If we think about it, it makes sense. With over 70% of the chips being made in Chinese factories, it would be logical to have a US-based solution for national security. Why reinvent the wheel when you can invest in one of the largest and secure it as Made in USA?
That’s true from a security standpoint. What’s funny/odd/baffling about this is these are “Republicans” talking about it. Now, it’s clear to people paying attention that Trump isn’t really a Republican by any ideology (not that he has any), but still to have Republicans seriously talking about this shows how much the Republican Party is the party of Trumpism.

kind of over Intel getting my tax dollars, how many billions in revenue is this "dead man walking" making again?

Thing is intel is a US military contractor, and the whole reason AMD has an x86 license is so that they could act as an intel second source.

Without intel around, AMD would have no second source as an x86 supplier, so it is in the US military's interest to keep intel around - never ind the other reasons such as less reliance on TSMC offshore manufacturing for the tech sector in country.

Sure its USA tax dollars, but this really is a matter of US national security imho.

What's the difference? I own a stake in Apple. I own a in stake Chevron, Conoco, Wisconsin Energy. How would you invest in something without taking an ownership stake? Have Intel create a special class of bonds for the treasury to buy?

Keep government out of public markets. Period.

Unless it’s being marketed as a bailout. At least someone in power has learned something from the last financial crisis, albeit the wrong lesson.

So, we stopped the EV federal credit to do this..which probably still won’t happen for years even with funding from tax dollars..yea?!

That would be the definition of anarchy. It's terrible, but it's better than what we're calling government now.
Nope, that would be right sized government. If the government wants to tell me how to live my life, I will tell them where they can go. The government has no right to say anything.

This makes sense. Never should have allowed chip manufacturers to off shore.

Absolutely ridiculous! The right goes full communist. When the government starts picking winners and losers in the private sector, it's over for the market of innovation and free choice. We barely keep government tax breaks for corporations from destroying the country, and now they will hand out tax payer money to a failed company.
Nope, that is the left.

You got that right. If it doesn't benefit the billionaire class, he ain't interested.

Good thing you're nobody important. Because your ideas are straight out of the OathKeepers', Three Percenters' and the Boogaloos playbooks. If you were important you'd be dangerous!

I can see this happening; at the very least for national security reasons. They need state side chip manufacturing; even if its a couple generations old.

Even if an ally, taiwan is in a strategically poor location and with chip making as sensitive as it is; it wouldn't take much to disrupt the US chip supply.

What i can also see happening is 1000% tariffs on imported chips and now apple have to start using intel again 😆

...brought to you by the political party that, in the case of Solaris and Tesla (among others) said "Government shouldn't be in the business of picking winners".

What happens if a nationalist also becomes socialist and shows signs of dictatorship? Lessens to be learned from Europe. National Socialist American Workers Party?

This isn’t socialism, this is corporate welfare.
Socialism is when the government owns the means of productions. Which is what is proposed with Intel, among others.

Corporate welfare is when the government gives corporations financial assistance without taking an ownership stake.

This isn’t socialism, this is corporate welfare.

In this case it is national security.

Sure, intel should by rights go broke, however the US government can not afford to lose local semiconductor manufacturing when the only other source is Taiwan which is at massive risk to invasion by China.

China takes Taiwan and the US industry is screwed.

Throwing a couple hundred billion (f needed) at intel as a contingency is MUCH cheaper than a shooting war with China to regain semiconductor manufacturing.

So is the health of the populace but for some reason we can’t use tax dollars for universal health insurance
