happened a few times !!

Ventura is buggier than an ant hill
they didn't open on a second attempt to click on them? (just curious; this behavior has been reported on this thread).

just updated to the latest beta yesterday (15 march); will see if the problem re-occurs here...

I guess you're asking me if I reported the issue to Apple - I haven't. Other issues plague me more and I don't even follow through on those; only if there's no workaround do I call them. It's a bit of a time sink to call them; I guess I'm a bit lazy.

Regarding this problem, though, since it's so easy to reproduce, if Apple has even looked at it briefly, they've certainly checked to logs and have seen what I've seen.

Since you're so polite, if you really insist, I'll call it in.

It really is. But, most of the bugs I see other people wouldn't even notice. And, so far, I've only not been able to work around one bug: the smb file sharing bug.

For me, the key to happiness when using Apple software is lowered expectations. I just try not to be annoyed and focus on just how much I enjoy the OS - which I do.

I'm not in the camp that feels Apple is not working hard on MacOS. I just think they're doing so many fancy things that they break the things the seem, on the surface, to be simple. Their ambition is beyond their abilities.

I've been getting this off and on as well. It happened a few times a couple weeks ago, then went away, and now seems to be back.

Pretty sure every time it's happenened it's been a file inside a folder I have synced with Adobe Creative Cloud, so I'd been assuming it's some kind of glitch with that.

I have also noticed that the error goes away for me completely once the file has been successfully opened once. That is to say, I double-click it once, get the error, dismiss the error, then when I double-click it a second time it opens successfully. Always on the second time. And then, subsequent to that, I can open it as many times as I want, normally. This makes me think it has something to do with files that are synced via a cloud service -- as if it's only been partially downloaded or something.

Can anybody confirm seeing this error in a folder that is NOT synced through iCloud, Dropbox, Creative Cloud, etc?

I can confirm that.

Since I installed the Ventura update 13.1, this weird glitch has been happening.
When I open a folder on my desktop and try to open a file within the folder, I get
a message that says whatever file I'm trying to open "can't be found" If I try again to
open it a 2nd time, it opens fine with no issues. Is anyone else having this issue?
If so, did you find a way to fix it? It's nothing major but is a bit annoying
I have had this on my 16" M1 Pro, I had a load of warnings previously about launch items which may, or may not have been related. Only happened a couple of times, but cleared down caches, and forced Spotlight to re-index. Not had the problem since. Apple have this regarding forcing spotlight to reindex: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201716
Good luck

my observation (here, anyway); it's definitely the result of changing or moving something.

i just renamed a folder, then went to open a file in that folder... and got the error. a second double-click opened the file. it's like spotlight is not updating instantly...

Have you found that if you wait, then it works the first time you try to open the file? I seem to remember I tested that and got the problem even after waiting 5 seconds or so. I can't reproduce that at the moment and have to get to work. I will test further later.

Regarding indexing - I wonder if turning off indexing would make the problem go away or make it worse - another thing to test. :)

not sure (about the wait); will check it next time i move or rename something... anyway, reported (again!) in the feedback app.

EDIT: easy to duplicate. i change a folder name, double-click a file in that folder... 'file not found'. just went to open a file in that folder (5 minutes later) and got the error. ugh
