Government out of public markets. This is a capitalist economy. Interfering with those markets is a risk no government should take. And need i add that the entire idea is the opposite of the current administration's "sink or swim" policies for citizens. Why not take a stake in the middle class instead of failing S&P 500 companies?

So, Intel and the US, will be what Huawei is for China?
Don't know about that, but I do know that if the government gets involved no mere mortal will be able to afford Intel chips, and they will not be secure. Look at what happened to NASA, the Post Office, license bureau, etc.

Good for them. I just saw the menu at Dino and Harry’s last night. I can’t even buy a stake in a steak! 😩

The US is not a true capitalist economy, it's a mixed economy and always has been.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Intel is going to end up as a quasi-gov entity producing chips for defense applications. But there is a genuine concern that all of us as consumers should have about one Western fab like TSMC having so much power. We should encourage investment into Samsung and Intel because I assure you that a world in which TSMC and SMIC are the dominant players is not ideal for us.

>>"Earlier this year, officials reportedly floated the idea of TSMC operating Intel's plants in a joint venture."

That's not a bad idea. To avoid having to fight to defend Taiwan, when China walks in Trump can nuke their fab plants to prevent China getting them, and then rely on TSMC chips made in Ohio.

Maybe before 2025. Not anymore. We're an Ayn Rand wannabe now.

Good point.

Trump isn't going to do jack, other than more worthless tariffs, if China heads into Taiwan.

I thought socialism was the disease that needed to be rooted out by the MAGA movement?

you've misunderstood. It's socialism for corporations and the ultra rich, and hard core capitalism for the rest of the people

In other words, it's an accumulation of wealth and power from the many to the few.

Well, as long as Apple keeps making their own chips / silicon, I don't care about Intel. They (Intel) have had their made-hay-while-the-sun-shone good times. I see them as a rear-view vision company. But if the US Govt wants to invest in them so be it. As long as it spurs on research and competition that will benefit consumers with more competitive prices, and better computing and technology solutions

The US probably just needs them to survive long enough so that chips can be made, and I mean all kinds of chips, to support the current, "stupid and outdated" architectures that are in place... think 80386 or even 8008! jk, but the next will be Microsoft (as they start to die in the 2 big 2 fail race" when the Government will need Windows support till 2040!

Can we get a do-over on this decade? It feels like we're up to our necks in stupid and about to drown in it.

I'd like a do-over from the 1990's on.

So much about the Internet and tech went in the wrong direction, straight away.

If one looks up the history and origin of the DMCA, for instance, one can see where it was all broken by vested interests right out of the gate.
