This is GREAT news, looking forward.

However, I'd like to know if the multiplayer is cross-platform?

Inability to take advantage of all the current online servers and play with friends on PCs would be a bit lame.

But I don't mean to distract from the main point that this is truly awesome, and can't wait! :D

Great news. Half life=counter strike??? or something similar? or support online play at least?

Not really, no.

It just means that we can now use Steam on both platforms. Which is certainly a plus.

I like my "Inferior" hardware just fine thank you very much.

Read the press-release AGAIN, please. It's not only about having Steam on both platforms (which IMHO is close to irrelevant); it's about announcing the AVAILABILITY of several popular games on the Mac by a leading developer (and hopefully NOT crappy Cider ports).

Once more I have to say: MS IS DEAD. AND SO ARE WINDOWS PCs.

Oh no, choices. What will I do?

A little bit of that, and a little but of the design choices on the aftermarket video card companies.

I would say their design would not be up to snuff to Job's and Ive's "Vision of Perfection"

For awhile there mac gaming was slowly diminishing, with aspyr going out of business and the other companies that port games as well. All we need now is the UT3 engine to be ported and a large number of games on steam will be mac compatible. I think publishers will now take a different look at the mac.

My big question is, how are they going to implement the shift-tab functionality of steam? As a framework?

Good news Valve...obviously they see an untapped market there and want to take advantage of it. I'm also guessing they were able to port the Source engine over easy enough that it made sense.

I'm assuming based on the reception of this...that will dictate how gaming is viewed on Mac's moving forward.

Playstation 3 fans let out a cry of anger. ha

Pretty much mirrored my thoughts there. Valve noticed the Mac gaming market was ready for the taking and made their move. And I have to say I see good things for them and also 3rd parties using their framework.

But I’ll have to disagree on that PS3 part :D. The news is not that big.

Yes mutliplayer is cross-platform, its the same engine and code so it should work fine.

Counter Strike Source
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 2

Are all heavily multiplayer games.

Awesome

this is awesome, finally no more bootcamp just to play games.

As i seem most of apple hardware is standard, they should optimize their games likewise, so we can squeeze max power from our mac's :)

This is sweet!

Oh I know that. It's excellent news for long time Mac fans. But for us the PC gamers out there, it's just another day.

Don't get me wrong, this is big news. The more users that enjoy the Steam the better. But many PC Gamers out there like their hardware. As do I.

When we have a dozen Mac video card vendors fighting it out on NewEgg, I'll consider it coming together.

Consider for a moment the hardware statistics as surveyed by Steam in February;

GPU with highest usage - ATI 4800 series. Next highest? nVidia 8800. Amount of ram in typical system? 2Gb. Average HD space? 500Gb.

And 40% are using Windows XP 32-bit.

I'm all for bleeding-edge hardware, since acquiring it is in and of itself a fun passtime. But I think people, particularly on this website, are placing too much emphasis on the hardware in their Macs, and how 'outdated' it is. My year-old Dell laptop has better hardware than the majority of the people that were surveyed in Steam last month.

This is exciting to me even though I'm not into games.

I'll be interested to see how the games perform on entry level Macs compared to equivalent Win machines. I suspect that the Mac versions won't perform as well as the Windows ones.

Maybe this will motivate Apple to get it together with regard to 3D on the Mac.

I completed Portal again twice this week on my iMac so I won't be in a rush to play it. :p

I hate mouse acceleration for games.
My main question: Do games on the Mac turn it off or will I have to use terminal commands?

This is GREAT news. I hope they bring Portal 1 to the Mac first. I've never gotten the chance to play through it. Would love to!

I didn't even know about Portal until the leaked news of Steam coming to Mac last week. Now that it will be on Mac I would love to play it, too.
