look, if you agree with what someone said, than there is no reason to restate it and it's fine to just +1 it. Down voting, on the other hand, is different. If you disagree you ought to say why because, as a previous poster pointed out, there could be numerous reasons for disagreement.

Down voting isn't purely for a matter of "disagreement"- - you could simply not like what somebody has said.. Let's say that someone insults someone else, you can down vote their posting.. would you rather that everyone comments on it and is like "I don't like that you insulted that other guy!"

But the reasons for voting, up or down or sideways, are anonymous and up to the interpretation of the recipient or others.

If someone disagrees, they should be forced to say it or shut up, otherwise how will we get them to explode from all their unvented rage?

I'd like to see both up vote and down vote numbers separate. I like youtube has and other websites comments section.

you could just report it...

But anyway, at the very least, if they are going to end up going through with this idea, it has got to stay out of the politics and stuff...

This would actually be kind of cool, although it would take up some screen estate.
Or you could make users input Captchas to upvote or downvote—it might make people think twice about the implications/reasoning of their actions. ;)

Really hope down voting does not return. It was an ugly environment around the forums when it was available. when it was removed, the community seemed so much more positive. Don't know why the admins are trying to bring it back.

I like how Ars Technica did it. They show not just the total, but the actual counts in each direction.

If there's going to be down-votes at all, then I think both counts are important information. Without it, a harmless post and a very controversial post can both have totals at or near zero.

For example, a harmless post could have a single +1, while a controversial post could have -99 and +100, showing both strongly held views and a nearly equal division. Yet with only the totals shown, both posts only show +1. I can think of few things less transparent or informative. Even an upvote-only system is better than a total-only system.

And yes, I realize that feelings will be hurt when there are down-votes. I have no strong opinion on that either way. I only really care that if there are down-votes, that both counts be shown, not just the total.

That arstechnica system sounds brilliant, I've always wondered about controversial posts and the number of +'s and -'s they mightve got, despite only seeing a single number total at the moment. This wouldnt be a bad way to go.

I could go with out the down vote button. I already know the disagrements people have with me. People on here have no problem telling me they disagree with me...

EDIT: Also I think instead of 100 post for down vote somewhere closer to 1,000 or more is better.

The significance some attach to a simple innocuous up/down vote is mildly ammusing.

yeah, it's really bizarre. i mean it's so trivial...how it upset anybody is a mystery.

I'd rather see the votes gone entirely, but if there's one, there should be the other. And, I like the idea of showing the counts if they stay. And give us free beer. Because it's Friday!

Agreed. New members intending to mostly troll or annoy can spam up 100 posts in no time, but rarely persist to 1000 posts just for that. A 1000 post limit for the down vote button would make it less likely to be abused.

(Checks post count)

Agreed.

However, this means only a small number of people will be able to down vote as compared to up vote, it's going to skew things horribly.

Unless, of course, our down votes count as 5 down votes... ;)

I just noticed that it's now Saturday, and I didn't get a free beer or a down vote, and the up vote still exists.

For the record: :(

Why is it that some posts are down voted? I do not have access to this feature ... do you need a certain post count?

When they got enabled again all members could down vote, however for the moment it is limited to mods and admins.

Arn could implement a downvote-only option instead. That way, everybody will know how many people have downvoted a post, for whatever reason, for example: rain; pizza arrived cold; dog; Fox wasn't funny that day; yellow. Of course, this would once again encourage constructive discussions and would help different points of view emerge, thanks to the implicit nature of that button.

Hopefully Arn reads this before it is too late.
