On my part it only ever started to be an issue just recently. I run an USB-C 32" 4k Monitor from Phillips directly on the USB-C port and never had any problems until some days ago. Still trying to figure out what I changed since. It's super buggy now. I cant send the MBP 16 M1max to sleep anymore. I always have to do a full restart and fiddle around with the cables. Turn the screen on and off unplug it etc. I did come to life again. But it's far from ok. I could even wake the MBP by turning on the screen from sleep. It was fine. And I didn't update the OS. I'm lost - even the detect display /night shift option button doesn't appear anymore?!? Not that it was of much use before but there has to be a solution to this. I cant waste 15min each morning to get my screen to work - I always start working angry now. Thats not the kind of workout I had in mind when I said i would like to do some exercise in the morning...
Good luck... It sounds like the same problem, more or less. I can't recall exactly how I got my LG to work right after the instal of 12.4... but I'm sure that the second time, last week or so, I unplugged the Monitor USB-C and/or the AC...

I've been putting off installing PhotoShop because I'm afraid my Monitor will take a crap when I reboot.

As soon as I'm brave enough to install it, I'll report back.

I guess everyone in this thread managed to get their Monitors working somehow... or they were all beamed away to another dimension without Apple Probs... sigh.

My problems went away when I stopped trying to use my HP Z32 monitor via USB-C. The Z32 like most of these USB-C capable monitors comes with USB A hub built-in also powered via the USB-C connection.

I now run three 4K screens off of WD D50 dock and a daisy-chained Akitio ThunderDock and the built-in MBP HDMI (when I need the third screen which is only about every second session) without crashes, both hooked up via DisplayPort now. At the same time I have three USB hubs attached (one for each monitor) through the docks, a half-dozen USB peripherals and dongles set up.

I don't like to say this out loud (not to jinx it) but this set up has been stable for two months without crashes and without restarts. I was in the same hell you were for about a week when my USB-C monitor started to go flakey. I've been on Monterey 12.1 the whole time so it's not an OS update. Could be some software which I added or a configuration change but trying to figure that out would be a titanic project.

The fastest path to stability is to stop using USB-C video with your M1 Pro or M1 Max MBP.

I should mention that when I had an M1 Pro in here (before the M1 Max, needed 32GB of memory and only the Max was available immediately) my USB-C video did not have issues.

Sounds good. I didn't even know you could run 4K with a USB-A cable. I assume it has to be USB-A 3.0? My problem is, the Two USB-A Ports on my Mac Studio are assigned to my Mouse and my MOTU... so I'd probably need to buy a decent Hub.

I've chatted with different Apple Techs 4 Times now... and they all claimed they'd never heard of the problem... so I told them to search the Google-Machine and they all acted Very Surprised when the saw all the Posts in the Apple Forums et al. Not sure if they really hadn't heard of the problem and thought they were going to Call my "Bluff," or if they were just "Acting."

I called my wife's buddy who works at Infinite Loop and he was surprised they hadn't fixed this immediately. He said he would assume it would take an Hour, tops, with one Tech guy to solve this problem and offer a patch.

I rebooted a couple times over the last couple of days because I was Installing new Software. They went without a hitch 2 times, but the third time I ended-up with a Black Screen after I restarted. I waited until the Monitor's Sleep Cycle finished, then unplugged the AC and USB-C from the Back of the Monitor, waited a minute or two, and then plugged them back in, and it was fine. Still a pain in the arse.

I talked to Apple about this 4 times now. Each time they claim they never heard of the problem. I told them again about that silly Google-Machine.

I have the same problem as you and it is 100% annoying. Sometime, my secondary monitor won't even show a 144hz option although I know for a fact that it's supported since i've used it before. I have to juggle around with disconnecting, reconnecting and waiting for MacOS to be friendly before it gives me the 144hz option.

Sometimes it doesn't play nice and gives me a black screen until I re-try all the cables.

It seems pretty stable if one first connect the USB-C and then the MagSafe (if needed to get enough power delivery).

On the HP Z27xs G3 4K displays we have at work a ”no video” scenario can consistently be reproduced with M1 Max MacBook Pro's if first connecting the MagSafe and then the USB-C cable. If the USB-C is connected first there are no issues.

I should mention that on the Dell display I'm using with a 13" M1 MacBook I once only got charing when connecting the USB-C cable – there was no video signal detected. What helped in this case was to power cycle the display. This has just happened for me once during the months I've used it and I connect and re-connect a few times a day.
