Im wondering if the new MBP's will be released in conjunction (or very close) with the Valve Steam client release.

Im sure Apple and Valve have communicated, but to what extent....

Yes mutliplayer is cross-platform, its the same engine and code so it should work fine.

Counter Strike Source
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 2

Are all heavily multiplayer games.

Thanks, I also just found the article over at AI stated that they would be compatible (source).

AWESOME! :cool:

This sounds soooo awesome! Even though I own a PS3 and play with that, there are some games I'd like to play with iMac as well (not available for PS3) because some of my friends are PC gamers and they always ask me to install Windows and buy a PC version of e.g. MW2 so I could play with 'em.

Steam Play also sounds extremely nice and good!

Looking forward on this :cool:

Joygasssssm!

L4D & CSS need to be added to the list though.... :D

EDIT: scratch that i didn't read the press release carefully enough, CSS is on the list... Screw L4D then, i'll buy L4D2....

I wonder - will Source-based games like Garry's Mod work out of the box, or will we have to wait for those developers to get their acts together and port them?

Either way, I'm really really excited. Also, did anyone notice there's no actual article link? I can't find it.

Also, after Googling for the press release, it sounds like there's another service, Steam Cloud, where you can preserve your save-state:

For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.

I'm excited! Can't wait to play HL2 on my Mac!

Oh, also, this is pretty neat:

Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth.

Play with PC users :)

Also, to those Mac users who haven't really played many or any Steam/Source games, I think many people here would agree that the Half Life 2 series is one of the best in gaming. Start with HL2, then play episodes one and two. It really is an accomplishment in game design, style, and feel.

This is GREAT news. I hope they bring Portal 1 to the Mac first. I've never gotten the chance to play through it. Would love to!

The impression I got is that Portal 1 will be out in April, with Portal 2 later in the year alongside the Windows/360 releases.

More info from Valve

Here's some more detailed info from http://store.steampowered.com/news/:

"We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation," said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. "The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows."

I think Apple pushing out openGL 3.0 on there recent 10.6.3 betas has a lot to do with this.

When we have a dozen Mac video card vendors fighting it out on NewEgg, I'll consider it coming together.

im not going to upgrade to a mac pro (the only videocard upgradable mac) for better gaming. i'd rather keep my 27" imac and build a gaming PC.

i can save even more money by using my imac as the monitor for my PC.

Steam Play

I read the press release on Valve's website and the paragraph on Steam Play makes me slightly nervous:

"Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."

The last sentence makes it sound like Steam Play is a feature that must be selected by the developers. Am I being paranoid, or will developers have the ability to choose whether or not to charge for multiple platform support with an individual user?

In an ideal world, I could log in to my Steam account on my iMac 27" and all of my Source games would be available to me immediately. Am I dreaming? Their wording is slightly ambiguous.

So does this mean now that Source has been ported or re-written in OpenGL that we could see more Mac games from other developers?

That sounds like a good deal. I went with the MacBook + Windows 7 desktop.

Though I don't have any incentive to buy a new MacBook.

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires.
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more methinks would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Replace Saint Crispin's day with "alive for the day Steam/Valve came to Mac." I remember just last month we were all dreaming of this on the MR steam group. I can NOT BELIEVE its here and i'm so happy I could dance. Being a hardcore gamer on a Mac is no longer a burden!!

NOW we're talking...no crappy ports, no stupid presumption that PC games play better than Mac games...Valve, if speech comes to reality, will FINALLY leverage Mac gaming superiority through OpenGL and other technologies. EXCELLENT NEWS INDEED.

Before you mock the mac hardware too much take a look at this page:

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Thank you for the link...this just confirms what most sensible people ALREADY knew...MOST PC users (including gamers) have machines that are WAY inferior to modern Macs.

That's what always amazes me when Winblows trolls come to populate this forum and brag about PC gaming advantages - UNLESS you're in the 0.5% of customers who really care about upgrading GFX cards, Macs are MUCH better on average than most PCs out there. A quick visit to places like MediaMarkt or BestBuy will show you that.

SLI GFX users: less than 2 per cent...average RAM, 2Gb. 'Nuff said.

Half Life 2 runs superbly well on my iMac when running via Boot Camp, and it even ran really well via Boot Camp on my old 17" white iMac ... so to get a proper native version will be brilliant.
