Wow that really sucks. Even though I really like the new Macbook that decision to me maybe wasn't the best?

They should have included at the very least a dual USB adapter out of the box..

True.

But since it's USB... which is a standard... we should see 3rd parties jumping all over this.

And it wouldn't need any crazy licensing like Thunderbolt.

First, they came for our USB ports, and we did not speak out, for we had Bluetooth mice.

Then, they came for our Displayport connectors, and we did not speak out, for we rarely used external monitors anyway.

Then, they came for our Magsafe, and we did not speak out, for none of our friends or family would ever be so clumsy as to trip over our 2m power cable.

Then, they charged us $79 for a dongle which added these things back -- but there was nothing left to connect.

You forgot: ...and raised the price of the thin laptop too.

Kicking hardware out and raising the price is a very profitable move. Accessories are also very profitable. I expect more of this trend in future Apple hardware.

So you need this adapter if you have an iPhone because in order to setup wifi sync, you need to sync with a cable first.

Good job Apple, good job.

Good point! Sounds like a software change is the smartest answer, though. Prove "trust" in the new Mac via a non-corded method. I expect that's what Apple will do. Next iTunes update?

(And of course you don't "need" WiFi sync. You could just use iCloud. But local sync/backup matters to me.)

Are you sure? What I saw today was 4 ports in one hole, only 1 of which is USB-C. I wonder if other connections are available around the USB connection so that only a proprietary or licensed adapter can work wit this Macbook jack.

Does anyone know if USB-C is able to be a power port while feeding data in and out at the same time. Up until now, I've only seen Apple's proprietary ports doing that, unless we count very lower power mobile devices.

I'm suspicious that this is a proprietary "hole" which includes a USB-C jack and to make it do more than one thing at a time requires a special adapter connection. Hopefully, my suspicions are wrong but there's lots of money in proprietary and/or licensing for Apple hardware.

Maybe I could charge my MacBook with my iPhone 6+!

I totally fell for the MacBook lust while watching the video, but I'm quickly getting over it. The cheaper Airs are superior in every way except display resolution and the thickness. I guess I'll have to wait for hands on to decide if I like the new keyboard and trackpad better.

Still, they are pretty. I hope the space gray comes out for the other models. (And I WILL stand and laugh at anyone I see with a gold MacBook. Then we'll yell at each other, I'll make it up to her by getting her coffee which will lead to a torrid affair and awful divorce settlement, then moving to southern France. DAMN YOU APPLE!)

I need to lay off the caffeine.

EDIT: Yes, for video, no for the "hub" stuff? Seems to be the consensus on other DisplayPort/non-TB Macs.

DisplayPort works vua USB-C (would need a different adapter than this one)--but that particular display (for the hub/dock features) requires full Thunderbolt, not just DisplayPort.

I think Apple should make a 23" 4k (that's retina!) desktop display with DisplayPort support and/or USB-C support (for the sake of a hub).

your trippin dude...theres no pcie on usb-c so therefore no thunderbolt display. thunderbolt displays do not have a displayport only mode.

Actually, looking through the Apple support forums, people are saying you CAN use a Thunderbolt display with non-TB Macs, via DisplayPort only. Which is why I edited my post from a hard No to a question mark. Officially or not, it seems like that's been done by a few people. (But people have driver issues and mixed results, and I doubt it's officially allowed.) What really matters is what happens with this new machine and Yosemite of course--which we have yet to discover.

If they are standardizing on usb-c, they should have done it for idevices as well!

But USB-C doesn't do everything Lightning can do--such as be reprogrammable/adaptable to unknown FUTURE purposes, and be so durable/lint free. It's nice, better even in some ways, but it's no Lightning.

And people would throw a fit if Apple changed the iPhone port again. 10 years was "too soon" to cancel the old dock connector, you may recall :p

You forgot: ...and raised the price of the thin laptop too.

They didn't. They left the Air price exactly the same and raised the specs.

And added this new model as well.

And updated the Retina Pro.

Nobody was left out :) (Although the 15" is awaiting chips Intel doesn't yet sell.)

They would have continued with lightning2 or thunderbolt2. I wonder why suddenly a new kind of port?

But wait a minute, does that means via USB-C it can also be charged via portable battery power supplies

Yeah I dunno.

I saw "USB-C" on the slide at the keynote.

They probably can't use the term "USB" unless it falls within the certified standards.

It's just a guess... but Apple might not be allowed to modify the function of a USB port and still call it "USB"

EDIT:

Also realize that Apple could have created another proprietary plug like they've done before.

Them actually using a standard like USB Type-C is rather refreshing.

Sooo the "Pro" in MacBook Pro now pretty much just means that we get USB ports like on any laptop.

Then why doesn't this MacBook Air have Lightning instead of USB-C, or better yet, that nice Thunderbolt standard Apple has been pushing? I had never even heard of USB-C until this was announced.

I was expecting the power supply to have at least 1 USB port on it, maybe 2 and a mini Displayport. Make it a mini-dock. Do we know that's not the case?

Like almost everyone else (in reality) I rarely hang a bunch of pasta off my ultraportable. With all-day battery life, I would literally have zero cords much of the time.

But when I DO need pasta... this one adapter would meet all my needs! And I'd need an adapter anyway for DisplayPort alone, so this is zero added cable clutter. Nice. Most people won't need it, but I think I will.

People who DO need tons of cables hanging off their portable... have many other fine Macs to choose from.

It's almost as though Apple offers options for different needs/wants...

You need two or more corded USB devices hooked up to make a laptop "useful"? Two or more? Or it's useless? That statement sounds a little broad in this day and age... I'd recommend a different MacBook for you, though.

I don't think I've connected two USB devices to my Air at the same time in about 2 years. Maybe I just have too much wireless...

I guess this thing just isn't meant as a desktop replacement then. I've gotten along fine with a 15" rMBP serving as my one and only computer since I got it in 2012 and have multiple things plugged into it (with the help of my Dell display which also has a USB hub built in). I just don't see a need for an ultra portable. My rMBP isn't heavy, it doesn't break my back. It's nice having all my files on it and not having to worry about if I copied it from my desktop to my laptop, or the cloud, or if I'll have internet access to access what's on the cloud. I like having one and only computer to worry about, and it's cheaper too.

I just don't get ultraportables. Especially this one, at this pricepoint. For the same price, you can get a base 13" rMBP with a bigger screen, higher resolution, faster processor, better graphics, longer battery life and more ports. Yes, it weighs a bit more, and is a bit thicker. If an extra pound breaks your back, you need to go to a doctor. Or a gym.

I have all my media on an external drive so I'm often charging & syncing my iPhone at the same time. I hope you can daisy chain a regular USB hub to this USB-C hub. I'm not a fan of WiFi syncing as it's slower and I can't do it while at work on the office network.

But this certainly seems like the new way for Apple and we will all be forced to adjust, just like we adjusted to the removal of optical drives (which are almost obsolete). I don't mind a new port standard but having just one makes me hesitate a little. Maybe wait until the next gen when it's a little more integrated. I was so ready to buy the new 12" model to replace my 11" MBA but I need to make sure it works with my flow.

But since USB-C isn't proprietary to Apple, there will be lots of aftermarket hubs at better prices in time.

The reality is that I doubt I would need this. I no longer connect anything to my current Air or iPad other than a power source. What irks me is that they did not go with thunderbolt or lightning and instead went with USB-C. Basically each platform now has a different standard and that is just not very APPLE.

That Apple has rolled out a "sold separately" adapter implies probably not.

The adapter would still make sense if you wanted to plug in devices while on the go, on battery power. It would be great to plug all your peripherals straight into the wall- wart though

i update my music through wifi sync.

last week i had an issue where wifi sync wasn't working at all. i had to restart my computer, tether my iPhone to my MBP and resync like that and then it started working.

brb going to the apple store and paying $80 because iTunes is being buggy.

each computer should include this adapter, or it should be cheap, $20 max.

I agree. I just don't think you'll get the power brick hub you asked about. I think this is Apple's answer for that want. Build it into the power brick and why does anyone really need this? However, make it a "sold separately" accessory and it shouldn't take people long to figure out that they need something like this accessory to really make that 1 port useful.

It would have been nice to have at least one more USB port on the adapter.
