This explains why my second monitor (connected via USB C) suddenly stopped working on my Intel Mac Mini (works on my windows machine). It wakes my monitor when connected, the main monitor flickers as it tries to rearrange my desktops but then comes up with No Signal, disconnecting the monitor my main monitor flickers again like it’s rearranging again.

Is anyone else here using a DVI monitor that just displays "No Signal"?

My main one is connected via HDMI (Benq, 1080p), the second one uses a DVI to USB-C adapter (Acer, 5:4, 1280x1024) and everything was working fine on my old Mac Mini (Big Sur, I think). But on the new Mac Mini 2020 (first Monterey 12.0.1, now 12.3) the second monitor just says "No Signal", then goes to sleep (no flicker on my main monitor) - it doesn't matter what USB-C port I use or what way I turn it. The weird bit is that macOS still detects the second monitor, like it knows the model name, I can set the resolution and even move the cursor to it (even though I can't see it, of course).

I already contacted Apple support and shared my screen with them and they were able to see the second monitor's image (but apparently it was flickering or something), while it was still not there for me. Nothing they had me try (start in safe mode, create a second admin user,...) worked but the second monitor woke up randomly twice: When I set it to mirror the main one (never worked before or again since then) and when I just woke the Mac from sleep mode (by pressing enter). A restart makes it go back to "No Signal".

How can a huge problem like that slip through Apple's quality control?!

I contacted Apple support again for a follow-up and they kept trying to blame my adapter and told me to just buy multiple other official Apple adapters (right, like I'm going to spend more than $100 just to test stuff). When I told them that a lot of other people are experiencing the same problem (even in the official forums, and that's just the people who're annoyed enough to post) and that the only thing in common is Monterey they basically said that they don't care what people are writing in forums, as they are experiencing "a completely different problem" because it's concerning a different display and because of that it's not connected to my case (*sigh*).

So please, everyone, contact Apple support if you want this to be fixed!

On the phone to support now. they blame anything but Monterey. Asking me to reinstall OS or even downgrade to Big Sur. I'm trying to explain that I just want to report the bug not try and fix by jumping through hoops. If I set my LG monitor to DP 1.2 it wakes up as before but I lose 144hz refresh rate. MacMini 2020 M1 16GB ram. Waiting to speak with a senior engineer.

Do you know if your DisplayPort cable is compatible with 1.4?

Someone earlier in this this thread mentioned about the cable being certified for 1.4

I'm glad I read this because I have been having these issues when I connect to my conference room monitor (after upgrading) and was wondering what was going on. I won't spend time troubleshooting the system — I'll wait for an update.

I believe so, it came with the monitor LG38WN95C - I've been running the monitor on DP1.4 since November on Big Sur, zero issues and able to run at full 144hz. Now with Monterey 12.3 the monitor no longer wakes unless changed to DP1.2 but then can only run at 75hz.

I have a 2016 MacBook Pro with a 27 in LG Ultrafine and am having issues connecting since the upgrade too. Where exactly do you access the settings to change the display port version to 1.2?

on mine you go into the monitor OSD, then settings then general and the option is in there, 1.1 or 1.2 or 1.4

I have to use a Wacom Cintiq drawing screen with my 16" MB M1Pro. Monitor has been a complete mess (and of course wasn't on my intel mac). It has always been difficult to sync up apple, adobe and wacom's updates. Seems like one or two are always creating minor issues. These external monitor issues have been a train wreck for my productivity. Monitor often doesn't turn on at all, or if it does all my windows and panels are moved into odd and increasingly random positions. Spent a long while with apple on the problem but no luck yet. New display port cables from apple did not help nor any other potential solutions I've seen.

I have noticed that on waking from sleep my laptop monitor flickers and jumps like it is hesitant to find the external monitor. When it finally does even things on the laptop screen have moved locations and shifted around.

What happens if you disable monitor sleep? I have this on my M1 mini but that's because one of the monitors wakes up before the other so they all go on the first monitor to wake up and then they get distributed as before when the other one wakes up.

And the sacking of everyone who carpet bombed the Safari sidebar in macOS and iPadOS. A lot of the issues are simply bad, user hostile design choices. A bug can be defined as unexpected behaviour. Many of the problems now plaguing Apple’s platforms are not unexpected behaviours. You’d have to be asleep at the wheel to allow many of them through the first beta, let alone put them into production. It really feels like Apple just don’t care anymore.
Yikes. I must be the only one who likes the new Safari. The sidebar, the bottom bar on iOS, etc.

I guess if it never goes to sleep things won't move, but if it does go to sleep or restarts things get moved all around. I use After effects... so lots of restarts!

I’m having the exact same issue on 12.3 and usb-c with an LG 27 inch 4K monitor. It’s frustrating as I have a MacMini, so I need an external monitor to work. Disconnecting and reconnecting all cables didn’t work, neither did turning the usb connector. I’ve finally got it up and running again after going into the settings of the monitor with the buttons at the bottom of it and changing the Displayport setting to 1.2 as recommended. It’s crazy that this does the trick, but hopefully it will keep working until Apple solves this huge problem.

Following the latest macOS Monterey 12.3 update, users are reporting several problems when using external monitors, ranging from Macs not detecting displays at all to inaccurate screen output, according to posts on the Apple Support and MacRumors forums.

In the ten days since the update became available to the public, users have already reported issues with the update bricking Macs that have had logic board replacements and problems with using game controllers. Adding to the list of issues, users are now reporting that the update is causing problems with external monitors.

According to users on the Apple Support and MacRumors forums, some external displays connected over USB-C are no longer detected by Macs after updating to the latest macOS update. As one user on Apple Support reports:
Other users have shared similar experiences. While many also report issues with USB-C displays, others also say that HDMI connections to the Mac are not being recognized. Some users have been able to crowdsource potential workarounds in the meantime. According to one user on the MacRumors Forums, the issue stems from macOS not recognizing a DisplayPort protocol version, which meant they had to change the version to an earlier one with poorer quality output.
Another short-term fix floated on both the Apple Support and MacRumors forums is to unplug the external display for a short time, plug it back into the Mac, and then plug the display back into a power outlet, after which it should work. Some users have also reported problems when using two external monitors with their Mac.

The issue of only one external display being recognized when two are connected to a Mac seems to have been present throughout the beta testing period for macOS 12.3. Even after release, however, the issue remains. As one user on the Apple Support forums relates:

The online reports suggest that these issues are not arising when using Apple's new Studio Display, but instead with third-party monitors, such as those offered by BenQ and LG.

macOS 12.3 is Monterey's largest point-update since launch, bringing with it Universal Control along with several other new feature additions. MacRumors earlier this week reached out to Apple for comment on the issues users are experiencing so far with the latest macOS update. We'll update this post if we receive a response.

I have seen this movie before.
It sounds like a software driver update is needed to support third party monitors.
The MAC OS may just need to download them, IF they are available.

This might explain the new display issues I have. I bought a Samsung M7 4K 32” display and my MBP M1 simply won’t detect it.

Weirdly, if I turn the display off and attach it, it appears on the display settings.

The moment I turn the monitor on, it disappears but the display settings are screwed until I unplug the USB-C connector.

I thought it was a cable issue so I’ve ordered a new USB-C to HDMI lead, but now I’ve read this, it could be this issue….

Damned annoying!
Good news. I replaced my cable with a 4K 60Hz Uni USB-C to HDMI lead and the monitor now works… ?

I haven't experienced this BUT I will say that when switching inputs on my external display from my Xbox Series X back to my 5K iMac it has some weird graphical glitches that I haven't seen before that lasts for a few seconds and it only started after the last update.

Same here, mac mini 2018 + LG 32UL950. Connected via Thunderbolt doesn't work anymore, but I managed to get HDMI working when disconnecting Thunderbolt. Colors seems a bit off though, but workable for now. Waiting for 12.3.1

I have a Mac mini 2018 connected to a LG 4k display via USB-C and a Benq fullhd display connected via HDMI. After 12.3 the LG connected to USB-C didn't work until I swapped the cable from the Thunderbolt port closest to the HDMI port to the port farthest away from it. A stupid fix, but seems to work for me.

I have a 2013 Mac Pro. I use the Apple Thunderbolt Display connected to one of the Mac's Thunderbolt 2 ports. Yesterday, I got a 1080P TV that I am trying to connect to the Mac's HDMI port. As soon as I connect it, the Thunderbolt display goes blank. When I disconnect the HDMI cable, the Thunderbolt display comes back. The Mac does not see both monitors in display preferences; it's one or the other. From what I am reading here, I assume this is happening because of the 12.3 update, right?

I was messing around with cabling this morning, and I plugged into the USBC-DP cable again, and at 144 hz it was really bad, it was more than just flickering, it was blinking. I knocked it down to 120 hz and the blinking stopped, but there was an every so slight flickering left though.

So I hooked it back up to the HDMI cable at 100 hz. It's pretty much normal again now, except although I can't really see any flickering per say, I still think something is still not right because not long after I use the computer, I start to get a little nauseous and get a slight headache. If I hook my PC desktop back up to the monitor, everything is perfectly fine.

I got my Mac Studio at Costco, so they have a 90 day return policy, so I have time to see if Apple fixes this with an update. I hope they do soon. I would like to finish the transition from the PC to the Mac, but I can't do that for now if the screen is making me sick to my stomach.

Latching on to this discussion, hoping for a solution. Have an M1 14” MBP with an LG Superfine 5K display (the one Apple sells). Worked fine for months, then stopped (I’m guessing due to a software update). After lots of troubleshooting I bought an Apple-branded TB cable and it started working. Yay! Then a month later, it just stopped again after 12.3. Tried different cables. Nada. Bought an HP 4K monitor which worked for a day…until it just stopped being recognized (and NOTHING had changed, software wise). Baffling and frustrating...
