I was poking fun at Apple's usual tardiness to the game, not biggin' myself up.

However, I've rethought it and yes, I would like an applause. If the average idiot like myself can do stuff a decade before Apple announces it as a Great New Thing then I think it's only right that we raise our glasses to the average idiot.

So here's to me, and whoever else just enjoys getting stuff working without the need for a ready meal marketed directly to their stomachs!

But Apple isn't saying it's new to all cellphones, they're saying it's new to their cellphone which is less than 3 years old. And how long had Motorola been in the cellphone business by the time you were tethering? I guarantee you it was longer than 3 years.

I have a feeling this will be free due to the fact it will sell more iPhones adding $60 is better than just $30.

If that were true ATT would already offer "free" tethering for the phones it sells that already have this ability. Tethering won't be free, if only because it would cannibalize its wireless internet service which is $60/mo.

Also, if you have millions of phones out there w/ free tethering that is a lot of bandwidth, and you can't make a profit giving that way on a $70 plan.

It's perfectly clear. Apple said the touch would get A2DP and peer to peer gaming, etc. I take it you didn't read the current news coverage or see the webcast?

I didn't see the webcast but I did read the article on MR and it doesn't say the touch would get A2DP or P2P gaming, it said the iPhone would get those and...

Meanwhile, Apple also revealed that Bluetooth support can be activated in the 2nd generation iPod Touches.

No where in the article does it definitely say the BT will be activated in the 2nd gen Touches, does the webcast say differently?

That is some twisted logic. That's like criticizing Ford because the Model T didn't have electric windows. What difference does it make how long Moto has been in the cell biz? The concept of tethering has been around for nearly a decade.

The truth is, though it's not cell phone makers that make the call on whether to include features like tethering. It's 100% up to the cell phone provider.

Not that I don't think they won't charge for it but why not? They charge for SMS which costs them absolutely no extra bandwidth.

Since when did Apple annouce this as a great new feature?

Building a cellphone business (of division in Apple case) is going to take a while to get it right, and AT&T already had tethering for other phones, so I really don't think it's AT&T.

YES.

i just hope this feature doesn't end tethering via jailbreak. i hope it only forces AT&T to allow it in the unlimited data plan.

after all - whether the data is on your computer, or on your iPhone - what's the difference right?

Yes looking at it as an individual if you download 2GB on your computer or on your phone it's the same 2GB, looking at it from AT&Ts perspective, if you have (just for example) 1000 customers, it's much easier to run up 2GB on your computer than on your phone, so more than likely you're going to use more than 2GB on your computer than on your phone, multiply that times 1000 and you're looking at a lot of network traffic, which costs money.

Cool Stuff.

It's not worth $30/month for me, but I could see myself using it if I was in the mountains or something for a few days. Then I'd cancel the tethering service.

lol. Just wait until the jailbreak team gets ahold of it. I'm sure they'll make a workaround for tethering without the need to pay extra. :)

If I can tether then I'm more likely to get that netbook I've been eyeing up.

Or maybe that 10" screen Apple touch device all the rumours have been floating about....

well yeah.. but if AT&T is so great and reliable they should be able to handle way more than they will ever need to

now some tethering between my mobile phone and ipod touch.... oh i would love that sooo much. (yes bluetooth will be enable in ipod touch 2g)

it seems this hasn't been picked up yet.

I don't think you'll be able to use the tethering in which you wish. I think it will be mainly for iPhone to computer rather than giving an iPod Touch access to the internet through your mobile

If they enable the bluetooth on the iPod Touch you should be able to use the iPhone to tether over bluetooth to the iPod Touch.

ipod touch and internet over bluetooth?

I am in the region where iphone is unavailable,
so now that 3.0 OS is out for developers, I wonder if my ipod touch can connect to internet via bluetooth... there are a lot of phones which provide internet via bluetooth here - aka tethering(what this topic is about).
if it can, I can use internet with my touch; I don't want to use my clumsy phone to surf internet... can anybody check this out?

If bluetooth is enabled, which it seems to be according to this thread, in theory it should work.

Tethering would be nice, but not at another $30 a month. It will be interesting to see if AT&T uses the same policy as they do with their other smartphones.

I wonder if you can turn on and off tethering as needed.
During months I wish to travel I may want this, otherwise, they can pound sand.

I'm not sure I think $30/month is a good option, at least for me.
I would only need the tethering option 4 weeks a year total.

From my post back on Aug 29, 2008, 09:39 AM -
With the $30.00 tethering option currently offered at AT&T (for certain smartphones they offer, not iPhone),
AT&T allows you to use/not use the tethering on a 'month-to-month' basis, even with a contract in place.

Granted, I am not sure what the user needs to do before the next month's bill is generated
to let AT&T know you won't be using tethering next month (or until further notice), but it can be done.

I'm not interested in tethering for $30 extra per month..may as well subscribe to a decent 3g air card service.

From my post back on Aug 29, 2008, 09:39 AM -
On the other hand, AT&T (just for comparison) offers a 3G aircard type service, but it requires a 2 year contract,
is $60.00 a month, and does not carry the 'month-to-month' option, as I explained above.

I use Netshare from time to time. I find the power consumption to not be major on my iPhone EDGE. I have only HAD to use it two or three times, I've tried using it several more just to see that I could and have never had a problem. I hope that the official solution will give me the option of BT, USB, or WiFi to connect.

oh they will, don't worry. The 1st iphone plan was a great deal, then the 3g came along and they decided to match it to all other data plans. They won't make any special deal just for the iPhone again.
