No worries, AT&T will make sure this doesn't happen without another expensive monthly payment and a super low bandwidth cap.

I wont pay for a jailbroken app!

why is it any different? Jailbreaking isn't piracy. Everything doesn't have to be free. It's just things that Apple wouldn't let devs do. I am still using the demo version. I have only used it once or twice in emergencies. But it's not like it's easier to make JB software and they wouldn't deserve to get paid. I'll feel better about buying it through Cydia Store.

This is such awesome news! Not only will it be built into the OS, it will not incur any other costs on Rogers!

And only 9 years after I was tethering with my Motorola Timeport.

Mind you, I was also "browsing the mobile web" with my Timeport. WML's not the same as the full WWW, of course. I mean, certainly no support for Java or Flash, like with modern phones.

Bravo, Apple, bravo.

$30/month for tethering and 5GB/month, while I would rather not pay the $30 it's not too much for most people (for me it is, but so is any iPhone plan which is why I have an iPod Touch) and 5GB/month for something you're going to use as a secondary internet (hopefully) is not too low of a bandwidth cap.

In most of Europe, tethering is free. But we do pay per megabyte or X euros per month for data plan. They sure know how to get our money, but in my point of view it would be a deal-breaker if I had to pay 15 euros for data plan plus additional 15 euros for being able to use it with my computer. A data plan is a data plan, I should be able to use it as I wish, with my phone directly or connected to my computer.

Just imagine if it was more like €22.25 for data and then another €22.25 for tethering. This is what AT&T charges for other smart phones that currently support tethering. That equals the ~ €44.50 lowest end voice plan and doesn't include the ~ €7.50 extra if you want to use SMS.

Just thought I'd point out that this is O2 Ireland, not UK. He uploaded a custom carrier bundle and that activated it.

Are you saying the iPod touches have Bluetooth in them, but it's not enabled? And it will be with 3.0?

We've known the iPod Touch 2nd gen had bluetooth since the release if you paid attention to the disassembly pics/info on ifixit.com, until 3.0 it has only been able to be used for nike+, now with 3.0 they are opening it up to other devices.

Meanwhile, Apple also revealed that Bluetooth support can be activated in the 2nd generation iPod Touches.

Which is great news. I like the idea of wireless music is kind of neat. I also think that demo of the device becoming the equalizer for the speaker (shown in the video).

Isn't it already stated that 3.0 will enable/unlock/open up bluetooth on the touches?

I wonder if you can turn on and off tethering as needed. During months I wish to travel I may want this, otherwise, they can pound sand.

So is it possible to currently get an iPhone running the 3.0 beta working with tethering on the AT&T network? (If not, then the steps below might be pointless) This developer looks like he is on the O2 network so I am just wondering if it works the same way in the US.

Here's my idea to get around having to pay an extra $30 a month:
1) Join the Apple developer team for $100 and get the 3.0 beta running
2) Figure out how to get tethering working just like this guy has it running (I bet someone will have figured out within a week and steps will be circulating on the Internet shortly after)
3) Use tethering for no extra charge on you iPhone and never upgrade to the regular 3.0 version when it comes out in the summer. (so AT&T won't make you pay)

I hope this could be a possibility for anyone that wants tethering!

Dont forget that the betas expire after a certain amount of time and if you dont update it your phone will become inoperable.

No one in their right mind would do that. They'd have to have the buggy beta software (which all reports say is definitely not ready for a release) for the rest of the time they use that phone.

Nice

I don't need it however it's so nice to see it's an option and like other Apple product will "Just work" making it sweet for those who do need it. I never like to see anything crippled. I would much rather have choices.

the beta is time limited

Netshare

I have Netshare and it works great. As long as Apple does not block it somehow, I will not pay a dime to get tethering. The data service is high enough as it is, why should we pay more? In Australia, I have heard that their 3G services are government funded and are 15 times faster than anything we have as far as any internet service. Hooray for socialism.

I have netshare, but the battery life is terrible... using it, even plugged in, your battery cant charge fast enough to keep up.

Hopefully the 'official' solution isnt the same

No reason to get excited...

PdaNet works great, and is indeed many, many light-years ahead of Netshare.

Who cares about "official" tethering if AT&T is going to rape us for the "privilege"?

Ahhh, that stinks. It would be great if there wasn't a time limit.

No one in their right mind would do that. They'd have to have the buggy beta software (which all reports say is definitely not ready for a release) for the rest of the time they use that phone.

The last beta release right before the regular version comes out might actually be pretty stable and not have too many bugs. But I guess it won't work anyway because of the time limit.

you want an applause or something?
I was poking fun at Apple's usual tardiness to the game, not biggin' myself up.

However, I've rethought it and yes, I would like an applause. If the average idiot like myself can do stuff a decade before Apple announces it as a Great New Thing then I think it's only right that we raise our glasses to the average idiot.

So here's to me, and whoever else just enjoys getting stuff working without the need for a ready meal marketed directly to their stomachs!

Is there instructions on how to activate tethering in 3.0??

All I know that was required to do this was a modified carrier settings bundle. He wasn't even trying to achieve this he was just modifying the settings to get MMS. No jailbreak was required.
