Was the box still plastic wrapped, or did you notice? Did you see any slices on the plastic or evidence that the shipping box and been retaped?

I didn't notice when it was first delivered, but upon close inspection, the box had been opened and retaped.

The iphone box itself had no shrink wrap. Also, the iphone box was rattling around inside the shipping box with minimal padding material.

Still waiting for ATT and UPS to call me back. So far, it's been nothing but buck passing from either party.

Well, no call from At&T like they promised. A call to customer support ended up as three transfers, 45 minutes on hold, and a guy who claimed he couldn't hear me (conveniently two min before the call center was supposed to close)

Next step is to try to call the ombudsman for the ATT CEO and the VP of customer service tomorrow. It's particularly frustrating when you can't even get the ball rolling.

It's probably this guy who stole it OP

Between the 'pre-order' fiasco and crap like this, there is NO way I will EVER pre-order from AT&T ever again! I bet any money that if you had ordered it from Apple, you'd already have a new phone by now!

I was just wondering how is this at&t's fault? Why are you not talking to UPS? Seems the phone was stolen from UPS not at&t.

sorry to hear that. this is ridicious!
why not just take the whole box....

this is why there r some pople selling on cragilist brand new without box...
really wtf.....

Just to counter all of the "I've had a lost shipment" stories that everyone always has, I've shipped thousands of boxes through UPS and FedEx both and honestly can't think of a time when a package got to the customer empty or was lost in shipment. Those are pretty damn good odds.

How can that be so? If an item is stolen during shipment, it doesn't matter who shipped it. Apple would be just as much at risk as AT&T is.

NYC- may be part of the problem

After the better part of the hour on hold with ATT (and three call transfers later), someone reading from a script told me that someone would call me in 24 hours about my "Lost or stolen iphone". She was clearly just clicking boxes on her computer screen and wouldn't deviate from her line or get me someone else to talk to.

The UPS guy certainly tipped me off to something being amiss. First, he showed up past 9:00PM. Then, he said that the package wasn't supposed to be on his route and that it had just "appeared" in his truck.

Are you sure he was UPS and not an independent? Was it home delivery.

I have had UPS deliver at 11PM, I have had them falsify tracking to show they were on time. At Christmas, I have had independents take packages home rather than return to the hub.

I have called and spoken to Hub managers who even when I have proof, defend the driver or say "Thats an independent and we dont control them".

I absolutely hate UPS.

BTW...did you sign for it? If so, you may be at fault for not having opened the package before signing. This is what UPS wants you to do though they wont tell you at the time you are signing.

I doubt that AT&T put an empty box in the shipping box and as you said it had been tampered so this is a UPS problem and not AT&T!

Problem is that there will have to be an investigation before it is replaced. If AT&T just sent out another phone with out an investigation, imagine how many nice people, here, would take advantage!:p

I pre ordered two 4S phones from Apple.com. One of them went missing, even though it was on the UPS drivers manifest for the day.

Turns out the device was stolen by someone at the UPS hub. Their security investigator recovered the box and packing material at UPS.

I am so glad I pre ordered from Apple rather than AT&T. Apple has been great. They sent me a free case for my phone ($40), and almost immediately sent me a replacement phone, due to arrive today. That's a pretty great and speedy response.

In summary, I couldn't be more disappointed with UPS, and I couldn't be happier with Apple.

Yes, but if Apple customer service is great and UPS customer service is crap, that makes one a better bet than the other.

Yes it's going to be a UPS problem, but as AT&T is the shipper they will need to file the claim.

The iPhone boxes are shrink wrapped from Apple so it's not an Apple issue. Problably got lifted at an Airport. You know those secure places where the make you take off your shoes and sexually assault you yet they have all these thieves working at them.

Man, you'd think someone somewhere along the line would have noticed the box weighs almost nothing without the iPhone in it.

The iPhone itself is very light. I don't think it would be that easy to tell, especially if its inside another shipping box with packing material.

Not really related, but UPS just left my $1,000 MacBook Air sitting on my doorstep yesterday even though their tracking said I had to sign for it. They made me sign for my MacBook Pro I ordered last year. They didn't even ring the doorbell or honk the horn like they usually do when they pull up. I rushed home from work to make sure I caught him, and I was sitting in the house. I went out to check the mail, and there it was on my doorstep. FedEx always makes me sign.

See above. I am talking to UPS. They can refund what I paid ATT, but they can't reset my upgrade eligibility and get me a new phone.

It's AT&T's fault because I paid them to deliver a phone to me. An empty box was delivered. I didn't choose the carrier- they did.

Are you sure he was UPS and not an independent? Was it home delivery.

Yeah, he had a UPS uniform and was driving a UPS truck.

If AT&T just sent out another phone with out an investigation, imagine how many nice people, here, would take advantage!

Probably not as many as you would think. Once the phone is reported missing, it can't be activated.

They did the same with my Macbook Pro and I've also had received empty boxes unfortunately. I try to avoid having anything shipped to me that's expensive. There are far too many dishonest people at the courier services these days.

It seems like UPS should be responsible for the cost of a non-contract device. It doesn't really matter that you only paid $199 (or more if you didn't get 16 GB), the device they lost costs $649 to replace.

But I agree this is on AT&T to deal with, they should be the ones filing the claim with UPS, not you. I've only ever not received something from a merchant once or twice, but each time I never had to deal with the shipping company, a replacement was simply shipped to me.

AT&T should be able to track it if somebody is activating it in US.

Your 4GS box should have the IMEI # at the bottom, I am guessing AT&T can use that information to track the phone.

Does suck, I went down early to o2 and grabbed mine their and then :) best way really to be 100%.

I really doubt that her iPhone wasn't shipped. That iJustine chick would do whatever to try to stay relevant cause her 15 minutes were up about 2 years ago.

Yes I vaguely remember that iJustine chick. She hasn't vanished into the oblivion yet?

UPS Stole My iPhone 4s in NYC

My new iPhone 4s was out for delivery all day Friday. By 9:00 pm I was concerned that something was not right. I called UPS and the CS agent told me that if it was on the truck it would be delivered that day, no matter what. At 12:00 midnight the UPS tracking website changed to "will be delivered by 10:30 am the next business day". I was pissed...Called UPS and CS agent told me she did not have a reason why he did not deliver. I live in doorman building so there is not a time when packages cannot be left. Someone is always here. When Monday came and still no delivery, the UPS website changed and said " Exception: The merchandise is missing. Your package is damaged and is being held and the UPS sorting Location." So I called UPS. They wouldn't tell me anything, other than there would be no delivery. That their contract was with Apple, not me, and that I needed to contact them. I contacted an Apple CS agent who told me Apple Loss Prevention would have to open a ticket, and I would not get a credit nor be eligible for a replacement until Apple LP signed off on it, and could be as long as 3-5 business days. I escalated it to a supervisor, who basically told me the same thing. She would try, but basically I was screwed. When I called her again today for a status update. She told me that Loss Prevention had opened a ticket, that it was stolen, but due to the volume of people in similar situations( IE: people whose phones got stolen) that it would take several more days before my account with ATT could be reset to allow me to get into the line to replace the stolen one...I am still surprised that someone at UPS stole my iPhone.
