Where did you hear that (not arguing, just hadn't remembered it)?

http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

In the box
iPhone 3G
Stereo Headset with mic
Dock Connector to USB Cable
USB Power Adapter
Documentation
Cleaning/polishing cloth
SIM eject tool

They are selling a 3G dock, separately. Tho there is no mention of price.

iPhone 3G Dock
Get fast access to USB charging, syncing, and audio out with the iPhone 3G Dock. Even conduct speakerphone calls when your iPhone is in the dock.

Gen 1 dock will not fit the 3G iPhone.
Which is lame - especially considering they are not including a dock with the 3G iPhone.

I'm not convinced of that yet. The iPhone 3G has a thinner base with no additional width. If anything the 1.0 iPhone wouldn't fit into the 3G base. I think the 3G will fit, it just won't have the back support.

Per AT&T's iPhone & iPhone 3G Comparison Chart (PDF), the new phone is 0.5mm taller (doesn't effect gen 1 dock fit), 1.1mm wider (will not fit gen 1 dock), 0.7mm thicker (will not fit gen 1 dock) and 2g lighter.

Convinced?

As you said... relieves you of the obligations of your old 2 year contract if you sign a new one, but you have not "fulfilled them." You simply enter into a new one...
"Relieves you of obligations" is a better way to state it, you are correct, but that is the same as a satisfied contract as the hardware is no longer under obligation to that contract. New hardware is what's under obligation to the new contract, otherwise you'd have both your old and new iPhone tethered to the new contract.

...and it says nothing about being entitled to unlocking. Interestingly, no 3G iPhone is available without a new 2 year contract (unlike upgrading to a 16 GB EDGE iPhone, which allowed you to step into old contract)...
I wouldn't expect them to advertise unlocking, but my past experience with other phones once out-of-contract, you can ask for it to be unlocked. Maybe Apple has a loophole since the iPhone can be classified as a computer, thus avoiding any "unlock" legality. I too took notice that of that change, guess you better buy the largest one first since you'll have to live with it for 2 years.

"...recording audio..." is mentioned as an iPhone feature?
Besides either A) calling yourself & leaving a voicemail or B) recording a new greeting, exactly how can a never-jailbroken iPhone record audio?

I noticed this as well. One of those rare MacRumors errors, or is there some audio recording feature I could've been using all this time? :)

I'm an iPod Touch owner who bought the Touch instead of the iPhone because I didn't need a phone and didn't want a monthly fee. A used iPhone 1.0 looks to me like the PERFECT Touch. If the Camera, speaker, and microphone work then that used iPhone with no phone contract is exactly what every Touch owner has wished his Touch could be. I'll pay anyone $199 for yours.

I'm still deciding whether to sell my 16 GB iPhone v1.0 (for what, $99 or so?) or keep it to use as an iTunes Remote Control, using the new app that's going to be available next week. It'd be nice to be able to just keep the old phone around for that purpose and as a spare in case something happens with my new 3G phone.
I say keep it if you don't already have an iPod touch. As it's now basically a touch but with a few additional features, like a camera.

I just hope iPhone's with software version 2.0 will be as easily jailbroken and unlocked as they are now with 1.1.4. Sure, AT&T tells you if you buy a new 3G iPhone, you can use your old iPhone as an iPod touch, but if it ever freezes and requires a software restore, then it could be a brick forever.

There should be an official policy for Apple or AT&T to permanently activate and unlock the iPhone after a certain period of time, similar to the current AT&T policy to unlock their other phones after you've been a customer for a few months.

Check out eBay - 16gb iPhone's are going for more like $400 than$100.

Sweet! I always thought my iphone would become an upgraded ipod touch when I bought my new 3G iPhone anyway.
At first I was thinking about selling it but then I realized that I should keep it for several reasons...
Its Apples first mobile phone and will become a classic, I can use it as a backup music player/dedicated movie/video player, internet browsing, and I can still use the 2.0 software update with all the cool new apps.

The best part is that my iPhone is practically brand new! My first iPhone started having a screen problem so I took it in and they gave me a brand spakin new iphone and this happened about 2 weeks before they stopped selling iphones!
I immediately put it in my leather case and it has not one scratch and still has the plastic sticker that protects the screen when you first buy it. I even still have the bag and the box it came in.
This one will definitely make a good sale when I decide to sell it. :D

AND YET THEY STILL DON'T UNLOCK THE iPHONE FOR YOU. I HATE YOU AT&T AND (PARTLY) APPLE FOR NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!

THE LAST I HEARD, ALL PHONES CAN BE UNLOCKED EXCEPT FOR YOURS! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND START HELPING YOUR CUSTOMERS!

I of course have thought about this, but I'm talking about something smaller than a book-sized router. something like a USB key that puts out a small range wireless network, like 20 feet or something. The idea is that I could walk into work with just my jacket and have everything I need to make a phone call.

What you need is the Nintendo DS Wifi Adapter. Its a usb stick that does EXACTLY what you want.

Has it been confirmed that you can use your old iPhone as an iPod once you upgrade to 2.0? I havent bought the 3G iPhone yet but I was wondering if I could hand down my 1st gen to my daughter instead of buying her an iPod Touch. Thanks!
