For ***** and grins I'm configuring this "amazing" Z1 right now. A "Linux Workstation A1H69AV-1"

$2700, for an ancient i3 processor with HD2000 graphics and old-gen SATA. And it weights more than double - literally, more than double - an iMac.

Yeah, that's a winner...

Lets see, the one I am looking at. For me? Price does not matter.

Has a Xeon E3 xeon 1280, Quadro 4000M Graphics, 32 gigs of ram, 300gb solid state, and a 2TB hard drive, Blu Ray Burner, with tons of software included.

So hardware wise, blows away the iMac for what I'll use it for. And it weighs more? Who cares? It sits on a desktop.

And unlike an iMac, where you take it to an Apple store so they can rape you, its 100% toolless, I can replace anything I want without tools.

Cya Apple, I'll come back when you make a real computer.

Also, I am disappointed that Apple has begun leaving the Mac behind in favor of the toys. I understand the toys now make up most of their revenues, etc., but it just isn't right. And no, I don't want a damned iOS touchscreen MBP or iMac, Apple.

So you don't think someone who had an iMac at home before the iPhone or iPad came out that only used it for browsing, email, minor applications like word processing, minor gaming, social networking, some music and some videos wasn't using a 'TOY' then but as soon as they switched to a device that made more sense for them like the iPad or the iPhone, that now, they are buying toys?

These so called 'toys' are computers and get the job done for a lot of people for their needs, especially many in the business word and sales word. Technology evolves and the desktop PC is dying. That's life.

The Z1 is what the iMac 'should' be.

But comparing price/specs on the Z1 to the 500+ year old iMac is kinda dumb. Why dont you do that in a few days if the new iMac is released..then you can compare specs.

Um...the iMac is 500 days old. Of course the Z1 blows it away hardware and spec wise. Come back in a few days and if the new iMac is released you can then compare spec for spec. Doing though on a 500+ day old machine is kinda silly.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out... :p

G51989 is never going to be happy with any Apple product, he's just here to throw a tantrum.

I won't, thats probably 4,000 dollars that Apple wont have :(

Don't put words in my mouth you silly little person :p

I love my 2011 iMac, sure it has flaws. As every product does. And its broken down a couple times. But overall, for what I use it for? I love it. And I've owned/still own over a dozen Macs, liked most of them to.

Sorry I don't think Apple products are flawless gifts from god :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Is HP still making consumer PCs? Or did their latest CEO decide to exit the business? :p

And you're going to throw a tantrum and buy an HP, with an iMac refresh right around the corner?

Yeah, sure, whatever.

HP makers some great computers, sorry to bust your bubble.

And no, its not a tantrum, its me liking to do my job.

We've got a data center full of HP servers, but I wouldn't trade my home computer for a Windows PC. OTOH, if a Blu-ray player in your home AIO is what will make you happy, then what are you hanging around here for? Apple was never going to bake Blu-ray DRM into their core OS anyway.

i3 is what what the iMac should be?

18 month old low power Xeons is what the iMac should be?

Expensive, heavy and unreliable is what the iMac should be?

Ok...

----------

This I had to laugh at..

HP makes high quality pro servers, and they are priced accordingly.

Of course, this "price doesn't matter crowd" isn't looking at those, surprise surprise. They're looking at the consumer stuff, which is the same generic poorly built crap shipped by every other company losing money in the PC game.

The design and upgradability. Not the specs.

I agree their servers are solid. The ones we use haven't had a single issue (other than HDs dying) since they were powered on over two years ago. Their consumer products especially laptops absolutely suck though. At the office we use HP EliteBook laptops which have been solid but look and feel very out dated. I like the little keyboard light which is completely useless.. LOL

Oh, so we're back to "design".

You guys aren't so much spinning in circles, as you are circling a drain. :)

I've always said that the iMac should be 'upgradable' like the Z1....you can search through my posts on this site. When the Z1 was revealed..my reply has always been..'what the iMac should be'...

That is the flaw of the iMac. No way to upgrade the graphics card/gpu nor other components.

Im sorry but Apples laptops do not suck. Get off the crack.

The idea of having full HD (from blu-rays) on a home theater PC is rather appealing, it may be lazy, yet being able to click anything you want quickly is nice. Even more so with episodes, entire seasons and you can jump to whatever you want instead of finding the correct disc, not like it is hard, we all like simple and easy these days.

I doubt there will be a time when I am ever comfortable with digital movies, just too costly, of course I will not even buy the blu-rays for that much, I need to make my entertainment dollars stretch a lot.

I did purchase a Doctor Who season once in HD, not as good as blu-ray yet it was ten dollars while the seasons were forty dollars plus, so that was the right pricing, at ten dollars I really do not care there is no resale value, I do wish it did not have that annoying DRM on it.
Yeah, it's definitely easy. I'm a digital man myself, and I'm very happy that Apple has enabled iTunes in the Cloud for movies in Australia, as I can download all the movies I've bought previously, and I can even download 1080p versions (if they exist) for the "HD" movies I've bought.

If only they would drop the prices now. Some are $30 but only $20 in the US.

I get that perspective, but I do also understand the desire to make an essentially non-upgradeable device as well.

IMO the real hole here is the lack of a mini tower or "fat mini" or headless iMac or any of the dozen other monikers its had over the years.

Well if you would have read the entire post you would have understood that I was talking about HP consumer laptops.. thanks for the insult though no i'm not currently on any drugs..

So, your saying high end HP machines are garbage?

I like how you threw in "High End" like that makes them the best.. and the words "garbage" were never typed. If you read my other post you would have read how I feel about them.

I don't really care which Apple products consumers choose to purchase or replace. It's their choice. I simply don't think Apple should ignore their desktop/pro line--a radically redesigned iMac or Mac Pro sometime soon would be wonderful.

However, I'm under no illusion that they are (right now) anything more than scaled-down computers with many more constraints. The iPhone is a luxury item with many cheaper substitutes; the iPad is just a pure toy. And it's fun.

I respect your opinion, and you have some points, but let's all just chill...:)

They say that because they think apple is god and everyone will follow. Like I said in another post. Wait till their cloud gets hacked and see if they trust it again

JameS

Wait till your house burns and all your DVD copies are destroyed.

You'll be praying for a cloud backup.

Yeah, Intel finally added native USB 3.0 support in their chipset for the Ivy Bridge Intel processors.

Surprising, really, that these haven't been refreshed already if that's the only update.

FINALLY!! USB 3.0 will be amazing! That is the only reason I have held off for so damn long on buying one of these iMacs

That Z1 of yours is not a "high end" machine in anything but price and obesity.

It's a Xeon equipped computer with a mobile Q4000 graphics card with upwards of 32GB ECC RAM. It's not the absolute bleeding edge of the latest and greatest in computer technology, but it's definitely more a Mac Pro than it is an iMac.

And who cares how thick an AIO desktop is? I can understand thinness being an issue with a laptop, but you'll never be moving this thing around. It'll always be in your house, sitting on your desk.

You're only griping and calling it crap because you want to gripe and call it crap.

Funny how these guys are calling you old and saying you should be "shed" by Apple, like they know anything about :apple:'s business model...

You mean the same business model that went like this:
Snow Leopard - DVD Only
Lion - Download and USB Flash Drives (they caved)
Mountain Lion - Download Only

As you can see, Apples business model is digital. How will buying the program on disc where they get 0% of help them when they can nab 30% from the App store?

Guess you don't know their business model that well?
