I was messing around with cabling this morning, and I plugged into the USBC-DP cable again, and at 144 hz it was really bad, it was more than just flickering, it was blinking. I knocked it down to 120 hz and the blinking stopped, but there was an every so slight flickering left though.

So I hooked it back up to the HDMI cable at 100 hz. It's pretty much normal again now, except although I can't really see any flickering per say, I still think something is still not right because not long after I use the computer, I start to get a little nauseous and get a slight headache. If I hook my PC desktop back up to the monitor, everything is perfectly fine.

I got my Mac Studio at Costco, so they have a 90 day return policy, so I have time to see if Apple fixes this with an update. I hope they do soon. I would like to finish the transition from the PC to the Mac, but I can't do that for now if the screen is making me sick to my stomach.

Did they have them in stock at Costco? What was the price?

They didn't have them in stock for walk-ins, but I ordered it on their website and had it in two days. You can have it shipped to your house, or to your local warehouse and pick it up, which is what I did.

They only sell the base models. The base M1 Max is $1,949.99 and the M1 Ultra is $3,799.99. The ultra though has been out of stock for awhile now, as is the Studio Monitor, but the M1 Max Studios seem to stay in stock.

Thanks. I've been pondering an M1 mini vs a Mac Studio.

I saw a discount from Apple Insider on the Studio for $200 and a discount of $100 on the M1 mini. Costco is nice in that they give you two years' warranty on computers.

The Mac Studio is way more than I need though. I already have an M1 mini but I want to drive three monitors.

I might just go back to Big Sur. Monterey is like the Windows Vista.

Mac Studio owners are probably stuck on 12.3

Intel Macs can go back or even run 2 different versions of macOS.

Thats what scares me about the future of macOS on Apple Silicon.

You Cant Go Back. sort of like iPadOS.
Except you can.

I'm using 4K 60Hz monitors, HP Z32 and BenQ PD 3200, as well as a 2560x1600px HP LP3065 (I like the extra vertical space and type looks okay once you set medium font smoothing defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2). These work pretty reliably with an M1 Max (and before that an M1 Pro) through a WD D50 Thunderbolt dock.

You could try putting a dock or Thunderbolt cable adapter between your monitors and the Studio (why you should have to, I agree, but I'm suggesting solutions here).

Otherwise I wouldn't expect Apple to properly support other suppliers high end gear (i.e. 144Ghz monitors in this case). Sadly.

Good luck. I'd love to hear the results of your monitor experiments, when you are done.

12.3.1 doesn't fix the issue of t he screen going black after login (M1 max MBP, Caldigit TS4 -> DisplayPort extenerla display)

Waiting to update from 12.2.1 to hear that 12.3 is stable with external monitors.
I have a Nexigo 4k panel for travel and can't afford to have issues on the road.
Post here as you have success/fails with 12.3.1. Thanks in advance!

12.3 / 12.3.1 and have the wake on sleep issue with external monitors on my new Mac Studio with a TS3+ unlike the Caldigit doc, the USB devices seem to respond fine, but the monitors wont wake up. Unlike others I've turned off display sleep and this still happens when I manually put it to sleep each time. When connecting directly to the displays either via an OWC displayport adaptor, or HDMI directly, everything works as expected. Also unlike the Caldigit doc, I do have to unplug it every single time I put it to sleep, not just after reboot.

Edit: typo

12.3.1 didn't fix it for my Mac Mini 2020, still getting "No Signal" with my second monitor that uses the DVI to USB-C adapter.

Same here.

Hardware used:
• Macbook Pro 16" 2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
• Elgato THUNDERBOLT 3 PRO DOCK
• EIZO FlexScan EV3237

Problem: External Display is not recognized after wake up from sleep mode.

I updated to Monterey 12.3.1 and on restart the external monitor was recognized at once (as on every restart).
On wakeup you'll see the effect like in the video I made. Sometimes it works (after at least 5 minutes) sometimes I need to restart. Before Monterey the recognition of the external monitor was at once.

I remember this effect from Windows. The problems there was the reason why I throwed away MS 20 years ago. It seems like Monterey is what was Vista for MS.

The described problem as video:

Monitor: Dell U4021QW

Both on macOS 12.3.1:
  • 15" MacBook Pro 2017 Intel via USB-C: PD, no USB, no video
  • 14" MacBook Pro 2021 ARM via USB-C: PD, no USB, no video

This issue is likely specific to DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP via USB-C) as USB-C to HDMI adapters/cables work (HDMI Alt Mode). It might be specific to DP 1.4 mode, as some users report that setting their monitor to use DP 1.2 does work. Not all monitors have that option, including mine so I can't use that as a workaround.

Everyone, please do create your own case with Apple Support to get more attention to this issue!

Update: as of this morning my issue is solved after unplugging the power of my monitor instead of power cycling via on/off button.

Fixed: After trying all the advertised solutions for months I finally found a fix that has worked flawlessly for three days now.

I have a MacBook Pro (Monterey) and WAS using a "HyperDrive SOLO Hub for USB-C Devices" docking station to connect my hp external monitor via HDMI. The monitor would work for a few minutes, then start flickering and go off and on. The docking station was the issue (not a great design).

The fix was changing the Hyperdrive to the "Upgrow USB C to HDMI Adapter 4K@60Hz Cable Type C to HDMI Adapter [Thunderbolt 3 Compatible]" purchased on Amazon for $16.75 (ZERO issues for three days).

I hope this helps someone with similar issues.

2013 Mac Pro: the Dell P2715Q monitor works fine, but the 27 inch LG UltraFine is not detected at the restart and then goes into a low resolution mode. High resolution modes are not even available from the display settings. I have to disconnect the UltraFine monitor before powering the computer and connect it only after logging in. Only then high resolution modes become available.

When running Windows on bootcamp (MBP16) there are no external monitor issues !
This is getting ridiculous  Problem persisted on Monterrey from the beginning.

Curious if you see any improvement with 12.4.

Feeling it's time to pull the trigger soon.

personally noticed less external monitor issues with 12.4, im using macbook air m1 with anker hub to displayport Odyssey G9 5120x1440 monitor while clamshell mode no longer having wake up monitor issues now

Same Problem here after 12.4, But I May Have a FIX.
I have a Brand New Mac Studio and a Brand New LG 32UP83A-W 31.5 Inch, and after the latest Monterey Update, my Monitor was Blank. Scared the crap outa me. I messed with it every way I could think of, then called Apple, and they worked with me for hours and were no help at all... I finally told the Apple Tech that I was gonna pull the AC Cable out of the Back of the LG... I did, and then plugged it back in... and the Monitor was working.

I had some other Updates that I installed on June 5, and I Shut the Mac Studio down (I didn't Restart) and the same crap happened... I pulled the AC out of the Back of the Monitor again, then plugged it back in and it seems to work again.

So, maybe I'm just howling into the wilderness here but... have you folks found a workaround, or did the problems stop for you after 12.4?

Having the same issue with Monterey 12.4, MBP M1, and a DELL U3219Q. Only get it working by unplugging power cord from monitor, wait 5 - 10 seconds, reconnect. Not sure if downgrading to a previous version could fix?

Thanx for replying. I was staring to wonder if everyone figured this out but me.

I talked to Apple the first time it happened when I installed 12.4, and they were pretty clueless. In fact they were little help, and I accidentally figured it out when I unplugged my AC from the back of my Monitor.

Then I talked with them again last week wondering if there would be a fix, and they claimed no one else had complained about the situation. I told him to google it and he pretended it was all new to him.

Have you Started or Restarted many time since? Does it always work if you unplug the AC?

On my part it only ever started to be an issue just recently. I run an USB-C 32" 4k Monitor from Phillips directly on the USB-C port and never had any problems until some days ago. Still trying to figure out what I changed since. It's super buggy now. I cant send the MBP 16 M1max to sleep anymore. I always have to do a full restart and fiddle around with the cables. Turn the screen on and off unplug it etc. I did come to life again. But it's far from ok. I could even wake the MBP by turning on the screen from sleep. It was fine. And I didn't update the OS. I'm lost - even the detect display /night shift option button doesn't appear anymore?!? Not that it was of much use before but there has to be a solution to this. I cant waste 15min each morning to get my screen to work - I always start working angry now. Thats not the kind of workout I had in mind when I said i would like to do some exercise in the morning...
