Thanks for the input. Just one question, does your new SSD make a bit more noise than the original one? In my case, when I had the 1TB, I couldn’t hear anything, but with the new ones (4+4=8), I do notice some sound when the drive is working.
There wasn't any noticeable coil whine and I only used the existing back cover. I've since moved it under the desk so can't easily listen to it. Here's the audio spectrogram instead. The test occurs between the two double taps and went through a couple of read/write cycles.

I can hear it in your video, although I had to boost the volume to do so. Spectrogram (blue/red colour scheme) attached as well.

Do Polysoft Studio Drive M2 modules work in M4 Mac Studio?

Hi everyone,

I backed the Polysoft Studio Drive Kickstarter and bought the 8TB M2 modules for my Mac Studio. I’ve been holding off installing them because I need to know if they are compatible with the newer M4 Mac Studio.

I asked the creator (Gilles) directly but haven’t received a reply, and there’s not much clarity on the official pages. I saw some past comments where Polysoft mentioned they were testing compatibility with M4, and possibly considering an exchange program, but I haven’t seen any final confirmation.

So my main question is: Does anyone here know if the M2 Studio Drive modules (especially the 8TB ones) work in an M4 Mac Studio?

If you have installed one or have first‑hand experience, please share what you found (firmware issues, compatibility, booting, etc.). Thanks in advance!
I asked a similar question and Guiles replied with a very detailed answer in this very thread.

Sadly, its buried somewhere, I will try to find it but try your luck with the search function.

Update got an ups shipment notification from polysoft, not sure if it’s a tactic to extend the wait time but let’s hope it’s not too long.
@djm16385 Did you ever see any further movement on your order? Looks like you placed it Dec 21 so a ship notice on Jan 13 seems like a pretty good turnaround time compared to others I’m seeing in this thread…

Hey everyone, hate this is my first post here but I'm getting to wits end with Polysoft and hoping to get some help or maybe a response from Gilles here. I purchased the 8TB kit for my M2 Max Studio back in June of 25. Everyone knows the story of delays etc. I reached out a couple times and got some feedback about it being delayed and asked if I was willing to wait.

Long story short I waited, received my kit on 12/23/25 and proceeded to install. I am not sure if there is a difference in the M1,M2,M3,M4 kits but what I received had an instruction booklet for the M4. Assuming this was just updated literature I proceeded with the install and received this error. "The Mac "Mac" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (35). 064E.0023". I installed the drives as labeled with 00 on the left and 01 on the right. I restored my studio with the original drive successfully, reinstalled the drives in the opposite orientation assuming they were labeled incorrectly and received the same error. I tried this back and forth multiple times and the only success I've had was getting more proficient at completing it and successfully restoring with the original drive.

I reached out to Gilles and sent the photo of the error and waited a few days due to the holiday. I have reached out multiple times and I have not gotten a response on this yet. Maybe someone here can assist with me possibly completing the install incorrectly. Any insight is appreciated.
Legit I think you may have been sent my kit—I asked for an M4 8TB kit, the kit arrived with an instruction booklet that said M2 on it but I figured the instructions must not have changed, but I got the same error message you did. I emailed Gilles direct, did you ever get a response from him?

Unfortunately no status update its the same "On the Way Cleared Customs" really strange since it doesn't say did it ship or still at polysoft. The delivery date will be provided as soon as possible.

So you've got a legit UPS tracking number, and the status (when checking tracking via ups.com) shows it's through Customs? That would definitely confirm that it shipped, sounds you're just waiting on UPS to get their act together and get it moving out of their customs warehouse.

I put in an order on Dec. 12 for a 2TB/M1 SSD (before I read anything out here). No response yet after 4 messages sent asking for some sort of clarification. I can't tell if I should be in the queue Gilles mentioned in his 'next deliveries' queue mention in his Dec 18th update, or if I'm in an unknown length backorder.

@gilles_polysoft
Gilles? Hello?

I sent @gilles_polysoft several emails over the past few days regarding the error code I got when I tried installing the drives, "Error (35) 064E.023." I soon realized that even though I ordered the M2 8TB kit originally (last June no less) I had asked, and Gilles confirmed in the notes, to change it to the M4 8TB kit in messages sent in June and September. Both times he assured me this change to M4 was noted, even though for some reason my invoice hadn't changed. Sure enough, after waiting 6 months for this kit they still sent the M2 drives. The manual has "M2 Studio Drive" on it but I figured because the installation process must not have changed they just sent an older manual to save money. Came to this thread and soon discovered that the M4 manuals do exist...uh oh.

I tried to avoid this return/exchange scenario as much as possible but it's clear they're overwhelmed by the fabrication delays and the deluge of orders, at this point I understand that I'm likely going to wait another month or so for the correct kit but I just want a response to confirm they're aware.

So… it hasn’t actually cleared customs according to that screenshot? And with no UPS updates since the 6th…? Interesting, maybe marking things as shipped is indeed an extra delaying tactic 🤔
The kit has not left polysoft either. It clearly states that the courier only received a notice that a shipment is being prepared. The tracking will update the info when the courier receives the package, and then proceed to deliver it to the customs control, for international shipping.

Yeah I was just confused because the status of "On the Way Cleared Customs" that djm16385 mentioned should only happen once UPS actually has a package, but then the screenshot obviously reflects a different status 🤷

Wish you all the best trying to get it returned for the correct SSD.

It’s strange—I tried to track it, and it says it’s clearing customs. However, the detailed information at the bottom shows what I shared in the screenshot.

Well, regarding the sound issue, Polisoft replied that there are different types of power supplies, and one of them makes a sound with the SSD. They also said this doesn’t pose any risk during use, but since the noise is quite noticeable, they will send me an updated SSD in February.

We’ll have to wait…

The problem with that answer is that if you didn't have coil whine before the upgrade, then it stands to reason the only change you made is the cause of the sound.

Ah, I think I forgot to mention, since the sound was annoying, a few weeks ago I put the original Apple SSD back in, and it’s quiet again. It doesn’t make any noise with the Apple SSD

Ordered September 21st, arrived today. Even included some chocolate. Installation was easier than I was expecting. Hardest part was the bottom case screws being extremely tight, I thought I was going to break the screwdriver or strip the screws.

I ordered a Mac Studio M1 2 TB upgrade on Dec. 12; Polysoft did cash my payment, but that's all I know for now. They did not reply to my many emails. Some Internet sites suggest that Polysoft is in serious financial trouble, and they may even be out of business. It sounds like I just got ripped off for $539 CAD.

I ordered mine on the same day - before coming out here and reading about the delays. Seeing as people are still receiving their kits as recently as Thursday, I don't think they are out of business, just having a really hard time restocking and/or putting the kits together. For whatever reason, though, the complete lack of communication is unacceptable. If a vendor is running 4 months behind, they need to tell you that and make it easy for you to request a refund. Even the last update text Gilles put up on his site Dec. 18th is cryptic regarding what it means to anyone ordering now (or who had just ordered a few days before).

I know I'm at a point where I think I need to go through the laborious process of cancelling and getting a refund.

Thanks for your update. I already asked them to cancel my order, but they did not reply to that request either. Can you explain how one could apply for a refund since they don't reply to any email?

I haven't tried yet, though check backwards on these threads for people that have, and ask them. It still took them a while, from what I remember.
