I kind of feel like, at least for the first generation of this product, that this adaptor should be included.

Agreed.

This new Macbook is just a steaming pile of adapter-required FAIL.

totally agree. Whoever thought one port was a good idea should be slapped. The original air had only one port, I thought they realized how badly that sucked when they added in a second one to the newer version. I would have rather had two of these ports and no headphone jack. Then at least they could just come out with a USB-C headphone adaptor and I wouldn't care because I could leave it connected to my headphones

----------

First, they came for our USB ports, and we did not speak out, for we had Bluetooth mice.

Then, they came for our Displayport connectors, and we did not speak out, for we rarely used external monitors anyway.

Then, they came for our Magsafe, and we did not speak out, for none of our friends or family would ever be so clumsy as to trip over our 2m power cable.

Then, they charged us $79 for a dongle which added these things back -- but there was nothing left to connect.

Don't forget about the superdrives

So how will this work with Thunderbolt displays?

It won't. This is the first sign of thunderbilt being stripped from consumer macs, and soon the pros for thinness sake.

That's why apple still sells the LED Model with mini-display port which can go over USB-C.

Like almost everyone else (in reality) I rarely hang a bunch of pasta off my ultraportable. With all-day battery life, I would literally have zero cords much of the time.

But when I DO need pasta... this one adapter would meet all my needs! And I'd need an adapter anyway for DisplayPort alone, so this is zero added cable clutter. Nice. Most people won't need it, but I think I will.

People who DO need tons of cables hanging off their portable... have many other fine Macs to choose from.

It's almost as though Apple offers options for different needs/wants...

You have to buy a USB hub on top of this. So you're looking at spending at least an additional $100 to make your new MacBook useful.

You need two or more corded USB devices hooked up to make a laptop "useful"? Two or more? Or it's useless? That statement sounds a little broad in this day and age... I'd recommend a different MacBook for you, though.

I don't think I've connected two USB devices to my Air at the same time in about 2 years. Maybe I just have too much wireless...

MSI and Asus are offering USB Type-C on some of their motherboards... but is this the first one in a laptop?

It's kinda weird to see Apple near the front of the pack in this regard.

Then again... Apple was one of the first computer companies to offer USB on the iMac long ago. And people were shocked then too!

I think that the new MBA is pushing itself into a corner - a small market segment where ultra-portability is the first requirement. Combined with the same RAM and SSD speed, the new MBA no longer fits my needs.

I just wonder if you could use this adapter, and then USB to ethernet, to get ethernet, HDMI, and charging, going all at once. If so, I'd be golden.

I must say that this is the first notebook from Apple in the last decade where I cannot see any use of it. It is a very Ivy product, meaning so simplistic that it's borders to useless.

One port is not enough, there have to be at least 2 USB or what ever and then a charge port - I use my notebooks on the road and I need to be able to charge it, connect 1 - 2 usb devices. I an adapter is not an option as they have an ability to disappear and they are not always available in the closest shop...

I do like the retina screen but that is not enough for me to buy it.

I was hoping, but no go.... I'll be hoping for another refresh of the Air before they kill it and then update my aging 11".....

No SD card slot is a major turnoff at least for me. I can live with the other connectivity issues.

Very bizarre day for apple.

I like this new port, but hate the idea of not having a magsafe connected charger. The power cord gets torn off my laptop all the time.

That was my first thought. Except for the fact that they are marketing this as truly ultra portable with long battery life. In theory you should be able to charge and then use without the need for a magsafe attached power. Now that does actually require us to remember to take it out of the bag to charge it so that when we actually need to use it, it has power. I pull my Air out all the time to find it has less than 10% even though it has sat for a few days because I didn't bother to plug it in. Fortunately I use it mainly on a desk.

This.

BUT, this is an ultra-portable laptop and perhaps you don't need everything plugged into it at all times.

It's a laptop designed to be as mobile and clutter free as possible. Removing ports helped achieve this. Plus this really makes sense when you think about it. I hardly ever have a ton of things plugged into my laptop at any given time. It's nice to have the ports, but a laptop is designed to be portable, not have a bunch of things hanging from it. $79 extra for those times you may need to plug something in is a small price to pay for an ultra portable laptop.

I think that the new MBA is pushing itself into a corner - a small market segment where ultra-portability is the first requirement. Combined with the same RAM and SSD speed, the new MBA no longer fits my needs.

Slight edit:

"a large market segment where ultra-portability is the first requirement."

But you got one word right that almost nobody gets right--so kudos:

"the new MBA no longer fits my needs"

(Although this is not the new MBA... the new MBA models also out today probably do fit your needs. This is the new MacBook.)

P.S. be glad Apple didn't move the Esc and Power buttons as rumored!

likely not with the integrated graphics already powering a high res built in display at the same time

"Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors"

Let me go on record saying I'm an Apple fanboy, I love their products, they are great, but this reaks of ass. The damn thing should be included. And for $79? I'm sure it costs $5 to make. $19.99 would be fine. At least include a USB-C to female USB 3.0 adapter for backing up to a USB stick or external HDD. I'd love to be in the board room when this decision came down. I hope this doesn't trickle down (up?) to the Macbook Pro line.

Wow that really sucks. Even though I really like the new Macbook that decision to me maybe wasn't the best?

They should have included at the very least a dual USB adapter out of the box..

Will the new macbook work with my thunderbolt display ?

EDIT: Yes, for video, no for the "hub" stuff? Seems to be the consensus on other DisplayPort/non-TB Macs.

DisplayPort works vua USB-C (would need a different adapter than this one)--but that particular display (for the hub/dock features) requires full Thunderbolt, not just DisplayPort.

I think Apple should make a 23" 4k (that's retina!) desktop display with DisplayPort support and/or USB-C support (for the sake of a hub).

So you need this adapter if you have an iPhone because in order to setup wifi sync, you need to sync with a cable first.

Good job Apple, good job.
