I have to wonder if this kind of thinking will follow through to the new Apple Watch.
How many will opt for the $15,000 to $20,000 models rather then the more standard $400 to $500 ones?

As a self-proclaimed watch guy, I see the "Edition" models as being 100% pure rip-off that some folks try to justify because "it's gold."

I doubt they have more than $1K in gold in them(I've melted enough wristwatches to say that confidently) and you're dealing with a metal that's easier/cheaper to machine than stainless steel wrapping up electronics that are effectively expendable. The fact that they charge you a $5K premium to get a gold buckle on the strap(~$30 worth of gold on a good day) is a junk.

All that aside, to me the SS models are a "sweet spot."

I don't understand the Apple Watch at all...where's the sense of going to market with a wristwatch that requires recharging every 3 to 48 hours (depending on use)...that to me is a serious design failure.
To then dress it up in gold and price it into that range is obscene.

Personally, I find the watch ugly. There have been very, very few watches in my life that I have ever really liked (my Seiko Kinetic being one) but this one is pretty ugly. Ugly bands, ugly face.

That said I don't see the purpose behind it. Apple says it's so you can get notifications on your wrist without having to pull out your phone. But, if I am getting a notification I'll be looking at the watch for more than a glance and probably end up pulling my phone out anyway. So, I don't see the point.

Also, I prefer pulling out my phone.

I guess for some this works, but it's just not a product I have any interest in at all right now.

Being a gadget fiend, watches have always had an interest to me if they possess a significant 007 James Bond factor :)
I've had my fair share of data watches and the like over the years but again, the Apple Watch fails to tickle me as it's mostly an extender to your iPhone...and an expensive one at that.

I'll stick with my Navigator that I've had for about 15 years :)

there is Only one watch that I want and would put on my wrist and its this one ;) Nixie tubes FTW (Numerical indicator experimental number 1) or for those who want to get technical A Negative glow discharge tube filled with a Neon-argon penning gas mixture and some times a bit of mercury with 10 cathodes each formed into numbers and one grid anode ran on about 180-250V DC at a few Ma
typically (the Lamp in my Profile picture is a Low pressure sodium lamp at the Neon-argon run up phase)

Love it! Does it tell the time or give you a countdown to some villain's Neutron Bomb detonation :)

I always feel like you can't go wrong with a classic(and this was a lot cheaper than the Edition Apple Watch!)

(on my wrist now)

I have an Apple Watch and I love it, my favorite part being the Taptic engine. In my opinion, anyone who buys the gold Watch should keep it new in box and let it appreciate. New iPhone 2Gs fetch a nice amount of money and the fact that the Watch is gold, allows it to appreciate more easily. That's just my opinion on the Edition Watch

I remember those calculator watches. I wonder if those are collector items now.
