I downloaded the not-so-real release, installed and it just went back and said "Restore" at which point iTunes downloaded the real version (I hope) and is installing it now.

I don't think that is fair to say it was a botched rollout. Apple didn't roll anything out early. (I don't want to drive a wedge here but . . .) if it weren't for people's impatience, and waiting to download it properly though itunes, there would be not as big a problem (plus the server's probably wouldn't be so overburdened).

I think he was pointing to the activation servers being down most of the day. IMHO, this was a botched rollout. Apple knew how many phones were shipped, how hyped it was, etc... They should've released firmware yesterday for all current owners to get prior to the new phones coming onto the market. Instead they let their servers get hammered and leave many people without phone service all day.

So you didn't get the "requested resource not found" error when you hit "restore" ?

I also have the iTouch and cannot find where to download/buy the software in itunes. I've looked almost everywhere and can't seem to find it, so I'm probably missing something/not seeing it. Can anyone help me find and install the new iTouch software?

Going through the exact same trouble. No-one seems to care about the iTouch!!!!!!!!!! Grrr
What im doing at the mo is restoring iTouch, but that dont seem to have done a lot of good to be honest, cos now it's re-syncing everythin, which is gonna take forever. All i can suggest is just keep going on 'check for update', until apple starts paying attention to us.

Had pre-release, used this one, works perfect. It's updated and restoring from my last back up now.

Kudos.

Am I the only one who didn't have any problems at all upgrading to the leaked firmware yesterday on my original iPhone? I'm still running everything quite fine, and I'm not so sure it's even worth going through the updating process again.

I updated yesterday too, the only issues I have are those with apps shutting down upon launch, but it's fairly rare.

Phone side seems the same as ever ... still have EDGE and Wifi works, so *shrug*.

Someone mentioned slightly sluggish interface when scrolling, but it's 100% fine on mine.

You have to admit, this was one botched rollout.

You are blaming Apple because:

1. someone read the itunes source code and extracted the link for unreleased firmware without knowing exactly what products that firmware supported
2. you 'stole' that unreleased firmware from Apple and installed it on your iphone
3. the firmware was later found to be incorrect for your model iphone and/or didn't work properly on your iphone
4. you had to install the CORRECT firmware once Apple officially released it and offered it to you.

Now who did the botching, exactly?

I'm thinking I'm going to continue using the one I downloaded yesterday. There's no reason (really, give me one) to re-flash the phone with the "official" version if everything I want to do with what I have now is already working.

OK... be nice now, I go into iTunes (after backing up of course) and the update says I have the current update 1.1.4? What the heck? So I tried to restore thinking this would trigger at least something telling that it couldn't update to 2.0 right now. I restored alright... right back to 1.1.4. Is there some super, secret handshake I'm supposed to be doing?

i'm pretty sure we're talking about the server going down from the massive influx of activation traffic.... no the firmware.

I don't understand your logic. All the people who upgraded early yesterday would then not be upgrading today with all the 3g people. Apple should have officially allowed all iPhone 1.0 users to upgrade yesterday, it would have help

I upgraded yesterday, and I've just replaced it with the latest software.

Everything worked fine first time, including re-activation. No dramas. It sounds like things are starting to get back to normal now.

Quick Question

What do you do with this New file after you have downloaded and installed it? After it downloads to my desktop (and after I have installed it of course) is it save to trash it or does it need to be stored somewhere? Thanks

I'm glad the link to the correct update has been posted. I have been getting the strangest error message when I try to do a restore. Anyone else experience this message or know whether it might be related to the unofficial 2.0 firmware?

Same problem here. I can do the manual install again with the new updater. But it would be cool to get iTunes to pull it down and have everything "feel" all official ;)

Anyone else had this issue and successfully overcome it?

Cheers

LOL. Love the paranoia. Today's is snappier than yesterdays. Hilarious. How different do you think the hardware is between the two phones? Not much! It's the same build. I'd love to see a diff of the files on my phone vs. your phones after you've spent all this time re installing the same files on your phone again from the 1,1 package. Have fun! I'm gonna get back to using my phone.
Regardless of your incredulity, I can also confirm that I had slowness issues with the 1,2 package on a 1,1 iPhone, that was cured by installing the 1,1 firmware. The sluggishness was immediately noticeable after installation of the 1,2 firmware, but I just wrote it off as the usual "new OS, slower performance" thing we get from Apple. I'm very happy that installing the correct firmware has fixed it.

Early 2.0 Install OK for Me

I installed the early release of 2.0 to my 1stGen iPhone last night at 11pm PDT and it all went perfectly, including the re-activation. It restored my contacts, calendar & notes, but I had to re-sync for my photos, music and videos, which I expected.

I immediately went to the App Store and downloaded Remote -- the coolest household application ever! Ran all around the house at midnight, giggling like a girl, playing our shared libraries through all the various sound systems in the house, until everyone screamed at me to go to bed. I'm going to retire my 1stGen iPhone to being a handy-dandy remote control for the house.

Surprisingly, everything works great -- email, web, PDF's, SMS. I've been reading about other's problems, though, and feel I dodged a bullet. I know I was taking a chance, but I did it anyway. Damn my impatience!

Since it is working fine for now, I'll wait a few days before I install the proper version of 2.0.

and i STILL wont have the freakin upgrade afterwards....
WONDERFUL!!

Welp it worked but my backup didnt sync. I hit cancel and now I have no backups hehe..

Oh well gonna just resync. I guess i lost my notes and wifi passwords.

Oops nevermind.. if you option click he device you can select a restore point, i think im good

I'm still waiting for Apple to officially release the iPod touch's 2.0 firmware through iTunes. I don't want to install it myself and screw anything up, so I am still waiting, but I leave to New Hampshire and then Maine in about an hour and won't be home until next Friday night, and even if I did bring my computer with me, neither of the places have any internet connection.:( Maybe I'll bring it with me and find a free-wifi spot at some restaurant or something, but where I am going doesn't have much for high-speed-internet so probably no wifi. I just wish they were more well prepared for this release, they had to have known that their servers were going to take a massive hit.

I upgraded to the 2.0 firmware yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to find that although it isn't GPS, I was still getting live tracking when i was getting directions on my maps. Is this just because of the version that I downloaded? Is anyone with the official 2.0 software getting the tracking on the original iPhone?

yeah I noticed that when I had 5A345

Good to hear, I'm waiting to get home to crossload 1,1.... 1,2 seems sluggish on my original iPhone

I'm not sure that the early downloaders loaded the system down. I think it was all the EDGE iPhone, iTouch and 3G iPhone users who tried to download as soon as 2.0 was released. And if that caused the issues, then something was botched.

Does anyone know if this applies to downloading from the iPhone as well?

I downloaded apps prior to 2.0, then installed 2.0 this morning, but didn't have time to actually upload the apps to the iPhone (due to the whole "Accessing iTunes Store" debacle).

If I redownload them from the actual phone, will they still be "free"?

You go through the whole buy process. And at the end it says you have previously purchased this software. Would you like to download it again for free.

They should do this with itunes songs as well. I lost some yesterday cause i didnt cable sync my iphone for a month. (Beta testing iphone firmware with my corp for a 2 months.)
