Yup, did that last year when Apple messed up my delivery.
Learned to have a back up order in.
At least I get to do both the fun UPS tracking event with delivery and I have the "boring" in store pickup emails to wait for....
That battery life is scaring people away from it; everyone knows it (at least the enthusiasts who are ordering at 5am PT). It's simple physics and everyone wants battery life over anything else, hence why the 17PM are selling out...
Well I just placed a pick up order for a store 90 min away, guess I’ll make day trip out of it 
Hmm - I got on Veterans exactly at 8:00, did two orders and both went through quickly for pickup and delivery both on the 19th. Was annoyed we can't do the pre order but turned out fine at least for the base and air's we got.
Ok, got my Deep Blue 17 PM 512GB order in at 5:03 and confirm email at 5:05. But like a lot of people, got the Sep. 25 date. It has to be a glitch.
I've had every new iPhone every year since the first one. Only once missed launch day as I was away for work and was on road at time of order and the mobile signal was rubbish and couldn't order quick enough. I kind of love getting a new phone but I hate the whole order process though it has been a lot better in recent years.
The other thing that I hate is knowing I've got to put a screen protector on my new baby and I still feel like it's a dark art trying to do it without any bubbles or dust under it. Some years I crack it perfectly, others it's a **** show of multiple retries until it doesn't stick quite right and I give up. Lol
Oh I am fairly confident it will.
But I think this snafu is outside of the usual experience where some people got a later delivery date and it moved forward from years passed. It never showed a later delivery date the moment the store opened at 8 am. Always showed launch day delivery.
Also it is very strange that my local stores also showed zero availability at all. None. Not even pick up on a later date.
Depends on your choice of gamblling method.
You MAY get a shipping update during the next 7 days to an earlier slot.
But then you may not - so I always have a backup order via instore pickup.
My delivery says 9/25 and I get the fun task of monitoring UPS shipments across the Pacific (daily excitement).
My backup ISPU order says 9/19 but will have to wait for email updates from Apple (boring).
Correct. But I just ran through the iphone upgrade program for the first one and got the 9/25 shipping date. If I buy one out right and it shows up on the 19th, can I activate that one onto the iphone upgrade program and return the other one?
Hold for pickup was not an option last year where I live from UPS.

That's fair. But, I look at it as I have the 16 Pro now and the event stated it'll have at least that which I've adjusted to, although admittedly it's nothing like the battery on the PM.
17 Pro in any configuration still available for 9/19! I guess everyone wants the Max this year.
One of the only other people I see who got a base! I feel like people are sleeping on this - all the videos etc saying its the best base that's ever been made / best deal / edges out Air in lots of ways. I changed my mind about 10 minutes before ordering from the Air to a white base 8:15 am pickup lol
The stores wouldn't be out of appointments if the pre-order system wasn't fundamentally broken this year. Everyone that was waiting in the garbage queue got shown a 9/25 shipping date and immediately panicked and switched to the in store pickup. I would much rather have gotten shipping so it arrived with my AirPods instead of this broken, disjointed garbage can.
Whenever I choose ISPU it just changed me to Delivery (said unavailable, but it should be available lol), maybe because I used Apple Balance and GC as payment method.
Both Silver and Blue Pro Max are still available for launch day pick up at my local Apple Store and it's an hour after pre orders went live. The base model and Air models are also still available. The only ones that have slipped to October is the Orange Pro Max. This sees like a slow year for iphone sales.
Hoping this means my 9/25 dates improves…
