rogers

Haha, i guess all those who complain about rogers are praising them now. they charge us canadians $30 for a 6gb (similar to att - $30 for unlimited)(6gb is virtually unlimited for iphone use - never passed 250mb) but rogers allows teethering and att doesnt. lol

How do you tether on your rogers iPhone?

so far you couldnt because the iphone didnt allow it (unless uv jailbroken before) however rogers policy has always been that teethering is allowed. but i know a few people who have jailbroken and teether and its okay. rogers wants u teether so that u go over ur 6gb data plan.

Yes, "unlimited" is not really unlimited, it's limited by fair use policy. I'm not sure of AT&Ts fair use policy but I do believe it's 5GB/month as diamond said.

I thought you could tether on any carrier using netshare without having to pay the extra fee, which is why Apple pulled it from the AppStore, carriers didn't like it.

yup.. i'm on rogers and have jailbroken. i tether quite often and it works great. just uses data from the $30/6gig i have on my account.

this will be great that its built in now..

For all the major US providers (AT&T, VerizonWireless, Sprint) unlimited is capped at 5GB per month. The use of 'unlimited' is VERY misleading.

i think they pulled it because of att. so yea if u managed ot buy netshare in the few days that it was available, i guess u would have been able to teether with rogers no problem. but they pulled it out of all stores which is stupid. they should have only pulled it out of the countries in which the carriers didnt want it.

awww.. boo. I was really hoping you could tether over wireless. By that I mean have the iphone act as an AP. Even if it couldn't directly act as an AP, it would be great to have it be able to broadcast itself over Bonjour and then your PC/Mac can see it and use it as a bridge that way.

How is any of that different than connecting with Bluetooth, as shown in the photo?

that netshare app that was briefly in the app store was annoying though as it was just proxy based tether

Agreed, but I guess they didn't want people going to the UK to get netshare and then using it in the US. (lol long trip just to get an app, but maybe you were going anyway?)

Do you mean use the 3G connection and allow multiple computers to use Wifi to connect to the internet via the iPhone? That sounds like a performance nightmare and also sounds like a hardware limitation.

In most of Europe, tethering is free. But we do pay per megabyte or X euros per month for data plan. They sure know how to get our money, but in my point of view it would be a deal-breaker if I had to pay 15 euros for data plan plus additional 15 euros for being able to use it with my computer. A data plan is a data plan, I should be able to use it as I wish, with my phone directly or connected to my computer.

Carriers charge extra because people typically download larger volumes of data when on a more comfortable device such as a laptop, and because downloads (such as automatic updates) tend to be larger.

Of course, that sort of flies in the face of the whole 'unlimited' thing, but meh.

Good thing I live in a country where I can tether at no additional cost, according to O2.

If you mean UK then i might have just made a mess on aisle 3.

Now doubt AT&T will follow up with an exorbitant fee in order completely tether us by our testicles.

If O2 UK offer a tethering option with a low cost (ideally <£10) if/when the next iPhone gets released in the summer, I will buy an iPhone. End of!
