I downloaded the not-so-real release, installed and it just went back and said "Restore" at which point iTunes downloaded the real version (I hope) and is installing it now.

I don't think that is fair to say it was a botched rollout. Apple didn't roll anything out early. (I don't want to drive a wedge here but . . .) if it weren't for people's impatience, and waiting to download it properly though itunes, there would be not as big a problem (plus the server's probably wouldn't be so overburdened).

I also have the iTouch and cannot find where to download/buy the software in itunes. I've looked almost everywhere and can't seem to find it, so I'm probably missing something/not seeing it. Can anyone help me find and install the new iTouch software?
Am I the only one who didn't have any problems at all upgrading to the leaked firmware yesterday on my original iPhone? I'm still running everything quite fine, and I'm not so sure it's even worth going through the updating process again.
You have to admit, this was one botched rollout.
You are blaming Apple because:
1. someone read the itunes source code and extracted the link for unreleased firmware without knowing exactly what products that firmware supported
2. you 'stole' that unreleased firmware from Apple and installed it on your iphone
3. the firmware was later found to be incorrect for your model iphone and/or didn't work properly on your iphone
4. you had to install the CORRECT firmware once Apple officially released it and offered it to you.
Now who did the botching, exactly?

I'm glad the link to the correct update has been posted. I have been getting the strangest error message when I try to do a restore. Anyone else experience this message or know whether it might be related to the unofficial 2.0 firmware?
Regardless of your incredulity, I can also confirm that I had slowness issues with the 1,2 package on a 1,1 iPhone, that was cured by installing the 1,1 firmware. The sluggishness was immediately noticeable after installation of the 1,2 firmware, but I just wrote it off as the usual "new OS, slower performance" thing we get from Apple. I'm very happy that installing the correct firmware has fixed it.LOL. Love the paranoia. Today's is snappier than yesterdays. Hilarious. How different do you think the hardware is between the two phones? Not much! It's the same build. I'd love to see a diff of the files on my phone vs. your phones after you've spent all this time re installing the same files on your phone again from the 1,1 package. Have fun! I'm gonna get back to using my phone.
will erase my SMS messages ? Thanks.
OK... be nice now, I go into iTunes (after backing up of course) and the update says I have the current update 1.1.4? What the heck? So I tried to restore thinking this would trigger at least something telling that it couldn't update to 2.0 right now. I restored alright... right back to 1.1.4. Is there some super, secret handshake I'm supposed to be doing?![]()

Is this just because of the version that I downloaded? Is anyone with the official 2.0 software getting the tracking on the original iPhone?

Does anyone know if this applies to downloading from the iPhone as well?
I downloaded apps prior to 2.0, then installed 2.0 this morning, but didn't have time to actually upload the apps to the iPhone (due to the whole "Accessing iTunes Store" debacle).
If I redownload them from the actual phone, will they still be "free"?
