POWER CONNECTOR

How do you guys intend on solving the different power connector issue thats different from PC 8800 GT from Mac 8800 GT?
I've read there are different power connectors.

I'd rather save some money and get the OC 8800 GT than the stock mac 8800gt. More speed, less money.

However, the nVidia GeForce 8800 GT only has a 64-bit EFI driver in its ROM so it will ONLY boot on a "2008" Mac Pro.

Being (as usual) a bit thick here, but : Have you allready tried the production 8800s in the machines, or is this all still speculation? Have anyone gotten hold on the cards? The first units are shipping to people on the 18th or something?

I have read all the possible material and I am still under the impression that no-one has had the units yet?

Sorry for being a bit numbskull.
I blame it on the flue...wich I dont have.

It'll be very bizarre if Apple strays from the usage of the 6-pin power connector.

I there hope?

In case you didn't notice, I was talking about college students, not people who are in business for themselves

For me my MP is a luxury. I bought it because I could afford it.Same with the new MBP I'll be buying for my college bound kid. She'd probably be fine with a MB. Oh well, silly me :D

BTW, I'm so glad I got my 2006 MP with the lowly Nvidia 7300 video card. I get a chuckle every time I hear the stories of people being on their second, third, or fourth ATI card. He laughs who laughs last :D

;) Yes I did notice, that is why I meant it to be more sarcasm as your where making a valid point. I too opted to the 7300 as I read all the horror stories of the ATI cards, but I thought Apple would come up with a better option for me in the short term. Looks like we could be SOL:mad:

BTW, is there anyone out there who knows how to backup the EFI of my current Mac?:cool: Also, the procedure or updating such peace of SW? I have access to a 2008 Mac Pro tomorrow, and I would like for educational purpose, test the EFI64 on my system?

Thanks!

Will try it next week!

I have been confirmed that my card shipped out Friday. I believe I should have it on Thursday of next week. Will confirm what happens then?

Well if it doesn't work you would have the possibility of frying your system....so even if i knew how to do that i wouldn't recommend it.

:confused::eek::D

I could be the case, but for what I do, I need the new GPU as faster or more CPU would improve my workflow. See here
that even with 2x the number of cores and a little extra speed, I would not gain anything in the Photoshop/Aperture environment I mostly use. I do generate some toom boon vids once in a while and I could gain some there.. but it is minimal as this is only minimal in what I do.

I just finished applying a set of filter to two very large images and it took nearly 45mins (HD had some impact) with my CPU cores never even passed the 50% mark... I am typing as I apply another batch of images another complex set of filters. Again CPU is minimal use... Now if I try to go to Aperture and browse, the application is slow (how slow you ask) that I give up and start to browse the web. Wish I had a better GPU:rolleyes: from :apple:!

Well i guess the best place to start would be looking at a EFI updater to see how those run.

I know this support doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346 is being held up as the answer but it is interesting to me that this is a support doc that fundamentally addresses forwards compatibility not backwards.

The heading specifically refers to using older G5 cards in newer Intel MacPro's and says you can't. I know it has a generic rider on the end about all cards only being compaitble with the family of MP that they shipped with, but that to me becomes ambiguous when a) it is in a support doc that is addressing something slightly different and b) is already proven incorect with the ATI2600 working in the older Mac Pros.

Still got my fingers crossed.

Obviously the problem exists (barefeats have an oficial telephone call directly from Apple. Is not working at this moment but we have still some time. After tomorrow, if we havent any answers to our problems we must cancel the order because finally we will must pay for the return to apple of the graphics card. :(

I hope no, because we must waiting a lot of time to receive the graphics card then still could be solved on time.

Actually if everyone orders their graphics card upgrade and then returns it once it has arrived, although its a little hassle for us individually, for Apple if everyone is doing it, it will be a pain in the posterior... it may just give them a little kick where needed to make them address the situation.

Do they have to refund shipping fees if the card does not work ?:eek::)

What are you people like?

They are addressing the situation. Let's wait and see, shall we.

*edit* OMG, I'm a 6502. At last, an avatar!

Same here, just got the confirmation from apple "on or before 22nd.jan" ,so the card should ship on next tuesday and be here wed/thur.
We have a race here!! :D

What machine (06,07?) did you have?

Intresting to see that apple store still dont point out in anyway when you order the card that you would need a e-08 machine...or leopard...dumbasses.

Well I've just had a call from Apple UK regarding my order for the 8800GT card, basically the same as other people have been having, stating that orders for the 8800GT have been blocked while they confirm with customers if their Mac Pro is compatible (ie, 'Old' Mac Pro = incompatible).

If Apple is going to the trouble of actually calling people then this card must be the official line regarding compatibility.

I really am disgusted with Apple, once again they put an arbitrary block on upgrades in order to ensure people who want this card have to buy a whole new Mac Pro. I will be writing to Apple's customer services to complain about this, I think it's an absolutely shameful practice.

Given the fact they're actually having to call every customer who buys one of these cards, do you not think they should update the product information page on the Apple store website to ease confusion? Oh no, that'd be too easy...

......After tomorrow, if we havent any answers to our problems we must cancel the order because finally we will must pay for the return to apple of the graphics card. :( ....

Don't see why I should pay for a return if I purchased the card online, there is no mention on the product or order page that it would be incompatible, and I have had no phone call from Apple to tell me either.

How do they know that I read this excellent forum..... ;)

Indeed I might even be asking them about compensation for my wasted time and effort and an interest charge for their use of my cash for several days.....! :D
